Description: Intimacy with God must take priority over busyness and activity.
INTRODUCTION
In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to become consumed with activities, responsibilities, and even ministry work, while neglecting the most important aspect of the Christian life; intimacy with God. Many believers equate busyness with productivity, yet spiritual effectiveness is not measured by how much we do, but by how deeply we connect with God.
In Luke 10:38-42, the story of Mary and Martha presents a powerful contrast between activity and devotion. Martha was busy serving and distracted with many tasks, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words. Though Martha’s service was not wrong, Jesus commended Mary for choosing what was truly necessary.
This passage calls us to examine our priorities. It reminds us that while service is important, it must never replace time spent in God’s presence. Intimacy with God is the foundation for effective living and ministry.
1. BUSYNESS CAN DISTRACT FROM GOD’S PRESENCE
Excessive activity, even in good things, can draw us away from intimacy with God.
a) Distracted with Much Serving (Luke 10:40)
Martha became overwhelmed with many responsibilities, illustrating how busyness can shift focus away from what truly matters.
b) Losing Spiritual Focus (Revelation 2:4)
It is possible to be active in service while losing the depth of one’s relationship with God.
c) Anxiety and Pressure (Luke 10:41)
Jesus pointed out that Martha was worried and troubled about many things, showing that misplaced priorities lead to inner unrest.
d) The Danger of Substituting Activity for Intimacy (Matthew 7:22-23)
External works cannot replace a genuine relationship with Christ.
Biblical Example: King Saul became more concerned with outward actions than obedience and relationship with God, leading to his downfall (1 Samuel 15:22-23).
2. INTIMACY WITH GOD IS THE ONE NECESSARY THING
A deep relationship with God is the foundation of a victorious Christian life.
a) Sitting at Jesus’ Feet (Luke 10:39)
Mary positioned herself to listen and learn, demonstrating the importance of quiet fellowship and attentiveness to God’s voice.
b) Desire for God’s Presence (Psalm 27:4)
A genuine longing for God leads to a life centred on His presence.
c) Abiding in Christ (John 15:4)
Fruitfulness comes from remaining connected to Jesus, not from mere activity.
d) Pursuing God Above All (Philippians 3:8)
Paul counted all things as loss compared to the excellence of knowing Christ.
Biblical Example: David prioritised God’s presence, seeking Him continually and finding strength and guidance (Psalm 63:1-5).
3. RIGHT PRIORITIES BRING PEACE AND CLARITY
When God is placed first, life becomes ordered and peaceful.
a) One Thing Is Needful (Luke 10:42)
Jesus emphasised that focusing on the most important thing brings clarity and direction to life.
b) Freedom from Anxiety (Matthew 6:33)
Seeking God first removes unnecessary worry and aligns life with divine provision.
c) Peace in His Presence (Isaiah 26:3)
A mind fixed on God experiences perfect peace.
d) Clear Direction (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Trusting God leads to guidance and purpose in every area of life.
Biblical Example: Solomon prioritised God by asking for wisdom, and his life was ordered with divine favour and understanding (1 Kings 3:9-12).
4. CHOOSING GOD’S PRESENCE HAS ETERNAL VALUE
Time spent with God produces lasting and eternal rewards.
a) The Good Part (Luke 10:42)
Jesus described Mary’s choice as the better portion, emphasising its lasting value.
b) Eternal Investment (Matthew 6:20)
Spiritual priorities yield rewards that cannot be lost.
c) Transformation Through Presence (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Fellowship with God transforms believers into His likeness.
d) Unshakeable Foundation (Psalm 16:11)
In God’s presence there is fullness of joy and lasting satisfaction.
Biblical Example: Moses valued God’s presence above all else, declaring that without it, he would not move forward (Exodus 33:14-15).
CONCLUSION
The story of Mary and Martha reminds us that while activity has its place, it must never take precedence over intimacy with God. The presence of God is the source of strength, wisdom, and true fulfilment. Without it, even the best efforts become empty.
Choose the better part today. Make time for God a priority, not an afterthought. As you cultivate intimacy with Him, your life will be filled with peace, clarity, and lasting impact.
