OUR HEAVENLY BODY

Description: The resurrection will bring a glorious transformation to the bodies of believers. First Corinthians 15:35-49 explains that the resurrection body will be different from our present earthly body: imperishable, glorious, powerful, and suited for eternal life. The believer's future is therefore not disembodied existence but a transformed existence in the likeness of Christ.

INTRODUCTION

One of the questions raised concerning the resurrection is, “How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?” Paul addresses this question by explaining that God has a divine purpose for the resurrection body. The body that is buried in weakness and corruption will be raised in an entirely transformed condition. The resurrection is therefore not merely the continuation of our present physical existence but the transformation of our bodies for eternal glory.

Paul uses the illustration of a seed to explain this mystery. A seed that is planted does not look like the mature plant that emerges from it, yet there is a real continuity between the seed and the plant. In the same way, the body that is buried will be transformed into a glorious resurrection body. God Himself determines the form and glory of that resurrected body.

This truth gives believers tremendous hope. Our present bodies experience weakness, ageing, sickness, suffering, and eventually death, but these conditions are not our final destiny. Those who belong to Christ will one day bear the image of the heavenly. Therefore, we should live with eternity in view, knowing that God has prepared a glorious future for His people.

1. THE RESURRECTION BODY IS GOD'S DESIGN

God has a purpose for the believer's future body.

a) God Gives The Body Its Form (1 Corinthians 15:38)
The resurrection body is God's work, not man's invention.

b) God Gives Different Bodies (1 Corinthians 15:38-41)
God's creation demonstrates His ability to give different forms and degrees of glory.

c) The Resurrection Is A Divine Work (John 5:28-29)
The dead will hear Christ's voice and come forth.

d) God's Power Is Greater Than Death (Matthew 22:29)
The resurrection demonstrates God's unlimited power.

2. THE RESURRECTION BODY IS LIKE A SEED THAT IS TRANSFORMED

Paul uses the seed to illustrate resurrection.

a) A Seed Must Be Sown (1 Corinthians 15:36)
There is a process of death before new life emerges.

b) The Seed Does Not Look Like The Final Plant (1 Corinthians 15:37)
The resurrection body will be different from the present body.

c) God Gives The Body He Chooses (1 Corinthians 15:38)
God determines the nature of the resurrection body.

d) There Is Continuity And Transformation (1 Corinthians 15:42-44)
The resurrected person is truly the same person, yet gloriously transformed.

3. OUR PRESENT BODY IS PERISHABLE

Our earthly bodies are temporary.

a) The Body Is Sown In Corruption (1 Corinthians 15:42)
Physical bodies are subject to decay.

b) Ageing Affects The Body (Psalm 90:10)
Human strength and physical life are temporary.

c) Death Returns The Body To Dust (Genesis 3:19)
The present body is mortal.

d) Our Earthly Body Is Not Our Final State (2 Corinthians 5:1)
God has prepared an eternal dwelling for His people.

4. OUR RESURRECTION BODY WILL BE IMPERISHABLE

The resurrection will permanently overcome corruption.

a) Sown In Corruption, Raised In Incorruption (1 Corinthians 15:42)
The resurrected body will no longer decay.

b) Death Will No Longer Dominate (Romans 6:9)
Christ's resurrection demonstrates that death's dominion is broken.

c) Mortality Will Give Way To Immortality (1 Corinthians 15:53)
The believer will no longer be subject to death.

d) Eternal Life Will Be Fully Realised (1 Corinthians 15:54)
God will bring complete victory over mortality.

5. OUR RESURRECTION BODY WILL BE GLORIOUS

God will transform the believer's body for eternal glory.

a) Sown In Dishonour, Raised In Glory (1 Corinthians 15:43)
The resurrection body will possess a glory beyond our present condition.

b) Christ Will Transform Our Bodies (Philippians 3:21)
Jesus will conform our bodies to His glorious body.

c) We Shall Be Like Christ (1 John 3:2)
Our future transformation will reflect Christ's glory.

d) Eternal Glory Awaits God's People (Romans 8:18)
Our future glory will far surpass present suffering.

6. OUR RESURRECTION BODY WILL BE POWERFUL

Weakness will not characterise the resurrection body.

a) Sown In Weakness (1 Corinthians 15:43)
Our present bodies are limited and vulnerable.

b) Raised In Power (1 Corinthians 15:43)
The resurrection body will be perfectly suited to eternal existence.

c) Christ's Power Will Transform Us (Philippians 3:21)
Jesus has the power to transform our bodies.

d) Nothing Will Hinder Eternal Life (Revelation 21:4)
There will be no weakness, death, or suffering in God's eternal presence.

7. WE WILL BEAR THE IMAGE OF THE HEAVENLY

Our final identity will reflect Christ.

a) We Bear Adam's Image Now (1 Corinthians 15:49)
Our present bodies belong to the earthly order.

b) We Shall Bear Christ's Image (1 Corinthians 15:49)
The believer's future is to reflect the heavenly Christ.

c) Christ Is The Pattern (1 Corinthians 15:47)
Jesus is the heavenly man.

d) Transformation Is Our Destiny (Romans 8:29)
God's purpose is that believers become conformed to the image of His Son.

8. OUR HEAVENLY BODY WILL BE FIT FOR ETERNAL LIFE

The resurrection body will be perfectly suited for eternity.

a) It Will Be Spiritual (1 Corinthians 15:44)
The resurrection body will be fully suited to the life of the Spirit.

b) It Will Be Eternal (2 Corinthians 5:1)
It will not be temporary like our present earthly dwelling.

c) It Will Be Free From Corruption (1 Corinthians 15:50)
Our future existence will not be governed by decay.

d) It Will Be Fit For God's Presence (Revelation 21:3)
God's people will dwell with Him forever.

9. THE HOPE OF OUR HEAVENLY BODY SHOULD CHANGE OUR PRESENT LIFE

Future transformation should influence present conduct.

a) Pursue Purity (1 John 3:3)
The hope of becoming like Christ should motivate holy living.

b) Set Your Mind On Things Above (Colossians 3:1-2)
Eternal realities should shape our priorities.

c) Do Not Live For The Flesh (Romans 8:12-13)
Believers should not be controlled by sinful desires.

d) Live For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our present bodies should be used to honour God.

10. OUR FUTURE TRANSFORMATION GIVES US HOPE

The heavenly body is part of God's glorious promise.

a) We Have A Heavenly Dwelling (2 Corinthians 5:1)
God has prepared an eternal dwelling for His people.

b) Christ Will Return (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
The resurrection will take place in connection with Christ's coming.

c) We Will Be Changed (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)
God will transform His people in an instant.

d) We Will Be With The Lord Forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
The ultimate hope is eternal fellowship with Christ.

CONCLUSION

Our heavenly body is part of the glorious hope promised to everyone who belongs to Christ. The present body is temporary, perishable, weak, and subject to death, but the resurrection body will be imperishable, glorious, powerful, and perfectly suited for eternal life. As Paul declares, “as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.”

Therefore, we should not allow the weaknesses and limitations of our present bodies to make us lose hope. Our present condition is not our final condition. Christ will transform His people and give them bodies suited for eternity. Let this hope inspire us to pursue holiness, serve God faithfully, endure trials patiently, and live every day looking forward to the glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, strengthen my faith in the promise of the resurrection and the transformation of my body, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to live with the hope of eternity continually before my eyes, in Jesus name.

3. Father, deliver me from every attitude that makes me focus only on temporary earthly things, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me grace to pursue holiness as I await the glorious transformation You have promised, in Jesus name.

5. Father, strengthen me in every season of physical weakness, knowing that my future is secured in Christ, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me to use my present body, strength, and abilities for Your glory, in Jesus name.

7. Father, conform my character increasingly to the image of Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, comfort those who are suffering physically with the hope of the glorious resurrection, in Jesus name.

9. Father, make me steadfast and faithful in Your service until Christ returns, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, keep me in Christ until the day I receive the glorious body You have prepared for Your people and dwell with You forever, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Your hope in the resurrection shall never be disappointed.

2. The weaknesses and limitations of this present life shall not determine your eternal destiny.

3. You shall continually grow in the character and likeness of Jesus Christ.

4. Grace shall enable you to live a holy and consecrated life while awaiting Christ's return.

5. Every season of suffering shall give way to eternal glory in Christ.

6. You shall use your body, strength, gifts, and abilities to glorify God.

7. The hope of resurrection shall give you courage in every season of difficulty.

8. You shall remain steadfast, unmoveable, and fruitful in the work of the Lord.

9. You shall not lose your eternal inheritance through discouragement, temptation, or spiritual carelessness.

10. When Christ comes, you shall be transformed, bear the image of the heavenly, receive your glorious resurrection body, and dwell with the Lord forever, in Jesus name.
