Description: Christian love is not merely an emotion; it is a deliberate commitment to seek the spiritual, emotional, and practical good of others. Love builds where pride destroys, restores where criticism wounds, and strengthens where selfishness divides.

INTRODUCTION

The Church is made up of people from different backgrounds, levels of understanding, personalities, experiences, and spiritual maturity. Because of these differences, believers can easily misunderstand one another or use their knowledge, freedom, position, or spiritual gifts in ways that hurt others. Paul therefore gives a powerful principle in 1 Corinthians 8:1: “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”

To edify means to build up, strengthen, encourage, or contribute to the spiritual wellbeing of another person. Christian love is therefore constructive. It does not seek to prove that it is superior; it seeks to help others become stronger in Christ. Love asks, “How can I help this person grow?” rather than, “How can I show that I am right?”

A church, family, marriage, ministry, or friendship becomes stronger when its members deliberately practise this kind of love. God calls us to become builders, not destroyers. Our words, attitudes, decisions, and actions should leave people stronger in faith and closer to Christ.

1. UNDERSTAND THE BUILDING POWER OF LOVE

Love has the ability to strengthen people's lives.

a) Love Edifies (1 Corinthians 8:1)
True Christian love seeks to build others up rather than inflate the ego.

b) Love Encourages (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Believers should use their words to strengthen those who may be discouraged.

c) Love Strengthens The Weak (Romans 15:1)
Spiritual maturity is demonstrated by helping weaker believers rather than despising them.

d) Love Promotes Growth (Ephesians 4:15-16)
When believers operate in love, the entire body of Christ becomes stronger.

Biblical Example: Barnabas was known as an encourager and strengthened the early believers through his ministry (Acts 4:36-37; 11:22-24).

2. LET YOUR WORDS BUILD OTHERS

Words have tremendous power.

a) Speak Words That Give Grace (Ephesians 4:29)
Our conversations should impart grace to those who hear us.

b) Encourage The Discouraged (Proverbs 12:25)
A timely word can lift a burdened heart.

c) Correct With Gentleness (Galatians 6:1)
Correction should restore people rather than humiliate them.

d) Avoid Destructive Speech (Proverbs 18:21)
Words can either produce life or contribute to destruction.

Biblical Example: Jesus restored Peter after his denial rather than permanently defining him by his failure (John 21:15-17).

3. LOVE BUILDS THROUGH FORGIVENESS

No relationship can remain healthy without forgiveness.

a) Forgive As Christ Forgave You (Colossians 3:13)
Our forgiveness of others should reflect the grace we have received from Christ.

b) Do Not Keep A Record Of Wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Love does not continually rehearse past offences to punish others.

c) Restore Broken Relationships (Matthew 5:23-24)
God desires reconciliation where reconciliation is possible and appropriate.

d) Overcome Evil With Good (Romans 12:21)
Love refuses to respond to wrongdoing by becoming equally destructive.

Biblical Example: Joseph forgave his brothers despite the severe harm they had caused him and chose reconciliation rather than revenge (Genesis 50:15-21).

4. LOVE REQUIRES HUMILITY

Pride tears down, but humility creates room for others to flourish.

a) Consider Others Better Than Yourself (Philippians 2:3)
Humility removes the need to prove superiority.

b) Look Beyond Your Own Interests (Philippians 2:4)
Love notices the needs and concerns of others.

c) Do Not Boast (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Love does not use achievements, knowledge, or position to elevate itself.

d) Follow Christ's Example (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus demonstrated the highest form of humility through sacrificial service.

Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet and taught them that greatness is expressed through humble service (John 13:3-15).

5. LOVE RESPECTS SPIRITUAL DIFFERENCES

Christian maturity requires patience with believers who are at different stages of growth.

a) Receive The Weak In Faith (Romans 14:1)
Spiritual differences should not automatically become reasons for rejection.

b) Do Not Despise Others (Romans 14:10)
One believer's level of understanding should not become an excuse for contempt.

c) Avoid Becoming A Stumbling Block (1 Corinthians 8:9)
Christian freedom should never be exercised carelessly when it could damage another person's faith.

d) Pursue Peace And Edification (Romans 14:19)
The mature believer prioritises the spiritual wellbeing of others.

Biblical Example: Paul was willing to limit his own freedom rather than cause another believer to stumble (1 Corinthians 8:13).

6. LOVE SERVES RATHER THAN SEEKS TO BE SERVED

Christlike love expresses itself through service.

a) Serve One Another In Love (Galatians 5:13)
Christian freedom should create opportunities to serve.

b) Follow Christ's Example (Mark 10:45)
Jesus demonstrated greatness through serving others.

c) Meet Practical Needs (1 John 3:17-18)
Love must become visible through practical actions.

d) Give Without Selfish Motives (Acts 20:35)
There is blessing in giving and serving others sacrificially.

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan demonstrated genuine love by stopping to help a wounded stranger at personal cost (Luke 10:30-37).

7. LOVE BUILDS THE CHURCH

A church grows stronger when its members deliberately edify one another.

a) Encourage One Another (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Christian fellowship should stimulate love and good works.

b) Use Spiritual Gifts To Build Others (1 Peter 4:10)
Every believer has opportunities to serve and strengthen the body of Christ.

c) Pursue Unity (Ephesians 4:3)
Love helps preserve the unity of the Spirit.

d) Bear With One Another (Ephesians 4:2)
Patience is necessary because the Church contains people at different stages of maturity.

Biblical Example: The early Church shared resources, fellowship, prayer, and teaching, creating a community where believers were strengthened together (Acts 2:42-47).

8. MAKE LOVE YOUR DAILY CHRISTIAN PRACTICE

Love must become a lifestyle rather than an occasional action.

a) Love In Deed And Truth (1 John 3:18)
Genuine love is demonstrated through action.

b) Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:44)
Christian love extends beyond those who already love us.

c) Let Love Govern Everything (1 Corinthians 16:14)
Every Christian activity should be conducted with love.

d) Abide In God's Love (John 15:9-10)
Our ability to love others flows from remaining connected to Christ.

Biblical Example: Stephen demonstrated Christlike love even while being persecuted, praying for those who were killing him (Acts 7:59-60).

CONCLUSION

Love that builds up is one of the clearest marks of spiritual maturity. It does not mean ignoring sin, compromising truth, or refusing to correct wrongdoing. Rather, it means that even when correction is necessary, our motive remains restoration and the spiritual wellbeing of the other person.

Let us therefore become builders wherever God has placed us. Build your marriage with love. Build your family with encouragement. Build the Church through service. Build young believers through patience. Build wounded people through compassion. Build relationships through forgiveness. Above all, let everything we do be governed by the love of Christ.
