AVOIDING HYPOCRISY
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Matthew 23:27-28
Key Verse: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones…” — Matthew 23:27
Supporting Texts: Luke 12:1-2, James 1:22, Titus 1:16, Psalm 51:6, 1 Samuel 16:7
Description: Hypocrisy is the inconsistency between outward appearance and inward reality; God calls believers to live with sincerity, truth, and integrity.
INTRODUCTION
Hypocrisy is one of the most dangerous spiritual conditions because it creates a false impression of righteousness while concealing a heart that is not fully aligned with God. It is possible to appear godly outwardly through words, actions, or religious activities, yet be far from God inwardly.
Jesus strongly rebuked hypocrisy during His earthly ministry because it deceives both the individual and others. It hinders genuine spiritual growth, damages credibility, and blocks true fellowship with God. God is not interested in outward performance alone but in a transformed heart that reflects sincerity and truth.
Avoiding hypocrisy requires honest self-examination, repentance, and a commitment to live authentically before God and others. It is about aligning the inner life with outward conduct so that what we profess matches how we live.
1. HYPOCRISY IS AN OUTWARD SHOW WITHOUT INNER TRANSFORMATION
It focuses on appearance rather than genuine righteousness.
a) External Appearance (Matthew 23:2728)
Hypocrites may look righteous outwardly, but their hearts are far from God, revealing a dangerous disconnect.
b) Lip Service Without Heart (Isaiah 29:13)
Honouring God with words while the heart is distant shows superficial devotion.
c) Religious Performance (2 Timothy 3:5)
Having a form of godliness without its power reflects hypocrisy.
d) God Sees the Heart (1 Samuel 16:7)
While people judge outward appearance, God examines the true condition of the heart.
Biblical Example: The Pharisees were known for outward religious acts but were rebuked by Jesus for their lack of inner righteousness (Matthew 23:1-7).
2. HYPOCRISY DECEIVES AND DAMAGES
It leads to self-deception and negatively impacts others.
a) Self-Deception (James 1:22)
Hearing the Word without doing it deceives one’s own heart.
b) Misleading Others (Matthew 23:15)
Hypocrisy can lead others astray by presenting a false standard of godliness.
c) Loss of Credibility (Titus 1:16)
Claiming to know God but denying Him by actions destroys trust and witness.
d) Hidden Things Revealed (Luke 12:2)
Nothing concealed will remain hidden; hypocrisy will eventually be exposed.
Biblical Example: Ananias and Sapphira pretended to be generous while being dishonest, and their hypocrisy was exposed (Acts 5:1-10).
3. TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS STARTS FROM WITHIN
God desires sincerity and truth in the inward parts.
a) Truth in the Heart (Psalm 51:6)
God values inward sincerity more than outward display.
b) Clean Heart (Matthew 5:8)
Purity of heart leads to genuine relationship with God.
c) Transformation from Within (Romans 12:2)
True change begins in the mind and heart, not just external behaviour.
d) Walking in the Light (1 John 1:7)
Living transparently before God brings fellowship and cleansing.
Biblical Example: David repented sincerely after his sin, demonstrating genuine transformation rather than covering up wrongdoing (Psalm 51:1-4).
4. LIVING AUTHENTICALLY BEFORE GOD AND MEN
A life free from hypocrisy is marked by consistency and sincerity.
a) Being Doers of the Word (James 1:22)
Living out God’s Word ensures alignment between belief and behaviour.
b) Integrity in Actions (Proverbs 10:9)
Walking in integrity brings security and confidence.
c) Consistency in Private and Public (Luke 16:10)
Faithfulness in secret reflects genuine character.
d) Seeking God’s Approval (Galatians 1:10)
Living to please God rather than people eliminates hypocrisy.
Biblical Example: Daniel lived consistently before God in both private and public life, showing integrity without compromise (Daniel 6:4-5).
CONCLUSION
Avoiding hypocrisy is essential for a genuine and effective Christian life. God desires sincerity, truth, and integrity from the heart, not just outward performance. Hypocrisy may deceive temporarily, but it ultimately leads to exposure and spiritual stagnation.
Choose to live authentically before God. Align your inner life with your outward actions, and pursue a relationship with God that is real and sincere. As you do, your life will reflect true righteousness and become a powerful testimony of God’s transforming grace.
