FREEDOM UNDER CHRIST

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Description: True Christian freedom is not freedom to live without restraint; it is freedom to willingly submit to Christ and serve others. The believer who is free in Christ uses that freedom responsibly, sacrificially, and strategically for the advancement of the Gospel.

INTRODUCTION

Freedom is highly valued in human society, but biblical freedom has a deeper meaning. Through Christ, believers have been liberated from the dominion of sin, condemnation, and spiritual bondage. Yet this freedom does not make us independent of God. We are free under Christ, and our freedom finds its proper purpose in loving God and serving others.

Paul provides a remarkable example in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. He declared that although he was free from all people, he voluntarily made himself a servant to all. Paul did not surrender his convictions or compromise the Gospel; rather, he surrendered personal preferences and privileges so that more people could be reached with the message of Christ.

This is the paradox of Christian liberty: we are free, yet we willingly serve; we have rights, yet we surrender them; we are liberated, yet we submit ourselves to Christ. The highest expression of freedom is not doing everything we want but having the freedom and maturity to choose what pleases God.

1. UNDERSTAND THAT CHRIST HAS SET YOU FREE

Christian freedom begins with Christ.

a) Christ Has Made Us Free (Galatians 5:1)
Our liberty is based on Christ's finished work, not human achievement.

b) We Are Free From Sin's Dominion (Romans 6:14)
Sin should no longer control the believer's life.

c) We Are Free From Condemnation (Romans 8:1)
Those who are in Christ no longer live under condemnation.

d) We Are Free To Serve God (Galatians 5:13)
Freedom creates an opportunity to serve rather than indulge ourselves.

Biblical Example: The Israelites were delivered from Egyptian bondage so that they could serve God (Exodus 8:1; 12:31).

2. REMEMBER THAT FREEDOM IS UNDER CHRIST

Christian freedom is never absolute independence.

a) Christ Is Our Lord (Romans 14:8)
Our lives belong to Christ, whether we live or die.

b) We Were Bought With A Price (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Redemption means that our lives are no longer our own.

c) We Must Present Ourselves To God (Romans 12:1)
Freedom should result in willing consecration.

d) Obedience Demonstrates True Freedom (John 14:15)
Loving Christ means submitting our lives to His commands.

Biblical Example: Paul called himself a servant of Jesus Christ because his freedom was willingly submitted to Christ's lordship (Romans 1:1).

3. USE YOUR FREEDOM TO SERVE OTHERS

Paul's freedom produced service.

a) Become A Servant To All (1 Corinthians 9:19)
Paul voluntarily chose servanthood to reach more people.

b) Serve In Love (Galatians 5:13)
Christian liberty should express itself through loving service.

c) Seek The Good Of Others (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Freedom should never become an excuse for selfishness.

d) Follow Christ's Example (Mark 10:45)
Jesus demonstrated that true greatness is expressed through service.

Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet, demonstrating that spiritual greatness is inseparable from humble service (John 13:12-15).

4. BECOME FLEXIBLE WITHOUT COMPROMISING TRUTH

Paul adapted his methods without abandoning his message.

a) Become As A Jew To The Jews (1 Corinthians 9:20)
Paul understood how to communicate effectively within different cultural contexts.

b) Become As One Without The Law (1 Corinthians 9:21)
He adapted his approach while remaining under Christ's law.

c) Become Weak To The Weak (1 Corinthians 9:22)
He deliberately identified with those who needed patience and understanding.

d) Remain Faithful To The Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:23)
Flexibility in method must never become compromise in truth.

Biblical Example: At Athens, Paul communicated the Gospel in a way that connected with his audience while still proclaiming the true God and the resurrection (Acts 17:22-31).

5. SACRIFICE PERSONAL PREFERENCES FOR THE GOSPEL

Kingdom purpose sometimes requires personal sacrifice.

a) Surrender Legitimate Rights (1 Corinthians 9:12)
Paul willingly laid aside certain rights to remove barriers to the Gospel.

b) Become All Things To All People (1 Corinthians 9:22)
His flexibility was motivated by a desire to win souls.

c) Count Others More Important (Philippians 2:3-4)
Christian freedom should produce humility.

d) Seek Gospel Opportunities (Colossians 4:5-6)
Wise believers recognise opportunities to communicate Christ.

Biblical Example: Paul chose not to insist on certain privileges because he wanted nothing to hinder the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:12, 15).

6. DO NOT CONFUSE FREEDOM WITH LICENCE

Freedom does not mean permission to sin.

a) Do Not Use Liberty For The Flesh (Galatians 5:13)
Christian liberty must never become an excuse for sinful behaviour.

b) Not Everything Is Profitable (1 Corinthians 6:12)
A mature believer considers both permission and consequences.

c) Avoid Spiritual Bondage (1 Corinthians 6:12)
Freedom should never place us under the control of harmful desires.

d) Pursue Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)
True freedom produces a life increasingly separated unto God.

Biblical Example: Joseph understood that freedom from immediate accountability did not give him permission to sin against God (Genesis 39:9).

7. LIVE FOR THE SALVATION OF OTHERS

Paul's freedom had a Gospel purpose.

a) That I Might Gain The More (1 Corinthians 9:19)
Paul's primary concern was winning people to Christ.

b) Become Weak To Gain The Weak (1 Corinthians 9:22)
He willingly adapted his approach for those who needed patient engagement.

c) Do All For The Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:23)
His choices were governed by kingdom priorities.

d) Seek The Salvation Of Many (1 Corinthians 10:33)
Paul deliberately avoided selfish behaviour that could hinder others from receiving Christ.

Biblical Example: Paul's missionary ministry demonstrates his willingness to cross cultural and social barriers to proclaim Christ (Acts 16-20).

8. MAKE CHRIST THE CENTRE OF YOUR FREEDOM

Freedom reaches its highest purpose when Christ remains at the centre.

a) Live For Christ (Galatians 2:20)
The believer's life is now centred on Christ.

b) Glorify God In Everything (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our liberty should ultimately bring honour to God.

c) Follow The Mind Of Christ (Philippians 2:5)
Christ's humility should shape how we use our freedom.

d) Remain Faithful To The End (2 Timothy 4:7)
The goal is not merely to begin well but to finish faithfully.

Biblical Example: Paul could testify at the end of his ministry that he had fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).

CONCLUSION

Freedom under Christ is a beautiful paradox. We are free from sin, yet we willingly submit to Christ. We are free from human domination, yet we choose to serve others. We possess legitimate rights, yet we can surrender those rights when doing so advances the Gospel. Christian freedom is therefore not self-centred independence but Christ-centred service.

Let us never use our liberty as an excuse for selfishness or compromise. May our freedom become a platform for serving people, reaching the lost, strengthening the weak, and glorifying God. Like Paul, may we be able to say that our freedom is not merely for ourselves but for the Gospel and the salvation of others.
