Description: Christian marriage is more than companionship, emotional fulfilment, or raising children. It can become a platform for advancing God's kingdom, strengthening ministry, raising godly generations, serving others, and demonstrating Christ's love to the world.
INTRODUCTION
Marriage is one of God's gifts to humanity, but for the believer, marriage carries a purpose beyond personal happiness. God desires husbands and wives to honour Him through their relationship, home, character, parenting, service, and influence. A kingdom-minded marriage asks not only, “What can my spouse do for me?” but also, “How can we together fulfil God's purpose?”
In 1 Corinthians 7:35, Paul speaks about living in a way that allows believers to “attend upon the Lord without distraction.” Although the immediate context discusses singleness and marriage, the principle applies to every Christian: our earthly relationships should support, rather than undermine, our devotion to Christ.
A marriage with kingdom purpose is therefore a partnership under God's authority. Husband and wife recognise that their marriage belongs to God, their resources belong to God, their children belong to God, and their gifts are to be used for God's glory. Such a marriage can become a ministry, a testimony, and a channel through which God's purposes are extended to future generations.
1. RECOGNISE THAT MARRIAGE BELONGS TO GOD
A kingdom-purpose marriage begins by acknowledging God's ownership.
a) God Created Marriage (Genesis 2:18)
Marriage originated in God's wisdom, not merely in human culture or desire.
b) Marriage Is A Covenant (Malachi 2:14)
A Christian marriage should be treated as a sacred covenant before God.
c) Husband And Wife Belong To One Another (Genesis 2:24)
Marriage creates a unique union in which two lives are joined together.
d) Honour God In Your Marriage (Hebrews 13:4)
The marriage relationship should be held in honour and protected from impurity.
Biblical Example: Aquila and Priscilla understood their marriage as a partnership that could be used to advance the Gospel (Acts 18:2-3, 24-26).
2. MAKE GOD'S KINGDOM YOUR FIRST PRIORITY
A kingdom marriage begins when both spouses agree that Christ comes first.
a) Seek God's Kingdom First (Matthew 6:33)
The pursuit of God's kingdom should govern the priorities of the family.
b) Submit To Christ (Ephesians 5:21)
Both husband and wife must first submit themselves to the Lord.
c) Serve God Together (Joshua 24:15)
The family should deliberately establish a culture of serving God.
d) Avoid Unnecessary Distractions (1 Corinthians 7:35)
Marriage should not become an excuse for abandoning devotion to God.
Biblical Example: Joshua publicly declared his household's commitment to serving the Lord (Joshua 24:15).
3. SEE YOUR SPOUSE AS A KINGDOM PARTNER
A godly spouse is more than a companion; he or she can become a partner in fulfilling God's purposes.
a) Help One Another Fulfil God's Purpose (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
Two people working together can accomplish more and support each other during difficult seasons.
b) Honour Each Other's Gifts (1 Peter 4:10)
Spouses should encourage one another to develop and use their God-given abilities.
c) Encourage One Another Spiritually (Hebrews 10:24)
A husband and wife should stimulate one another towards love and good works.
d) Celebrate Each Other's Success (Romans 12:15)
Kingdom partnership rejects competition and rejoices when one's spouse prospers in God's assignment.
Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila worked together to help Apollos understand the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:24-26).
4. BUILD A HOME THAT ADVANCES THE KINGDOM
The home can become a centre of Christian influence.
a) Teach Your Children God's Ways (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
Parents are responsible for intentionally passing God's truth to their children.
b) Make Your Home A Place Of Prayer (Acts 10:1-2)
Prayer should become part of the spiritual culture of the household.
c) Practise Hospitality (Romans 12:13)
A Christian home can become a place where people experience God's love and fellowship.
d) Raise Kingdom-Minded Children (Psalm 78:5-7)
Parents should prepare the next generation to know and serve God.
Biblical Example: The household of Stephanas devoted itself to serving the saints, demonstrating family commitment to kingdom work (1 Corinthians 16:15).
5. LET YOUR MARRIAGE REFLECT CHRIST
A kingdom-purpose marriage should communicate the Gospel through its conduct.
a) Love Sacrificially (Ephesians 5:25)
A husband's love should reflect the sacrificial love of Christ.
b) Demonstrate Respect (Ephesians 5:33)
Mutual honour strengthens the testimony of the marriage.
c) Practise Forgiveness (Colossians 3:13)
Grace and forgiveness demonstrate the character of Christ.
d) Walk In Purity (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4)
Sexual purity protects both the marriage and its Christian testimony.
Biblical Example: The marriage relationship is used by Paul as a picture of Christ's relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:31-32).
6. USE YOUR RESOURCES FOR KINGDOM PURPOSES
A kingdom marriage understands that material blessings are opportunities for stewardship.
a) Honour God With Your Possessions (Proverbs 3:9)
Resources should be used in ways that honour the One who provides them.
b) Practise Generosity (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Families can participate together in giving to God's work and helping others.
c) Avoid Materialism (Matthew 6:19-21)
The pursuit of possessions should never replace the pursuit of God's kingdom.
d) Manage Resources Wisely (Proverbs 21:5)
Wise planning enables a family to meet responsibilities while also supporting kingdom purposes.
Biblical Example: The early believers willingly shared their resources to meet needs within the Christian community (Acts 4:34-35).
7. SERVE GOD WITHOUT DESTROYING YOUR FAMILY
Kingdom purpose requires balance.
a) Do Not Neglect Your Spouse (1 Corinthians 7:3-5)
Ministry must not become an excuse to neglect legitimate marital responsibilities.
b) Care For Your Household (1 Timothy 5:8)
Providing responsible care for one's family is itself an important Christian responsibility.
c) Communicate About Ministry Demands (Amos 3:3)
Spouses should understand one another's responsibilities and expectations.
d) Protect Family Relationships (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Time must be managed wisely so that ministry does not unnecessarily destroy family life.
Biblical Example: Aquila and Priscilla demonstrate that marriage, work, hospitality, and ministry can be integrated into a fruitful kingdom partnership (Acts 18:1-3, 18-26).
8. LEAVE A KINGDOM LEGACY
The purpose of a godly marriage extends beyond the present generation.
a) Pass Faith To The Next Generation (Psalm 78:6-7)
Parents should intentionally transmit knowledge of God to their children.
b) Model Faithfulness (Proverbs 20:7)
A godly life becomes an inheritance of character for children.
c) Invest In Future Generations (2 Timothy 2:2)
What God teaches one generation should be passed to another.
d) Finish Your Assignment Faithfully (2 Timothy 4:7)
The goal is not merely to begin well but to finish the journey faithfully.
Biblical Example: Lois and Eunice helped establish a spiritual heritage that contributed to Timothy's faith and ministry (2 Timothy 1:5).
CONCLUSION
Marriage with kingdom purpose is a marriage in which two people intentionally submit their relationship to Christ and use their lives together for God's glory. It is not centred exclusively on comfort, romance, possessions, or social status. It seeks to build a home that reflects Christ, raises godly children, serves others, supports ministry, and advances the Gospel.
Every Christian couple should ask, “What does God want to accomplish through our marriage?” When husband and wife see themselves as kingdom partners, their home becomes more than a residence, it becomes a centre of prayer, discipleship, hospitality, service, generosity, and spiritual influence. May our marriages become instruments through which God's purposes are fulfilled on earth.
