Description: This study reveals that true greatness in God’s kingdom is defined by humility and a life of service.
INTRODUCTION
In Mark 9:33-37, the disciples were engaged in a dispute about who among them was the greatest. This argument reflected a common human tendency: the desire for recognition, status, and superiority. However, Jesus used this moment to redefine what true greatness means in the Kingdom of God.
Rather than endorsing their ambition, Jesus taught a radical principle: greatness is not measured by position or power but by humility and service. He illustrated this by placing a child in their midst, demonstrating that childlike humility is central to Kingdom values.
This passage challenges believers to rethink their understanding of success and greatness. In God’s Kingdom, those who humble themselves and serve others are the ones truly exalted. True greatness is found in selflessness, not self-promotion.
1. GREATNESS IN GOD’S KINGDOM IS REDEFINED
God’s definition of greatness is completely different from the world’s standard.
a) The desire for greatness is natural but must be redirected (Mark 9:34)
The disciples’ argument shows that the desire to be great is common, yet without proper understanding, it can lead to pride, competition, and division rather than unity and purpose.
b) Jesus redefines greatness (Mark 9:35)
Instead of condemning the desire for greatness, Jesus redirected it by teaching that true greatness is achieved through humility and service to others.
c) Worldly greatness focuses on status (Matthew 20:25-26)
In the world, greatness is often associated with power, influence, and control, but in God’s Kingdom, it is measured by character and service.
d) Kingdom greatness focuses on service (Galatians 5:13)
Believers are called to use their lives to serve others in love, showing that greatness is expressed through selfless actions rather than personal gain.
Biblical Example:
Joseph’s journey (Genesis 41:39-41) shows that true greatness comes from serving faithfully before being elevated.
2. HUMILITY IS THE FOUNDATION OF GREATNESS
Without humility, true greatness cannot be attained.
a) Humility requires lowering oneself (James 4:10)
To be humble is to willingly submit to God and place others above oneself, trusting that God will bring exaltation in due time.
b) Pride leads to downfall (Proverbs 16:18)
When a person elevates themselves, it often results in failure, showing that pride is a barrier to true greatness.
c) Christ is the perfect example of humility (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus humbled Himself, taking the form of a servant, demonstrating that humility is not weakness but strength under control.
d) God honours the humble (1 Peter 5:6)
Those who humble themselves under God’s mighty hand will be lifted up at the right time.
Biblical Example:
Moses’ humility (Numbers 12:3) made him one of the greatest leaders in Scripture.
3. SERVING OTHERS IS THE PATH TO GREATNESS
Service is the practical expression of humility.
a) Service reflects Christ’s nature (Mark 10:45)
Jesus came not to be served but to serve, showing that true leadership is rooted in serving others sacrificially.
b) Serving requires selflessness (Philippians 2:4)
Genuine service involves looking beyond personal needs and prioritising the well-being of others.
c) Service builds unity (Ephesians 4:11-13)
When believers serve one another, it strengthens the body of Christ and promotes growth and harmony.
d) Service is rewarded by God (Hebrews 6:10)
God does not forget the labour of love demonstrated through serving others faithfully.
Biblical Example:
The early church (Acts 6:1-7) grew stronger as believers served one another diligently.
4. CHILDLIKE ATTITUDE REFLECTS KINGDOM GREATNESS
A childlike heart is essential for entering and thriving in God’s Kingdom.
a) Jesus used a child as an example (Mark 9:36)
By placing a child before them, Jesus illustrated that humility, simplicity, and dependence are key traits of Kingdom greatness.
b) Childlike humility embraces dependence (Matthew 18:3)
Just as children rely on their parents, believers must depend fully on God for guidance and provision.
c) Receiving others reflects receiving Christ (Mark 9:37)
Welcoming and valuing even the least reflects a heart that honours Christ Himself.
d) A childlike heart fosters sincerity (Psalm 131:2)
True greatness involves a pure, humble, and contented heart that trusts God completely.
Biblical Example:
Samuel’s obedience as a child (1 Samuel 3:10) shows a heart that is receptive and responsive to God.
CONCLUSION
Jesus’ teaching on greatness challenges every worldly perspective. In God’s Kingdom, greatness is not about position but about humility, service, and a childlike heart. Those who seek to exalt themselves will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be exalted.
As believers, we are called to live differently: to serve, to love, and to walk in humility. When we embrace these principles, we align ourselves with God’s definition of greatness and position ourselves for His divine approval and reward.
