INTRODUCTION
The call to watchfulness and readiness is one of the most urgent themes in the teachings of Jesus. In a world filled with distractions, uncertainties, and spiritual complacency, many believers risk losing sight of the reality that Christ will return. The danger is not ignorance, but carelessness and lack of preparation.
In Luke 12:35-40, Jesus uses the imagery of servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast. These servants are expected to remain alert, properly dressed, and ready to open the door immediately when the master arrives. This illustration highlights the importance of living in a constant state of readiness, not knowing when the Lord will come.
This message is a wake-up call to believers to remain spiritually vigilant. Readiness is not a one-time act but a continuous lifestyle of holiness, faithfulness, and expectation. Those who are prepared will not be caught off guard but will enter into the joy of their Master.
1. WATCHFULNESS REQUIRES SPIRITUAL ALERTNESS
Believers must remain spiritually awake and sensitive at all times.
a) Girded Loins and Burning Lamps (Luke 12:35)
Jesus used the imagery of readiness to describe a life that is spiritually disciplined, alert, and actively prepared for divine encounters.
b) Avoiding Spiritual Slumber (1 Thessalonians 5:6)
Believers are called to remain awake and sober, resisting complacency and spiritual laziness that dull sensitivity to God.
c) Discernment of the Times (Matthew 24:42)
Watchfulness involves being aware of spiritual realities and living with an eternal perspective.
d) Guarding Your Spiritual Life (Proverbs 4:23)
Protecting the heart ensures that spiritual alertness is maintained consistently.
Biblical Example: The wise virgins kept their lamps burning and were prepared for the bridegroom’s arrival, unlike the foolish ones who were unprepared (Matthew 25:1-13).
2. READINESS DEMANDS CONTINUAL PREPARATION
Preparation for the Lord’s coming is a daily commitment, not a last-minute effort.
a) Living in Expectation (Luke 12:36)
The servants waited actively for their master, demonstrating a lifestyle of expectation and readiness.
b) Faithfulness in Duty (Luke 12:37)
Blessed are those whom the master finds watching, faithfully carrying out their responsibilities.
c) Holiness as a Lifestyle (Titus 2:12-13)
Readiness includes living righteously while expecting Christ’s return.
d) Consistency in Walk (Philippians 1:10)
A consistent and sincere walk with God ensures preparedness at all times.
Biblical Example: Noah prepared the ark in obedience to God over time, ensuring safety when the flood came (Hebrews 11:7).
3. THE LORD’S COMING WILL BE UNEXPECTED
Christ’s return will occur at a time when many are unprepared.
a) Sudden Arrival (Luke 12:40)
Jesus emphasised that His coming will be at an unexpected hour, requiring constant readiness.
b) No Predictable Timing (Matthew 24:36)
No one knows the exact time, making vigilance essential.
c) The Danger of Complacency (Luke 12:39)
Just as a thief comes unexpectedly, so will the Lord’s return catch the unprepared off guard.
d) Urgency of Preparation (2 Corinthians 6:2)
Now is the accepted time; preparation must not be delayed.
Biblical Example: The flood in Noah’s time came suddenly, catching many unprepared, while Noah and his family were ready (Genesis 7:11-13).
4. WATCHFULNESS BRINGS REWARD AND HONOUR
Those who remain ready will be honoured by the Lord.
a) Blessed Servants (Luke 12:37)
Jesus declared that those found watching will be blessed and honoured.
b) Divine Reward (Revelation 16:15)
Those who remain watchful keep their garments and are not put to shame.
c) Intimacy with the Master (John 14:23)
Faithfulness in readiness deepens relationship with Christ.
d) Eternal Glory (2 Timothy 4:8)
A crown of righteousness awaits those who eagerly await His appearing.
Biblical Example: Paul remained faithful to the end and looked forward to the crown of righteousness prepared for him (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
CONCLUSION
Watchfulness and readiness are not optional; they are essential for every believer. The Lord’s return is certain, but the timing is unknown. Therefore, every moment must be lived in preparation, faithfulness, and spiritual alertness.
Make a deliberate decision to stay ready. Keep your spiritual life active, your faith strong, and your focus on Christ. As you do, you will not be caught unprepared but will be ready to receive the Lord with joy and confidence.
