THE PURPOSE OF PROPHECY

Description: Prophecy is a spiritual gift through which God communicates a message that strengthens, encourages, and comforts His people. First Corinthians 14 teaches that prophecy should operate under the authority of Scripture, in love, and for the edification of the Church. Its purpose is not to glorify the prophet but to glorify God and build His people.

INTRODUCTION

The Corinthian church was richly endowed with spiritual gifts, but the believers did not always understand how those gifts should function within the gathered church. Some manifestations were being exercised in ways that created competition and disorder. Paul therefore devoted significant attention to explaining how spiritual gifts should contribute to the spiritual growth of the congregation. In this context, he gives special attention to prophecy.

First Corinthians 14:1 instructs believers to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy. Paul then explains that prophecy has a particular advantage in the public gathering because it speaks to people in a way that can directly strengthen, encourage, and comfort them. The emphasis is therefore not on the status of the person prophesying but on the benefit received by the Church.

Prophecy must consequently be understood within the larger framework of Scripture, love, spiritual discernment, and church order. Genuine prophetic ministry should never manipulate people, replace Scripture, promote the prophet, or create confusion. Its proper purpose is to glorify Christ, strengthen believers, encourage faithful obedience to God, and bring comfort according to God's truth.

1. PROPHECY IS A SPIRITUAL GIFT

Prophecy originates from the Holy Spirit and is given for ministry.

a) Gifts Come From The Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)
The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts according to His will.

b) Prophecy Is Among The Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:10)
God equips some believers to function prophetically.

c) Gifts Are Given For The Common Good (1 Corinthians 12:7)
No spiritual gift is given merely for personal prestige.

d) Gifts Must Be Used Faithfully (1 Peter 4:10)
Believers are stewards of whatever God has entrusted to them.

2. PROPHECY EDIFIES THE CHURCH

The first stated purpose of prophecy is edification.

a) Prophecy Builds Up (1 Corinthians 14:3)
Prophetic ministry should strengthen the spiritual life of believers.

b) Prophecy Promotes Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 4:12-13)
Everything God gives the Church should contribute towards maturity.

c) Prophecy Strengthens The Weak (Romans 15:1)
God can use prophetic ministry to reinforce those who are struggling.

d) Prophecy Must Serve The Body (1 Corinthians 14:12)
The desire for spiritual gifts should be connected with the desire to edify the Church.

Biblical Principle: The value of prophetic ministry should be measured by whether it genuinely strengthens God's people.

3. PROPHECY EXHORTS BELIEVERS

Prophecy can encourage people to remain faithful to God.

a) Prophecy Exhorts (1 Corinthians 14:3)
It can call believers towards obedience and spiritual alertness.

b) Prophecy Encourages Faithfulness (Hebrews 10:23-25)
God's people need encouragement to remain steadfast.

c) Prophecy Can Challenge Spiritual Complacency (Revelation 2-3)
Christ's messages to the churches included both encouragement and correction.

d) Prophecy Should Point People Back To God (1 Corinthians 14:24-25)
Its effect should lead people towards recognition of God's presence and truth.

4. PROPHECY COMFORTS THE PEOPLE OF GOD

God can use prophetic ministry to bring hope and encouragement during difficult seasons.

a) Prophecy Brings Comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3)
God can use a prophetic word to strengthen a discouraged heart.

b) God Is The God Of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
All genuine comfort ultimately comes from God.

c) Prophecy Strengthens Hope (Romans 15:4)
God's revealed truth gives believers confidence and hope.

d) Comfort Must Be Truthful (John 14:16-18)
Christian comfort must be consistent with God's revealed Word.

Biblical Example: Agabus communicated prophetic warnings that helped believers prepare for coming circumstances (Acts 11:27-30; 21:10-11).

5. PROPHECY MUST OPERATE IN LOVE

Spiritual gifts without love can become spiritually destructive.

a) Pursue Love First (1 Corinthians 14:1)
Paul places love immediately before the instruction to desire prophecy.

b) Love Is The Correct Motivation (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
A spiritual gift exercised without love loses its proper value.

c) Love Seeks The Good Of Others (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Prophecy must serve people rather than the ego of the minister.

d) Love Does Not Manipulate (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Genuine prophetic ministry does not exploit fear or vulnerability.

6. PROPHECY MUST AGREE WITH SCRIPTURE

No prophetic message should contradict God's revealed Word.

a) Scripture Is The Standard (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
The Bible is the authoritative standard for Christian doctrine and practice.

b) Test Every Prophetic Word (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21)
Believers are instructed not to despise prophecy but to test everything.

c) Test The Spirits (1 John 4:1)
Not every spiritual claim comes from God.

d) Hold Fast To What Is Good (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
After testing, believers should retain what is genuinely consistent with God's truth.

7. PROPHECY SHOULD NOT REPLACE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Believers must seek God, not merely prophetic messages.

a) Seek God Himself (Jeremiah 29:13)
Our primary pursuit should be God.

b) Know God's Word (Colossians 3:16)
Scripture provides foundational guidance for Christian living.

c) Be Led By The Spirit (Romans 8:14)
Every believer should develop sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

d) Walk By Faith (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Our lives must be governed by faith in God rather than dependence on predictions.

Important Principle: Prophecy can confirm, encourage, or warn, but it must never become a substitute for prayer, Scripture, wisdom, and obedience to God.

8. PROPHECY SHOULD BE ORDERLY

Spiritual gifts should contribute to order rather than confusion.

a) Let Prophecy Be Judged (1 Corinthians 14:29)
Prophetic messages should be discerned within the church.

b) Speak One By One (1 Corinthians 14:31)
Order allows the congregation to hear and evaluate what is said.

c) God Is Not The Author Of Confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33)
God's work should not produce disorder.

d) Let Everything Be Done Decently (1 Corinthians 14:40)
Spiritual manifestations should operate within biblical order.

9. PROPHECY SHOULD GLORIFY GOD

The prophet must never become more important than the God who gives the message.

a) The Spirit Glorifies Christ (John 16:14)
The Holy Spirit directs attention towards Jesus.

b) Gifts Are God's Grace (1 Corinthians 12:11)
No believer should boast as though a spiritual gift originated from personal greatness.

c) God Deserves The Glory (1 Peter 4:11)
Ministry should result in praise to God.

d) Ministers Must Remain Humble (James 4:6)
God's grace operates powerfully through humble vessels.

10. PROPHECY SHOULD PRODUCE SPIRITUAL FRUIT

The ultimate test is not excitement but spiritual benefit.

a) Prophecy Should Strengthen Faith (1 Corinthians 14:3)
It should build believers spiritually.

b) Prophecy Should Encourage Obedience (Deuteronomy 18:18-22)
A genuine message from God should be treated with appropriate seriousness and discernment.

c) Prophecy Should Comfort The Broken (1 Corinthians 14:3)
God can use prophetic ministry to bring hope to hurting people.

d) Prophecy Should Point To Christ (Revelation 19:10)
The testimony of Jesus remains central to genuine prophetic witness.

CONCLUSION

The purpose of prophecy is not to make the prophet famous, create fear, control people's decisions, or satisfy curiosity about the future. According to First Corinthians 14:3, prophecy speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and comfort. It is therefore a ministry gift intended to strengthen God's people and contribute to the health of the Church.

The Church should neither despise prophecy nor accept every prophetic claim without discernment. We must pursue love, desire spiritual gifts, test prophetic messages by Scripture, maintain proper church order, and ensure that Christ remains at the centre. When prophecy operates according to God's purpose, it strengthens believers, encourages obedience, brings comfort to the hurting, and glorifies Jesus Christ.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, give me a proper understanding of spiritual gifts and their purpose in the Body of Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to pursue love while earnestly desiring and exercising spiritual gifts, in Jesus name.

3. Father, raise genuine prophetic ministers who will speak according to Your truth and for the edification of Your Church, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, let every prophetic ministry in my life and church strengthen, encourage, and comfort Your people, in Jesus name.

5. Father, deliver Your Church from false prophecy, manipulation, deception, and every misuse of spiritual gifts, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, give us discernment to test every prophetic word and hold firmly to what is good, in Jesus name.

7. Father, help me never to depend on prophecy more than I depend on Your Word, prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, establish biblical order and spiritual maturity in the exercise of prophetic gifts in Your Church, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let every genuine prophetic word point people to Jesus Christ and bring glory to Your name, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, make Your Church spiritually discerning, prophetically sensitive, biblically grounded, and firmly established in divine love, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall grow in spiritual discernment and understand the proper operation of spiritual gifts.

2. You shall pursue divine love while walking in the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit.

3. Every spiritual gift God has entrusted to you shall be used for His glory and the edification of His Church.

4. You shall receive grace to discern between what is genuinely from God and what is not.

5. You shall not be deceived, manipulated, or controlled by false prophetic declarations.

6. The Word of God shall remain the foundation and standard for your spiritual life.

7. Every genuine word from God concerning your life shall accomplish its divine purpose.

8. You shall walk in spiritual maturity, biblical order, wisdom, and discernment.

9. Your life and ministry shall strengthen the weak, encourage the discouraged, and comfort the hurting.

10. Every prophetic expression in your life shall exalt Jesus Christ, glorify God, and build His Church, in Jesus name.
