DEATH HAS LOST ITS STING

Description: The victory of Christ has stripped death of its ultimate power over the believer. Although physical death remains a present reality, its sting and final victory have been defeated through Christ's death and resurrection. The believer can therefore face mortality with hope, confidence, and assurance of eternal life.

INTRODUCTION

Death has always been one of humanity's greatest fears. It separates loved ones, brings sorrow, and reminds us of the limitations of our earthly existence. Yet, for the believer in Christ, death does not have the final word. Paul asks triumphantly, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” This is not a denial of death's reality but a declaration that Christ has conquered its ultimate power.

The sting of death is identified by Paul as sin, while the strength of sin is the law. Humanity's greatest problem is therefore not merely physical death but the sin that separates people from God. Through His sacrificial death, Jesus dealt with sin, and through His resurrection, He conquered death. The resurrection therefore changes the believer's relationship with death.

Because Christ has won the victory, Christians can face death with hope rather than despair. We can grieve, but not as those who have no hope. We can endure suffering without losing heart. We can serve God faithfully, knowing that death cannot cancel God's promises. Through Christ, death has lost its sting and the grave has lost its ultimate victory.

1. DEATH IS NO LONGER THE FINAL VICTOR

Christ has changed the believer's destiny.

Death is described as the last enemy to be destroyed.

b) Christ Entered Death (Hebrews 2:14)
Jesus willingly experienced death on behalf of humanity.

c) Christ Defeated Death (2 Timothy 1:10)
He brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.

d) Death Will Ultimately Be Destroyed (1 Corinthians 15:26)
Its final defeat is certain.

2. THE STING OF DEATH IS SIN

Paul identifies the root of death's sting.

a) Sin Entered The World (Romans 5:12)
Death entered through human sin.

b) Sin Brings Death (Romans 6:23)
Sin carries the consequence of death.

c) Sin Separates From God (Isaiah 59:2)
Sin disrupts fellowship with God.

d) Christ Bore Our Sin (1 Peter 2:24)
Jesus took our sins upon Himself on the cross.

3. CHRIST DEALT WITH THE POWER OF SIN

The cross is central to our victory.

a) Christ Died For Our Sins (1 Corinthians 15:3)
His death was the sacrifice for our redemption.

b) His Blood Provides Redemption (Ephesians 1:7)
Through Christ we receive forgiveness.

c) Sin's Dominion Is Broken (Romans 6:14)
Believers no longer have to live under sin's control.

d) We Have Peace With God (Romans 5:1)
Justification through faith restores our relationship with God.

4. CHRIST DEFEATED THE GRAVE

The resurrection demonstrates His complete victory.

a) Jesus Rose From The Dead (1 Corinthians 15:4)
The grave could not hold Him.

b) He Lives Forever (Revelation 1:18)
Christ will never die again.

c) He Holds The Keys Of Death And Hades (Revelation 1:18)
Jesus possesses ultimate authority over death.

d) Believers Have Resurrection Hope (1 Corinthians 15:20-22)
Christ's resurrection guarantees the resurrection of His people.

5. THE BELIEVER DOES NOT NEED TO FEAR DEATH

Christ provides freedom from the fear of death.

a) Christ Destroys The Fear Of Death (Hebrews 2:14-15)
Jesus delivers those who have been enslaved by fear.

b) Nothing Can Separate Us From Christ (Romans 8:38-39)
Neither life nor death can separate us from God's love.

c) To Die Is Gain (Philippians 1:21)
For the believer, death leads into the presence of Christ.

d) We Have Hope Beyond The Grave (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)
Christians grieve with resurrection hope.

6. DEATH HAS LOST ITS STING BECAUSE CHRIST GIVES ETERNAL LIFE

The believer's destiny extends beyond physical death.

a) Eternal Life Is God's Gift (Romans 6:23)
Eternal life comes through Jesus Christ.

b) Jesus Gives Everlasting Life (John 10:28)
Christ promises eternal security to His sheep.

c) Believers Will Live Again (John 11:25)
Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

d) Eternal Life Is In Christ (1 John 5:11-12)
Life is found in God's Son.

7. RESURRECTION HOPE CHANGES HOW WE GRIEVE

Christian grief is accompanied by hope.

a) We Do Not Grieve Without Hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13)
The resurrection gives believers confidence beyond the grave.

b) Christ Will Raise His People (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
The dead in Christ will rise.

c) We Will Be With The Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
The ultimate hope is eternal fellowship with Christ.

d) God Will Remove Sorrow (Revelation 21:4)
In eternity, death and sorrow will be no more.

8. VICTORY OVER DEATH SHOULD PRODUCE GRATITUDE

The appropriate response to God's victory is thanksgiving.

a) Give Thanks To God (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Victory comes from God through Christ.

b) Praise God For Salvation (Psalm 103:2-4)
Remember His redeeming benefits.

c) Celebrate Christ's Victory (Revelation 5:9-10)
Christ alone is worthy of praise for redemption.

d) Live A Thankful Life (Colossians 3:17)
Our words and actions should honour God.

9. VICTORY OVER DEATH CALLS US TO HOLY LIVING

Our eternal hope should transform our present conduct.

a) Die To Sin (Romans 6:11)
Believers should consider themselves dead to sin.

b) Live Unto God (Romans 6:11)
Our lives should be devoted to God.

c) Pursue Holiness (Hebrews 12:14)
The Christian life must reflect God's holiness.

d) Keep Yourself Pure (1 John 3:3)
Hope in Christ should produce purity.

10. VICTORY OVER DEATH MOTIVATES FAITHFUL SERVICE

Because death cannot cancel our eternal reward, we must serve faithfully.

a) Be Steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Remain firmly established in Christ.

b) Be Unmoveable (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Do not allow difficulties to shake your faith.

c) Abound In God's Work (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Serve God with diligence.

d) Know Your Labour Is Not In Vain (1 Corinthians 15:58)
God will reward faithful service.

CONCLUSION

Death remains a physical reality in this present age, but through Jesus Christ it has lost its ultimate sting and victory. Christ entered death, defeated the grave, and rose again. He has dealt with the sin that gives death its sting and has given eternal life to those who trust in Him. Therefore, death cannot finally destroy the believer's relationship with God.

The Christian can therefore face the future with confidence. We can grieve with hope, endure trials with courage, live in holiness, and serve God faithfully. The day is coming when death itself will be completely destroyed and God's people will experience eternal life without sorrow, pain, or separation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, the victory is ours.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for giving me victory over death through our Lord Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver me from every fear and anxiety concerning death and eternity, in Jesus name.

3. Father, let the power of Christ's resurrection continually operate in my life, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me grace to overcome the power and dominion of sin in my daily life, in Jesus name.

5. Father, help me to live in the confidence of eternal life through Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, comfort everyone mourning the loss of loved ones with the hope of resurrection, in Jesus name.

7. Father, help me to live a holy and righteous life while I await the coming of Christ, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, remove every spirit of hopelessness, despair, and spiritual discouragement from my heart, in Jesus name.

9. Father, make me steadfast, unmoveable, and always abounding in Your work, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, keep me faithful until the end and grant me the joy of experiencing the fullness of Your victory over death, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall walk in the victory Christ has secured over death.

2. Every fear of death and the grave shall lose its power over you.

3. The resurrection power of Jesus Christ shall continually operate in your life.

4. Sin shall not have dominion over you, because you belong to Christ.

5. You shall walk confidently in the assurance of eternal life.

6. The Lord shall comfort every grieving heart in your family with the hope of resurrection.

7. You shall live a holy, righteous, and Christ-centred life.

8. Every spirit of hopelessness and despair shall be replaced with the joy of salvation and eternal hope.

9. You shall remain steadfast, unmoveable, and fruitful in the work of the Lord.

10. Because Christ has conquered death, you shall overcome, finish your race faithfully, and inherit eternal life with Him, where death, sorrow, and pain shall be no more, in Jesus name.
