INTRODUCTION
In a world that celebrates instant success and visible greatness, it is easy to despise small beginnings. Many people overlook the value of starting small, forgetting that every great achievement begins with a humble beginning. God, however, often works through processes that start quietly and grow progressively.
In Luke 13:18-21, Jesus used the parables of the mustard seed and the leaven to illustrate the nature of God’s Kingdom. Though the mustard seed is tiny and the leaven appears insignificant, both produce remarkable results over time. These illustrations reveal that God’s work may begin in small, hidden ways but will eventually produce great and visible impact.
This message encourages believers not to underestimate what God is doing in their lives, no matter how small it may seem. What begins as a seed can grow into something great when nurtured by faith, patience, and obedience.
1. GOD USES SMALL BEGINNINGS TO PRODUCE GREAT RESULTS
What appears insignificant can become extraordinary in God’s hands.
a) The Mustard Seed Principle (Luke 13:19)
Jesus described the Kingdom as a tiny seed that grows into a large tree, illustrating how God transforms small beginnings into great outcomes through His power.
b) God’s Pattern of Growth (1 Corinthians 1:27)
God often chooses what seems weak and insignificant to demonstrate His strength and glory.
c) Do Not Despise Small Starts (Zechariah 4:10)
God rejoices in the beginning stages of His work, even when it appears small and unimpressive.
d) Growth Takes Time (Ecclesiastes 11:6)
Sowing consistently, even without immediate results, eventually leads to a harvest.
Biblical Example: David began as a shepherd boy, yet through God’s process, he became a great king over Israel (1 Samuel 16:11-13; 2 Samuel 5:4).
2. SMALL ACTS CAN HAVE GREAT IMPACT
Little actions done in faith can produce significant results over time.
a) The Power of Leaven (Luke 13:20-21)
A small amount of leaven influences the entire dough, demonstrating how small actions can bring widespread change.
b) Faithfulness in Little (Luke 16:10)
Being faithful in small things qualifies one for greater responsibilities.
c) Consistency Matters (Galatians 6:9)
Continuous effort in doing good will eventually yield results if we do not give up.
d) Influence Beyond Measure (Matthew 5:13-16)
Even small acts of righteousness can shine brightly and impact many lives.
Biblical Example: The little boy who gave his lunch to Jesus saw it multiplied to feed thousands, showing the power of small offerings in God’s hands (John 6:9-13).
3. GOD’S KINGDOM GROWS PROGRESSIVELY
Spiritual growth and impact happen in stages, not instantly.
a) Gradual Development (Mark 4:26-28)
Growth occurs step by step; first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn.
b) Divine Process (Philippians 1:6)
God who begins a good work is faithful to complete it over time.
c) Patience in Growth (James 5:7)
Just as a farmer waits for the harvest, believers must patiently trust God’s process.
d) Trusting the Process (Isaiah 60:22)
God makes things happen at the right time, even if the beginning seems slow.
Biblical Example: Joseph’s journey from prison to palace was a process that unfolded over time, leading to great influence and fulfilment of God’s purpose (Genesis 41:39-44).
4. GREATNESS COMES THROUGH NURTURING AND STEWARDSHIP
Small beginnings must be nurtured to reach their full potential.
a) Planting and Cultivating (Luke 13:19)
The seed was planted intentionally, showing the importance of taking action and nurturing what God has given.
b) Stewardship of Opportunities (1 Peter 4:10)
Every gift and opportunity must be managed faithfully for growth to occur.
c) Diligence in Responsibility (Proverbs 22:29)
Skill and diligence in small tasks lead to greater opportunities.
d) Remaining Connected to God (John 15:5)
Growth is sustained by abiding in Christ, who is the source of life and increase.
Biblical Example: The servants who multiplied their talents were rewarded for faithful stewardship, while the one who neglected his was rebuked (Matthew 25:14-23).
CONCLUSION
The power of small beginnings lies in God’s ability to transform the insignificant into the extraordinary. What may seem small today carries the potential for great impact tomorrow. Do not despise where you are or what you have; God is at work in it.
Remain faithful, patient, and diligent. Nurture what God has placed in your hands, and trust His process. In due time, your small beginning will grow into something great that brings glory to God.
