GOD'S PURPOSE FOR MARRIAGE

INTRODUCTION

Marriage was established by God from the beginning of creation. It was not man's invention or merely a social arrangement. God saw that it was not good for man to be alone and provided a suitable companion for him. From the beginning, marriage was designed to provide companionship, partnership, intimacy, fruitfulness, and a covenant relationship between a man and a woman.

In 1 Corinthians 7:1-16, Paul addressed several practical matters concerning marriage. He spoke about sexual purity, mutual responsibilities between husband and wife, the importance of honouring the marriage relationship, the challenges that can arise when spouses have different spiritual convictions, and the call to peace within marriage.

God's purpose for marriage goes beyond physical attraction or personal satisfaction. Marriage is a covenant in which husband and wife learn to love, serve, forgive, sacrifice, grow together, and honour God. When marriage is lived according to God's design, it becomes a powerful testimony of God's faithfulness and love.

1. MARRIAGE PROVIDES GODLY COMPANIONSHIP

God designed marriage so that husband and wife can walk through life together as partners.

a) God Does Not Desire Loneliness (Genesis 2:18)
God declared that it was not good for man to be alone and provided a suitable companion.

b) Husband And Wife Become One (Genesis 2:24)
Marriage creates a unique covenant union in which two people establish a shared life together.

c) Companionship Requires Partnership (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
A healthy marriage involves mutual support, encouragement, and assistance through life's challenges.

d) Marriage Requires Faithfulness (Malachi 2:14)
Marriage is described as a covenant. Therefore, husband and wife should treat their commitment with seriousness and loyalty.

Biblical Example: Aquila and Priscilla served together, worked together, and participated actively in Christian ministry as a married couple (Acts 18:2-3, 24-26).

2. MARRIAGE PROVIDES A GODLY CONTEXT FOR INTIMACY

God created sexual intimacy and placed it within the covenant of marriage.

a) Honour Sexual Purity (1 Corinthians 7:2)
Marriage provides a God-ordained context for sexual intimacy and protects believers from sexual immorality.

b) Husband And Wife Have Mutual Responsibilities (1 Corinthians 7:3)
Paul teaches that both husband and wife should fulfil their responsibilities towards one another with love and consideration.

c) Do Not Use Intimacy As A Weapon (1 Corinthians 7:4-5)
Spouses should not deliberately deprive one another as a means of punishment or manipulation, except by mutual agreement for a specific spiritual purpose.

d) Honour The Marriage Bed (Hebrews 13:4)
Marriage should be honoured, and sexual intimacy within marriage should be treated with dignity and purity.

Biblical Example: Proverbs 5:18-19 celebrates faithful marital intimacy and encourages a husband to rejoice in the wife of his youth.

3. MARRIAGE REQUIRES MUTUAL LOVE AND SACRIFICE

A healthy marriage cannot survive on selfishness. Both spouses must learn to give, serve, and sacrifice.

a) Love One Another Sacrificially (Ephesians 5:25)
Husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loved the Church, demonstrating sacrificial love.

b) Respect One Another (Ephesians 5:33)
Marriage requires both love and respect. Each spouse should recognise the dignity God has given the other.

c) Put The Other Person's Needs Into Consideration (Philippians 2:3-4)
Selflessness strengthens marriage because it shifts the focus from “What can I get?” to “How can I bless my spouse?”

d) Forgive One Another (Colossians 3:13)
Every marriage requires forgiveness because two imperfect people are learning to live together.

Biblical Example: Hosea's story demonstrates the extraordinary nature of covenant love and forgiveness, although it should not be used to justify tolerating abuse or persistent destructive behaviour.

4. MARRIAGE IS A COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS

God takes marital faithfulness seriously.

a) Marriage Is A Covenant (Malachi 2:14)
Marriage is more than a legal contract. It is a covenant witnessed by God.

b) Reject Adultery (Exodus 20:14)
God's command against adultery protects the sanctity and faithfulness of marriage.

c) Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
Marital faithfulness begins by guarding the heart from emotional and moral compromise.

d) Honour Your Vows (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5)
God takes promises seriously. Marriage vows should therefore be treated with integrity.

Biblical Example: Joseph's response to Potiphar's wife demonstrates the importance of refusing sexual temptation and remaining faithful to one's moral commitments (Genesis 39:7-12).

5. MARRIAGE CAN BECOME A PLATFORM FOR SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE

A marriage can influence an entire household spiritually.

a) Be A Godly Example (Joshua 24:15)
Joshua declared his commitment that his household would serve the Lord.

b) Encourage Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 5:26)
Marriage should help both partners grow in godliness rather than pull them away from God.

c) Raise Children In God's Ways (Ephesians 6:4)
Parents have a responsibility to nurture their children in the instruction and discipline of the Lord.

d) Pray Together And For One Another (1 Peter 3:7)
Spiritual partnership includes praying, supporting, and caring for one another.

Biblical Example: Timothy benefited from the godly influence of his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois, demonstrating the powerful spiritual impact that can come through a family (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:15).

6. MARRIAGE REQUIRES PEACE AND WISDOM

Marriage is not free from disagreements. Couples must learn to resolve conflict God's way.

a) Pursue Peace (1 Corinthians 7:15)
Paul reminds believers that God has called His people to peace.

b) Control Anger (Ephesians 4:26-27)
Uncontrolled anger can give the enemy an opportunity to damage relationships.

c) Communicate With Grace (Colossians 4:6)
Spouses should learn to speak respectfully and honestly, especially when discussing difficult matters.

d) Forgive Quickly (Ephesians 4:32)
Forgiveness prevents minor offences from becoming permanent sources of bitterness.

Biblical Example: Isaac and Rebekah experienced serious family difficulties, but their story reminds us of the importance of seeking God's direction rather than allowing conflict to control the household (Genesis 26:34-35; 27:46).

7. MARRIAGE SHOULD REFLECT CHRIST AND THE CHURCH

Christian marriage has a deeper spiritual purpose: it can illustrate the relationship between Christ and His Church.

a) Christ Loves His Church (Ephesians 5:25)
The husband's sacrificial love is compared with Christ's love for the Church.

b) The Church Responds To Christ (Ephesians 5:22-24)
Paul uses marriage to illustrate the Church's relationship with Christ.

c) Marriage Should Display Sacrificial Love (Ephesians 5:28-29)
Husbands are called to care for their wives as they care for their own bodies.

d) Marriage Should Glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every aspect of marriage should ultimately be lived for God's glory.

Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila demonstrated partnership in marriage and ministry, becoming an example of a couple who served God together (Acts 18:18-26).

8. HANDLE SPIRITUAL DIFFERENCES WITH WISDOM

Paul addressed marriages in which one spouse was a believer and the other was not.

a) Do Not Abandon The Marriage Simply Because Of Spiritual Difference (1 Corinthians 7:12-13)
Where an unbelieving spouse is willing to remain, the believing spouse should not automatically seek separation.

b) Live As A Godly Witness (1 Peter 3:1-2)
A Christian spouse's conduct can provide a powerful witness through godly character.

c) Recognise Your Influence (1 Corinthians 7:14)
Paul describes the believing spouse's presence as having a sanctifying influence within the household, without suggesting that the unbelieving spouse is automatically saved.

d) Pursue Peace (1 Corinthians 7:15)
If the unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, Paul says the believer is not enslaved in such circumstances because God has called us to peace.

Biblical Example: The household of Cornelius became a place where the Gospel was received and embraced, demonstrating the potential spiritual influence of one person's faith upon a household (Acts 10:1-2, 44-48).

CONCLUSION

Marriage is God's gift and covenant institution. It provides companionship, intimacy, mutual support, family, spiritual partnership, and an opportunity to display the sacrificial love of Christ. It requires more than romance; it requires commitment, faithfulness, forgiveness, patience, humility, communication, and dependence upon God.

Every husband and wife should therefore ask, “How can our marriage honour God?” When Christ becomes the centre of the home, marriage becomes more than a relationship between two people; it becomes a testimony of God's grace. May our marriages reflect faithfulness, purity, love, peace, and the character of Christ.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let every marriage represented here fulfil Your purpose and bring glory to Your name, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, strengthen the bond of love, unity, faithfulness, and companionship between husbands and wives, in Jesus name.

3. Father, protect every marriage from adultery, sexual immorality, emotional infidelity, and every form of marital unfaithfulness, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give husbands and wives grace to love, respect, forgive, and serve one another sacrificially, in Jesus name.

5. Father, heal every wounded marriage and restore communication, trust, intimacy, and peace where they have been damaged, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, give couples wisdom to resolve disagreements without bitterness, insults, violence, or destructive behaviour, in Jesus name.

7. Father, let Christian homes become centres of prayer, godly instruction, love, and spiritual growth, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, strengthen spouses who are experiencing spiritual differences and give them wisdom to maintain a godly witness and pursue peace, in Jesus name.

9. Father, protect children and families from every influence that seeks to destroy the godly purpose of marriage, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, let every marriage under my influence reflect the love, purity, faithfulness, and sacrificial character of Christ, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Every marriage established according to God's will shall receive fresh grace, strength, unity, and divine protection.

2. The Lord shall strengthen the love between husbands and wives, and every scheme designed to create unnecessary separation shall fail.

3. Every attack against marital faithfulness shall be defeated, and God shall preserve couples from adultery and moral compromise.

4. Where communication has broken down, the Lord shall release wisdom, humility, patience, and grace to communicate again.

5. Where trust has been damaged, God shall provide a pathway for healing, repentance, restoration, and the rebuilding of trust where appropriate.

6. The peace of God shall rule in Christian homes, and every atmosphere of constant strife and hostility shall give way to understanding.

7. Your home shall become a place of prayer, love, godly instruction, hospitality, and spiritual growth.

8. Children raised under your influence shall encounter godly examples, sound instruction, and the truth of God's Word.

9. Spouses facing difficult seasons shall receive divine wisdom and strength to make decisions that honour God and protect what is good and righteous.

10. Your marriage shall increasingly reflect the sacrificial love of Christ, and through your home, many shall see the beauty of God's design for marriage.
