Description: Knowledge is valuable, but knowledge without love can produce pride, arguments, and spiritual harm. Christian maturity is demonstrated when biblical knowledge is governed by love, humility, wisdom, and concern for the spiritual wellbeing of others.

INTRODUCTION

Knowledge is an important part of Christian growth. God wants His people to know His Word, understand His truth, discern right from wrong, and grow in spiritual wisdom. However, 1 Corinthians 8:1 warns that knowledge, when separated from love, can become a source of pride. A person may know many things about God and yet fail to reflect the character of God.

Paul contrasts knowledge that “puffeth up” with love that “edifieth.” Knowledge can make a person feel superior, while love seeks to build others up. The problem is therefore not knowledge itself but knowledge without the humility and compassion that should accompany it.

True Christianity brings knowledge and love together. We need knowledge to know what is right, but we need love to know how to communicate and apply what is right. The mature believer does not merely ask, “Am I right?” but also asks, “Will my attitude, words, and actions help another person grow in Christ?”

1. VALUE THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

The Bible does not condemn knowledge; it encourages believers to pursue it.

a) Seek Godly Wisdom (Proverbs 2:6)
True wisdom comes from God and should lead us closer to Him.

b) Grow In The Knowledge Of Christ (2 Peter 3:18)
Christian growth requires continual learning and spiritual development.

c) Know The Word Of God (2 Timothy 3:15-17)
Scriptural knowledge equips believers for righteous living and effective service.

d) Combine Knowledge With Understanding (Proverbs 4:7)
Knowledge must be properly understood and applied to everyday life.

Biblical Example: Apollos was described as eloquent and mighty in the Scriptures, yet he remained teachable and received further instruction from Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:24-26).

2. BEWARE OF KNOWLEDGE THAT PRODUCES PRIDE

Knowledge becomes dangerous when it makes us feel superior to others.

a) Knowledge Can Puff Up (1 Corinthians 8:1)
Knowledge without love can inflate the ego rather than transform the character.

b) Pride Goes Before Destruction (Proverbs 16:18)
Spiritual knowledge does not protect a person from pride if humility is neglected.

c) Do Not Think More Highly Of Yourself (Romans 12:3)
We must evaluate ourselves with humility rather than superiority.

d) Remember The Source Of What You Know (1 Corinthians 4:7)
Whatever we possess, including knowledge, ultimately comes from God.

Biblical Example: The Pharisees possessed extensive knowledge of the Scriptures but sometimes used that knowledge to condemn rather than restore people (Matthew 23:1-7).

3. LET LOVE GOVERN YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge should be controlled by love.

a) Love Builds Others Up (1 Corinthians 8:1)
The purpose of Christian knowledge should ultimately be edification.

b) Love Seeks The Good Of Others (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Love does not focus exclusively on personal rights or preferences.

c) Love Is Not Self-Seeking (1 Corinthians 13:5)
A knowledgeable believer must resist using truth to elevate himself.

d) Speak The Truth In Love (Ephesians 4:15)
Truth should be communicated with compassion, wisdom, and grace.

Biblical Example: Jesus knew the weaknesses and failures of people, yet He approached sinners with truth and compassion, calling them to repentance and transformation (John 4:7-26).

4. REMEMBER THAT KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS INSUFFICIENT

Knowing truth does not automatically mean that we live according to it.

a) Be Doers Of The Word (James 1:22)
Biblical knowledge must produce obedience.

b) Knowledge Without Love Is Empty (1 Corinthians 13:2)
Even remarkable spiritual knowledge is worthless when love is absent.

c) Let Truth Transform Your Character (Colossians 3:10)
The goal of knowing Christ is becoming increasingly like Him.

d) Practise What You Know (Philippians 4:9)
Believers are called to put biblical instruction into practice.

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan demonstrated that knowing what love requires is not enough; he acted compassionately towards the wounded man (Luke 10:30-37).

5. USE YOUR KNOWLEDGE TO EDIFY OTHERS

God gives knowledge so that it can become a blessing.

a) Teach With Gentleness (2 Timothy 2:24-25)
Those who instruct others must do so with patience and gentleness.

b) Encourage One Another (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Knowledge should strengthen and encourage fellow believers.

c) Correct With Restoration In Mind (Galatians 6:1)
Correction should aim at restoring the person rather than humiliating them.

d) Build Up The Body Of Christ (Ephesians 4:12-13)
Our knowledge and gifts should contribute to the spiritual maturity of others.

Biblical Example: Priscilla and Aquila did not publicly embarrass Apollos for what he did not yet understand; they took him aside and explained God's way more accurately (Acts 18:26).

6. DO NOT USE KNOWLEDGE TO CONDEMN OTHERS

Spiritual knowledge must never become a weapon of superiority.

a) Avoid Judging Motives (1 Corinthians 4:5)
Only God fully knows the motives of the human heart.

b) Do Not Despise A Weaker Believer (Romans 14:1-4)
Different levels of spiritual understanding require patience and grace.

c) Avoid Unnecessary Arguments (2 Timothy 2:23)
Not every disagreement deserves a prolonged argument.

d) Pursue Peace And Edification (Romans 14:19)
The mature believer prioritises peace and spiritual growth.

Biblical Example: Jesus corrected His disciples when they wanted to call down judgment upon those who did not receive Him (Luke 9:51-56).

7. GROW IN BOTH KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE

Christian maturity requires both truth and character.

a) Grow In Grace And Knowledge (2 Peter 3:18)
We are called to grow intellectually and spiritually in Christ.

b) Increase In Love (Philippians 1:9)
Paul prayed that believers' love would abound increasingly in knowledge and discernment.

c) Let Love Direct Your Freedom (Galatians 5:13)
Christian liberty should become an opportunity to serve others.

d) Pursue Christlike Character (Colossians 3:12-14)
Knowledge must be accompanied by compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and love.

Biblical Example: Jesus perfectly combined truth and grace. He never compromised truth, yet He consistently demonstrated compassion towards people (John 1:14).

CONCLUSION

Knowledge is necessary for Christian growth, but knowledge without love can become a source of pride. A believer may know doctrines, Scriptures, theology, church history, and many spiritual principles and still fail to reflect Christ if love is absent. God is not merely interested in how much we know; He is interested in what that knowledge is producing in our character and relationships.

Let us therefore pursue both truth and love. Let our knowledge make us humble rather than proud, compassionate rather than condemning, and useful rather than argumentative. The highest expression of Christian knowledge is not merely knowing more about God but becoming more like Christ and using what we know to build others up.
