Description: This study reveals the power of divine encounters to transform lives and reveal God’s glory.

INTRODUCTION

In Mark 9:2-8, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain where they experienced a supernatural encounter. There, Jesus was transfigured before them, and His divine glory was revealed in a way they had never seen before. His appearance changed, and His garments became radiant, displaying His true nature.

This moment was not just about revelation but transformation. The disciples were given a glimpse of Christ’s divine identity, and it left a lasting impact on them. The presence of Moses and Elijah further emphasised the significance of the moment, representing the Law and the Prophets pointing to Christ.

This passage teaches that divine encounters bring transformation. When we encounter God’s glory, we cannot remain the same. Such encounters deepen our understanding, strengthen our faith, and align us with God’s purpose.

1. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS REQUIRE SEPARATION

Transformation often begins with being set apart from distractions.

a) Jesus took them up a high mountain (Mark 9:2)
The disciples were separated from the crowd and taken to a higher place, showing that divine encounters often require intentional withdrawal from distractions to focus on God.

b) Separation creates focus (Exodus 24:12)
Just as Moses went up the mountain to meet with God, stepping away from daily activities allows for deeper spiritual concentration and communion.

c) God meets those who seek Him (Jeremiah 29:13)
When believers deliberately seek God with all their hearts, they position themselves for genuine encounters with His presence.

d) Higher levels bring deeper experiences (Isaiah 55:9)
As we rise spiritually, leaving behind worldly distractions, we gain access to deeper revelations and dimensions of God’s glory.

Biblical Example:
Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:29-35) experienced God’s glory after separating himself to seek Him.

2. THE GLORY OF CHRIST REVEALS HIS TRUE IDENTITY

Divine encounters unveil who Jesus truly is.

a) Jesus was transfigured (Mark 9:2)
His outward appearance changed, revealing the divine nature that was always within Him, showing that Christ is more than what is seen naturally.

b) His glory was undeniable (Mark 9:3)
The brightness of His garments demonstrated a supernatural glory that surpassed anything humanly possible, confirming His divinity.

c) Heaven affirms His identity (Mark 9:7)
The voice from the cloud declared Him as the beloved Son, reinforcing His authority and divine sonship.

d) Christ is the fullness of God’s revelation (Hebrews 1:3)
Jesus is the express image of God, and encountering Him is encountering the fullness of divine truth.

Biblical Example:
The baptism of Jesus (Mark 1:10-11) also revealed His divine identity through heavenly affirmation.

3. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS TRANSFORM BELIEVERS

Experiencing God’s glory brings lasting change.

a) Transformation is progressive (2 Corinthians 3:18)
As believers behold God’s glory, they are changed from one level of glory to another, reflecting His image more clearly over time.

b) Encounters strengthen faith (2 Peter 1:16-18)
Peter later testified of this experience, showing that divine encounters leave lasting impressions that strengthen conviction.

c) Transformation affects perspective (Colossians 3:2)
After encountering God, believers begin to focus on heavenly realities rather than earthly concerns.

d) Transformation produces boldness (Acts 4:13)
Those who have been with Jesus carry a confidence and authority that reflects their encounter with Him.

Biblical Example:
Isaiah’s encounter with God (Isaiah 6:1-8) transformed him and commissioned him for service.

4. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS DEMAND RESPONSE AND OBEDIENCE

Encounters with God require a response that aligns with His will.

a) Listen to Christ (Mark 9:7)
The command “hear Him” shows that revelation must lead to obedience, as true encounters require submission to Christ’s authority.

b) Do not dwell on the experience alone (Mark 9:5-6)
Peter’s desire to build tabernacles shows the temptation to remain in the moment rather than move forward in purpose.

c) Encounters prepare for assignment (Luke 9:37)
After the mountain experience, they returned to ministry, showing that encounters are meant to empower service.

d) Obedience sustains transformation (James 1:22)
Acting on what God reveals ensures that the transformation experienced is maintained and grows.

Biblical Example:
The disciples after Pentecost (Acts 2:14-18) responded to their encounter by boldly preaching and fulfilling their mission.

CONCLUSION

The Mount of Transfiguration reveals the power of divine encounters to transform lives. When we encounter God’s glory, our understanding deepens, our faith is strengthened, and our lives are changed. Such moments are not meant to be temporary experiences but catalysts for lasting transformation.

As believers, we must seek genuine encounters with God, separate ourselves from distractions, and respond in obedience. When we do, we will continually be transformed into His image and walk in the fullness of His purpose.
