THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Description: The believer's body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, calling us to honour God through holiness, purity, obedience, and faithful stewardship of our lives.

INTRODUCTION

The presence of God has always been central to His relationship with His people. In the Old Testament, God's presence was associated with the tabernacle and later the temple, where His glory was manifested among Israel. In the New Testament, however, God has chosen to dwell within His people through the Holy Spirit.

Paul asked the Corinthian believers a searching question: "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?" This truth should transform the way we see ourselves, conduct ourselves, and make decisions. Our bodies are not merely physical structures; they are temples in which God's Spirit dwells.

If we truly understand that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, we will become more conscious of what we allow into our lives and what we permit to come out of them. We will pursue holiness, guard our bodies, control our conduct, and seek to make our lives suitable dwelling places for God's presence.

1. UNDERSTAND THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS IN YOU

The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is one of the greatest privileges of the Christian life. God does not merely visit His people; He makes believers His dwelling place.

a) Your Body Is God's Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Paul teaches that the believer's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. This gives the body spiritual significance and calls us to treat it with honour.

b) The Spirit Is God's Gift (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The Holy Spirit is given by God to believers. His presence is not something we earn through human achievement but a gracious gift from God.

c) Christ Lives In You Through The Spirit (Romans 8:9-10)
The presence of the Holy Spirit demonstrates that we belong to Christ. His indwelling presence brings spiritual life and transformation.

d) God Desires Fellowship With You (2 Corinthians 6:16)
God says, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them." His presence is relational, calling us to daily fellowship and obedience.

Biblical Example: The disciples experienced the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and His presence empowered them to become bold witnesses for Christ (Acts 2:1-4, 14-18).

2. RECOGNISE THAT YOU BELONG TO GOD

The indwelling Spirit reminds us that our lives are no longer independent possessions. We belong to the One who redeemed us.

a) You Are Not Your Own (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Paul directly challenges self-ownership. A Christian cannot live as though personal desires have the final authority.

b) You Were Bought With A Price (1 Corinthians 6:20)
Christ paid the price for our redemption. His sacrifice establishes His rightful claim over our lives.

c) Present Yourself To God (Romans 12:1)
Believers are called to present their bodies as living sacrifices. This means surrendering every area of life to God's purposes.

d) Live For Christ (2 Corinthians 5:15)
Christ died so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died and rose again.

Biblical Example: Paul surrendered his entire life to Christ after his encounter with Him on the road to Damascus, asking, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" (Acts 9:3-6).

3. KEEP THE TEMPLE PURE

Because the Holy Spirit dwells within us, purity is not optional. We must intentionally protect our lives from whatever defiles God's dwelling place.

a) Flee Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Sexual immorality directly affects the body, which belongs to God. Paul therefore commands believers to flee from it.

b) Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
The condition of the heart influences the entire life. We must carefully guard our thoughts, desires, motives, and emotions.

c) Reject Defiling Influences (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Believers are called to cleanse themselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit and to pursue holiness.

d) Walk In Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)
God's presence calls His people to reflect His holy character in their conduct.

Biblical Example: Joseph refused to defile himself through sexual sin even when he was alone and under significant pressure (Genesis 39:7-12).

4. ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CONTROL YOUR LIFE

The Holy Spirit does not merely dwell within believers; He desires to guide, empower, and transform them.

a) Walk In The Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit enables believers to overcome the domination of sinful desires.

b) Be Led By The Spirit (Romans 8:14)
Spirit-led believers submit their decisions and direction to God's leading rather than being controlled by their own desires.

c) Be Filled With The Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)
Believers are called to continually experience the Spirit's influence. Spiritual fullness should affect our speech, relationships, worship, and conduct.

d) Do Not Grieve The Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)
Sinful attitudes and actions can grieve the Holy Spirit. We must therefore be sensitive to His correction.

Biblical Example: Stephen was described as a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit enabled him to demonstrate extraordinary wisdom and courage under persecution (Acts 6:5-10; 7:54-60).

5. USE YOUR BODY FOR GOD'S GLORY

If our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, then they should become instruments through which God is glorified.

a) Present Your Members To God (Romans 6:13)
Our eyes, hands, feet, mouths, and abilities should be surrendered as instruments of righteousness.

b) Honour God In Your Conduct (Matthew 5:16)
Our physical actions should provide visible evidence of God's work in our lives.

c) Serve Others With Your Gifts (1 Peter 4:10)
God has given every believer abilities that can be used to serve others and advance His purposes.

d) Glorify God In Everything (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every area of life: including our physical actions, should be directed towards God's glory.

Biblical Example: Dorcas used her practical abilities to serve widows and others in need, demonstrating how a surrendered life can become a blessing to others (Acts 9:36-39).

6. PROTECT THE TEMPLE FROM DEFILEMENT

A temple must be protected from contamination. Believers must therefore exercise spiritual vigilance over their lives.

a) Guard What Enters Your Heart (Matthew 6:22-23)
What we continually expose ourselves to can influence our inner lives. We must be careful about what we watch, hear, read, and entertain.

b) Choose Your Companions Wisely (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Wrong relationships can corrupt good character. Spiritual wisdom requires us to consider who influences our lives.

c) Reject Worldly Conformity (Romans 12:2)
Believers must resist being shaped by ungodly patterns and instead allow God's Word to renew their minds.

d) Pursue Continual Cleansing (1 John 1:9)
When we fail, we should confess our sins to God and receive His forgiveness and cleansing rather than allowing guilt to keep us away from Him.

Biblical Example: Nehemiah cleansed the temple after discovering that God's house had been compromised by ungodly practices, restoring it to its proper purpose (Nehemiah 13:4-9).

CONCLUSION

To know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit is to recognise the extraordinary privilege and responsibility of Christian living. God has chosen to dwell in His people, and therefore our bodies, minds, relationships, habits, and conduct must honour His presence.

Do not treat your body as though it belongs exclusively to you. You belong to God. Keep the temple pure, walk in the Spirit, flee sinful influences, and surrender your abilities to God's service. May the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life be evident in your character, conduct, choices, and commitment to Christ.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, help me to understand deeply that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and belongs completely to You, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, cleanse my heart, mind, body, and spirit from every form of impurity and defilement, in Jesus name.

3. Father, give me grace to flee every sexual temptation and every influence that seeks to dishonour Your temple, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, help me to walk continually in the Spirit and overcome every sinful desire working against my spiritual life, in Jesus name.

5. Father, deliver me from every habit, relationship, environment, and influence that can contaminate my life and grieve the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, make me sensitive to the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit in every decision and circumstance, in Jesus name.

7. Father, let every part of my body become an instrument of righteousness, worship, service, and honour to Your name, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, renew my mind and help me to reject every ungodly pattern that seeks to conform me to the values of this world, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let the presence of the Holy Spirit be clearly evident in my character, conduct, words, relationships, and service, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, keep me faithful as Your temple throughout my earthly journey and let my life continually bring glory to Your holy name, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall continually recognise your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit, and you shall receive grace to honour God's presence in every area of your life.

2. Every influence seeking to defile your body, corrupt your mind, or weaken your relationship with God shall lose its power over you.

3. You shall walk in the Spirit and shall not be controlled by the sinful desires and impulses that seek to dominate your life.

4. The Lord shall give you increasing sensitivity to the voice of the Holy Spirit, and you shall receive divine direction in every important decision.

5. Your mind shall be renewed by God's Word, and you shall have discernment to reject every worldly pattern that is contrary to God's will.

6. Your eyes, ears, mouth, hands, feet, thoughts, desires, and abilities shall become instruments of righteousness and bring honour to Jesus Christ.

7. You shall receive grace to maintain purity in your relationships, conversations, private life, public conduct, and service to God.

8. The presence of the Holy Spirit shall produce visible transformation in your character, and your life shall become a testimony of God's sanctifying power.

9. You shall not grieve or resist the Holy Spirit; instead, you shall walk in obedience and experience increasing spiritual power, wisdom, holiness, and fruitfulness.

10. You shall remain a faithful temple of the Holy Spirit, and your life shall continually glorify God until you finish your earthly assignment.
