Description: Living beyond selfishness means putting God and the genuine interests of others above personal comfort, rights, ambitions, and convenience.
INTRODUCTION
Selfishness is the tendency to place personal interests, desires, comfort, and ambitions above the legitimate needs and wellbeing of others. Although the world often celebrates self-centred living, Christ calls His followers to a radically different way of life: one characterised by love, sacrifice, humility, and service.
In 1 Corinthians 10:24, Paul gives a straightforward principle for Christian conduct: "Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth." The word "wealth" in this context carries the broader idea of another person's good or wellbeing. Paul was teaching believers not to use their freedom merely for personal advantage but to consider how their decisions would affect others.
Jesus Christ is the supreme example of this principle. He did not come to earth to be served but to serve and give His life for others. Therefore, living beyond selfishness is not weakness; it is evidence of spiritual maturity and Christlike character.
1. UNDERSTAND THE DANGER OF SELFISHNESS
Selfishness can quietly influence our attitudes, relationships, decisions, and even our service to God. It must therefore be recognised and deliberately confronted.
a) Selfishness Centres Life On Self (Philippians 2:21)
Paul observed that many people seek their own interests rather than those of Jesus Christ. Self-centred living can gradually push God's purposes into the background.
b) Selfish Ambition Produces Conflict (James 3:16)
Where selfish ambition dominates, confusion and every kind of evil practice can develop. Selfishness damages unity and relationships.
c) Selfishness Hinders Love (1 John 3:17)
When we become indifferent to the needs of others, it reveals a deficiency in practical Christian love.
d) Selfishness Can Affect Ministry (3 John 9-10)
Diotrephes placed himself at the centre and rejected others. His example demonstrates how self-interest can corrupt spiritual leadership.
Biblical Example: The rich fool focused entirely on accumulating possessions for himself and failed to consider his soul or God's purposes. His self-centredness ended in tragedy (Luke 12:16-21).
2. FOLLOW CHRIST'S EXAMPLE OF SELFLESSNESS
The answer to selfishness is not simply trying harder to be generous; it is allowing the character of Christ to shape our hearts and actions.
a) Consider Christ's Humility (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus willingly humbled Himself and accepted the form of a servant. His example challenges every desire for self-exaltation.
b) Serve Rather Than Be Served (Mark 10:45)
Jesus clearly stated that He came to serve and give His life for others. Christian greatness is measured by service.
c) Love Sacrificially (John 15:13)
Christ demonstrated the highest form of love by laying down His life for others. Genuine love often requires personal sacrifice.
d) Put Others First (Philippians 2:3-4)
Believers are instructed to esteem others and consider their interests. This requires humility and intentional concern.
Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet, taking the position of a servant and teaching His followers that greatness in God's kingdom is expressed through humble service (John 13:3-15).
3. CONSIDER THE NEEDS OF OTHERS
Living beyond selfishness requires us to become attentive to the needs, struggles, and circumstances of people around us.
a) Look Beyond Yourself (Philippians 2:4)
We should not focus exclusively on our own interests. Mature believers intentionally consider how they can contribute to the wellbeing of others.
b) Bear Others' Weaknesses (Romans 15:1)
Those who are spiritually strong should not use their strength merely for personal advantage but should support those who are weaker.
c) Share With Those In Need (Ephesians 4:28)
Christian transformation should produce generosity. God blesses us so that we can become channels of blessing to others.
d) Show Practical Compassion (1 John 3:18)
Love must move beyond words into tangible action. Genuine concern expresses itself through practical assistance.
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan saw the wounded man's need, stopped, sacrificed his time and resources, and provided practical care for him (Luke 10:30-37).
4. PUT LOVE ABOVE PERSONAL RIGHTS
Christian freedom should always be governed by love. Sometimes we must willingly surrender a legitimate right because of the spiritual wellbeing of another person.
a) Do Not Use Liberty Selfishly (1 Corinthians 10:23-24)
Paul's teaching shows that Christian liberty must not be exercised merely for personal pleasure. The good of others should influence our choices.
b) Avoid Becoming A Stumbling Block (1 Corinthians 8:9)
Our actions should not unnecessarily create spiritual danger for another believer.
c) Pursue Peace And Edification (Romans 14:19)
Instead of insisting on our preferences, we should pursue what strengthens relationships and builds the body of Christ.
d) Walk In Love (Ephesians 5:2)
Love sometimes requires sacrifice. Following Christ means allowing love to govern our choices.
Biblical Example: Paul was willing to surrender certain freedoms for the sake of the Gospel and the spiritual wellbeing of others (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).
5. SERVE OTHERS WITH WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU
God gives gifts, resources, opportunities, and influence not merely for personal enjoyment but also for service.
a) Serve With Your Gifts (1 Peter 4:10)
Every believer has received something that can benefit others. We are called to be faithful stewards of God's gifts.
b) Give Generously (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Christian generosity should come from a willing heart rather than pressure or compulsion.
c) Use Your Position To Help Others (Esther 4:14)
God can place people in positions of influence so that they can become instruments of deliverance and blessing.
d) Become A Channel Of Blessing (Genesis 12:2)
God's blessings should flow through us to others. We are blessed to become blessings.
Biblical Example: Barnabas used his resources and influence to strengthen the early church and encourage other believers (Acts 4:36-37; 9:26-27; 11:22-24).
6. DEVELOP A LIFESTYLE OF SELFLESS SERVICE
Selflessness should become more than occasional acts of kindness. It should become a defining characteristic of the Christian life.
a) Serve Without Seeking Recognition (Matthew 6:1-4)
Jesus warned against performing good deeds merely to receive human praise. God values the sincerity of our motives.
b) Give Without Expecting Return (Luke 6:35)
Christ calls His followers to generosity that is not controlled by the expectation of repayment.
c) Honour Others (Romans 12:10)
We should actively demonstrate respect, appreciation, and honour towards other people.
d) Follow Through In Love (Galatians 6:9-10)
Doing good requires perseverance. We should continue serving others even when our efforts are not immediately recognised.
Biblical Example: Dorcas was known for her abundant acts of kindness and practical service to others. Her life had such an impact that believers deeply mourned her death (Acts 9:36-39).
CONCLUSION
Living beyond selfishness is a clear expression of Christlike maturity. The believer who constantly asks, "What can I gain?" has not yet fully embraced the servant heart of Christ. But the believer who asks, "How can I honour God and become a blessing to others?" is walking in the spirit of the Gospel.
Let us therefore reject self-centredness and cultivate humility, generosity, compassion, and sacrificial service. We have been blessed to bless others, gifted to serve others, and strengthened to strengthen others. May our lives reflect the One who "came not to be ministered unto, but to minister" and gave Himself for the salvation of humanity.
