INTRODUCTION

The subject of spiritual gifts is an important part of Christian discipleship and ministry. Paul introduced his teaching in 1 Corinthians 12:1 by saying, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” This shows that God desires believers to understand spiritual gifts rather than remain uninformed about them.

Spiritual gifts are not given merely to make individuals special or prominent. They are divine enablements intended to serve God's purposes. First Corinthians 12:7 states that “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” Therefore, gifts are given for the benefit of others and the building up of the body of Christ.

The gifts may differ in their operation, but they come from the same God. Some gifts reveal God's wisdom or knowledge, some demonstrate His power, some communicate His truth, while others equip, strengthen, organise, serve, and care for His people. When these gifts operate in love and biblical order, the church becomes stronger and more effective.

1. THE GIFT OF THE WORD OF WISDOM

The word of wisdom is a Spirit-given application of divine wisdom to a particular situation.

a) Wisdom Comes From God (1 Corinthians 12:8)
The Spirit can provide insight beyond ordinary human understanding.

b) Wisdom Helps In Difficult Situations (James 1:5)
God gives wisdom when His people sincerely seek Him.

c) Wisdom Guides Decisions (Acts 15:13-20)
Spirit-led wisdom can help God's people resolve difficult matters.

d) Wisdom Must Glorify Christ (Colossians 2:3)
All true spiritual wisdom ultimately points to Christ.

Biblical Example: Solomon demonstrated extraordinary wisdom when he resolved the dispute between two women claiming the same child (1 Kings 3:16-28).

2. THE GIFT OF THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

The word of knowledge involves Spirit-given knowledge concerning a particular matter.

a) A Manifestation Of The Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8)
It is a supernatural expression of God's knowledge.

b) God Knows What Is Hidden (Hebrews 4:13)
Nothing is concealed from God.

c) Knowledge Can Strengthen Ministry (John 4:16-19)
Jesus demonstrated supernatural knowledge in His encounter with the Samaritan woman.

d) It Must Be Used Responsibly (1 Corinthians 13:9)
Believers must remain humble about what they know.

Biblical Example: Jesus revealed details about the Samaritan woman's life that He could not have known naturally (John 4:17-19).

3. THE GIFT OF FAITH

This refers to a special Spirit-enabled confidence in God for a particular situation or assignment.

a) Faith Comes From God (1 Corinthians 12:9)
The Spirit can impart extraordinary confidence in God's ability.

b) Faith Faces Impossible Situations (Matthew 17:20)
God-given faith enables believers to trust God beyond natural circumstances.

c) Faith Produces Bold Action (Hebrews 11:7-8)
Genuine faith responds to God's Word.

d) Faith Glorifies God (Romans 4:20)
Strong faith gives glory to God by trusting His promises.

Biblical Example: David demonstrated extraordinary confidence in God when he confronted Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

4. THE GIFTS OF HEALINGS

God may use believers as instruments through whom healing is ministered.

a) Healing Comes From God (1 Corinthians 12:9)
The power to heal ultimately belongs to God.

b) Jesus Healed The Sick (Matthew 4:23-24)
Healing was an important part of Christ's ministry.

c) The Early Church Ministered Healing (Acts 3:6-8)
God continued to demonstrate His power through the apostles.

d) Give God The Glory (Acts 3:12-13)
Healing ministry must never become a platform for human pride.

Biblical Example: Peter, in the name of Jesus Christ, ministered healing to the lame man at the Beautiful Gate (Acts 3:1-8).

5. THE GIFT OF WORKING OF MIRACLES

This gift involves supernatural acts of God's power beyond ordinary human ability.

a) God Works Miracles (1 Corinthians 12:10)
The Spirit enables extraordinary demonstrations of divine power.

b) Miracles Confirm God's Work (Mark 16:20)
God can use signs to accompany Gospel ministry.

c) Miracles Strengthen Faith (John 11:41-45)
God's supernatural works can point people towards Christ.

d) Miracles Must Glorify God (Acts 14:14-15)
God's servants must never take divine glory for themselves.

Biblical Example: Paul demonstrated God's power when Elymas the sorcerer was judged temporarily blind (Acts 13:8-12).

6. THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

Prophecy communicates a Spirit-inspired message that strengthens God's people.

a) Prophecy Edifies (1 Corinthians 14:3)
Biblical prophecy strengthens believers.

b) Prophecy Exhorts (1 Corinthians 14:3)
It can encourage people towards faithful obedience.

c) Prophecy Comforts (1 Corinthians 14:3)
God may use prophetic ministry to bring encouragement.

d) Prophecy Must Be Tested (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21)
Believers should examine prophetic messages according to God's Word.

Biblical Example: Agabus communicated prophetic messages concerning future events (Acts 11:27-28; 21:10-11).

7. THE GIFT OF DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

This gift enables a believer to distinguish spiritual influences and manifestations.

a) Discernment Is A Spiritual Gift (1 Corinthians 12:10)
The Holy Spirit enables believers to discern spiritual matters.

b) Test The Spirits (1 John 4:1)
Not every spiritual manifestation comes from God.

c) Recognise False Ministry (Matthew 7:15-20)
Spiritual discernment helps believers identify deception.

d) Discernment Requires God's Word (Hebrews 5:14)
Spiritual maturity strengthens the ability to distinguish good from evil.

Biblical Example: Paul discerned the spirit operating through the slave girl at Philippi and confronted it in the name of Jesus (Acts 16:16-18).

8. THE GIFT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES

Tongues involve Spirit-enabled speech in languages unknown to the speaker.

Paul identifies different kinds of tongues as a gift of the Spirit.

b) Tongues May Function In Personal Prayer (1 Corinthians 14:2)
Paul describes speaking to God through the Spirit.

Public use should follow biblical order.

9. THE GIFT OF INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

Interpretation makes a public message in tongues understandable to the congregation.

a) Interpretation Is A Spiritual Gift (1 Corinthians 12:10)
The Spirit provides the ability to communicate the meaning of the message.

b) It Makes Corporate Ministry Understandable (1 Corinthians 14:5)
Interpretation enables the church to understand what has been communicated.

c) It Contributes To Edification (1 Corinthians 14:12)
The goal is the strengthening of believers.

d) It Maintains Order (1 Corinthians 14:27-28)
Public spiritual gifts should function according to biblical order.

10. GIFTS OF SERVICE, TEACHING, EXHORTATION, GIVING, LEADERSHIP, AND MERCY

The New Testament presents additional gifts that strengthen the practical and pastoral life of the church.

a) Service (Romans 12:7)
Some believers are specially enabled to serve practical needs.

b) Teaching (Romans 12:7)
Teachers help believers understand and apply God's Word.

c) Exhortation (Romans 12:8)
Those with this gift strengthen and encourage others.

d) Giving, Leadership, And Mercy (Romans 12:8)
God uses generous, compassionate, and capable leaders to strengthen His people.

Biblical Example: Barnabas demonstrated encouragement, while Dorcas demonstrated practical service and compassion (Acts 11:22-24; 9:36).

11. MINISTRY GIFTS THAT EQUIP THE CHURCH

Ephesians 4 identifies ministry roles given to equip God's people.

a) Apostles (Ephesians 4:11)
They were commissioned for foundational and missionary ministry.

b) Prophets (Ephesians 4:11)
They ministered God's message to His people.

c) Evangelists (Ephesians 4:11)
They proclaim the Gospel and help reach the lost.

d) Pastors And Teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12)
They shepherd, teach, equip, and mature believers.

Biblical Example: Philip functioned effectively as an evangelist and preached Christ in different places (Acts 8:5-8, 26-40).

12. ALL GIFTS HAVE ONE DIVINE PURPOSE

Although the gifts differ, their purpose is united.

a) To Profit Others (1 Corinthians 12:7)
The gifts should benefit the body.

b) To Equip The Saints (Ephesians 4:12)
They prepare believers for ministry.

c) To Build The Body (Ephesians 4:12-16)
They contribute to spiritual growth and maturity.

d) To Glorify God (1 Peter 4:10-11)
Every gift should ultimately point people to God.

CONCLUSION

The variety of spiritual gifts reveals the wisdom of God. He has not made every believer identical because He intends the members of His body to complement one another. The word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, interpretation, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, and mercy all have valuable functions within God's kingdom.

However, possessing a gift is not enough. We must use our gifts in love, humility, holiness, wisdom, and biblical order. The purpose is never to impress people or elevate ourselves but to strengthen the church, equip believers, reach the lost, and glorify Christ. Discover your gift, develop your gift, deploy your gift, and dedicate your gift to the glory of God.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for the spiritual gifts You have graciously given to Your church, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to understand and discover the spiritual gifts You have placed in my life, in Jesus name.

3. Father, awaken every dormant spiritual gift within me and make me fruitful in ministry, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me wisdom to use every spiritual gift according to Your Word and Your purpose, in Jesus name.

5. Father, let the gifts of the Holy Spirit operate powerfully and responsibly in Your church, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, deliver me from pride, competition, selfish ambition, and every misuse of spiritual gifts, in Jesus name.

7. Father, help me to exercise every gift in love, humility, holiness, and spiritual maturity, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, raise believers who will faithfully use their gifts to strengthen and equip Your church, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let the operation of spiritual gifts bring salvation to the lost, encouragement to believers, and growth to Your church, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, let every spiritual gift operating in Your body ultimately bring glory and honour to Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall discover the spiritual gifts that God has deposited in your life.

2. Every dormant gift within you shall be awakened and activated for kingdom service.

3. You shall receive wisdom to use your gifts according to God's Word and purpose.

4. You shall not misuse your spiritual gifts for personal glory or selfish ambition.

5. The gifts of the Holy Spirit shall operate effectively through your life for the blessing of others.

6. You shall minister with love, humility, holiness, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.

7. Your spiritual gifts shall strengthen the weak, encourage the discouraged, and equip the saints.

8. Your ministry shall contribute to the unity, maturity, and growth of the body of Christ.

9. Through the gifts operating in your life, the Gospel shall advance and many lives shall be transformed.

10. Your gifts shall fulfil their divine purpose, and through your life Jesus Christ shall receive all the glory, in Jesus name.
