PEACE IN THE CHURCH

Description: Peace is essential to the health, unity, and effectiveness of the Church. God does not produce confusion, rivalry, strife, or disorder among His people. He calls believers to pursue peace, walk in love, resolve conflicts biblically, and preserve the unity of the Spirit so that the Church can fulfil its mission effectively.

INTRODUCTION

The Church is a spiritual family made up of people from different backgrounds, personalities, experiences, and levels of maturity. Because of these differences, disagreements may sometimes arise. However, God never intended His Church to be characterised by constant quarrels, division, competition, or confusion. His desire is that His people live together in peace and unity.

Paul's statement in First Corinthians 14:33 was made in the context of correcting disorder in the Corinthian church. Spiritual gifts were being exercised without sufficient order, and the result was confusion. Paul reminded the believers that God is not the author of confusion but of peace. The character of God should therefore be reflected in the way His Church conducts itself.

Peace in the Church does not mean avoiding every difficult conversation or pretending that problems do not exist. Biblical peace involves truth, forgiveness, humility, patience, reconciliation, and a willingness to pursue the good of others. When believers deliberately walk in peace, the Church becomes a powerful testimony of the transforming grace of Christ.

1. GOD IS THE AUTHOR OF PEACE

Peace begins with the character of God Himself.

a) God Is Not The Author Of Confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33)
Confusion, disorder, and destructive strife do not reflect God's nature.

b) God Is The God Of Peace (Romans 15:33)
Peace is an important expression of God's character.

c) Christ Is Our Peace (Ephesians 2:14)
Jesus reconciles us to God and breaks down barriers between people.

d) The Holy Spirit Produces Peace (Galatians 5:22)
Peace is part of the fruit produced by the Spirit.

2. THE CHURCH IS CALLED TO UNITY

Peace and unity are closely connected.

a) One Body (Ephesians 4:4)
Believers are members of one spiritual Body.

b) One Spirit (Ephesians 4:4)
The same Holy Spirit lives within God's people.

c) One Lord (Ephesians 4:5)
Jesus Christ is the common Lord of every believer.

d) Keep The Unity (Ephesians 4:3)
Believers must deliberately preserve the unity God has given.

3. PEACE REQUIRES HUMILITY

Pride is one of the greatest enemies of church peace.

a) Walk In Humility (Ephesians 4:2)
Humility enables believers to relate to one another graciously.

b) Value Others (Philippians 2:3)
We should not allow personal ambition to dominate relationships.

c) Consider Others' Interests (Philippians 2:4)
Peace grows when believers learn to consider how their actions affect others.

d) Receive Correction (Proverbs 12:1)
A teachable spirit prevents many unnecessary conflicts.

4. LOVE PRESERVES PEACE

Christian peace cannot exist without genuine love.

a) Love Is Patient (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Patience gives people room to grow and change.

b) Love Is Kind (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Kindness can prevent unnecessary wounds and disagreements.

c) Love Does Not Keep A Record Of Wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Forgiveness prevents past offences from continually poisoning relationships.

d) Love Rejoices In Truth (1 Corinthians 13:6)
Biblical peace does not require compromising truth.

5. BELIEVERS MUST PURSUE PEACE

Peace requires intentional action.

a) Follow Peace (Romans 14:19)
Believers should actively pursue whatever contributes to peace.

b) Live Peaceably With Others (Romans 12:18)
We should do everything within our power to maintain peaceful relationships.

c) Seek Reconciliation (Matthew 5:23-24)
Jesus teaches the importance of resolving broken relationships.

d) Pursue Peace Continually (Psalm 34:14)
Peace should become a deliberate way of life.

6. CONFLICT MUST BE HANDLED BIBLICALLY

Problems should be addressed with wisdom and grace.

a) Speak Directly (Matthew 18:15)
Private and honest communication can resolve many misunderstandings.

b) Avoid Gossip (Proverbs 16:28)
Gossip spreads conflict rather than solving it.

c) Seek Witnesses When Necessary (Matthew 18:16)
Serious matters may require responsible involvement.

d) Follow Godly Order (Matthew 18:17-18)
The Church must handle difficult matters according to Christ's instructions.

7. FORGIVENESS PROTECTS CHURCH PEACE

Unforgiveness creates deep divisions.

a) Forgive As Christ Forgave You (Colossians 3:13)
Christians are called to extend the forgiveness they have received.

b) Bear With One Another (Colossians 3:13)
Patience is necessary because believers are still growing.

c) Release Offences (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Bitterness must not be allowed to control relationships.

d) Choose Grace Over Revenge (Romans 12:19)
Vengeance belongs to God.

8. LEADERSHIP SHOULD PROMOTE PEACE

Church leaders have a special responsibility to protect unity.

a) Shepherd God's People (1 Peter 5:2-3)
Leadership should be exercised through service rather than domination.

b) Correct With Gentleness (2 Timothy 2:24-25)
Correction should aim at restoration rather than humiliation.

c) Reject Partiality (James 2:1)
Favouritism can create resentment and division.

d) Be An Example (1 Timothy 4:12)
Leaders should model the character they expect from others.

9. PEACE CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT FOR GROWTH

A peaceful Church is better positioned to fulfil its mission.

a) Peace Promotes Edification (Romans 14:19)
Believers can concentrate on building one another.

b) Unity Releases Strength (Psalm 133:1-3)
God's people experience blessing when they dwell together in unity.

c) Peace Supports Evangelism (John 13:35)
Christlike love and unity demonstrate that we belong to Jesus.

d) Peace Encourages Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 4:15-16)
A healthy Body grows as members work together in love.

10. BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO BE PEACEMAKERS

Peace is not merely something we enjoy; it is something we help create.

a) Blessed Are The Peacemakers (Matthew 5:9)
Jesus identifies peacemaking as a mark of those who belong to God's family.

b) Pursue Peace With Everyone (Hebrews 12:14)
Peace should extend beyond the local congregation.

c) Speak Words That Build (Ephesians 4:29)
Our words should give grace to those who hear.

d) Let Christ's Peace Rule (Colossians 3:15)
The peace of Christ should govern our hearts and relationships.

CONCLUSION

Peace in the Church is not optional; it is part of God's design for His people. First Corinthians 14:33 reminds us that God is not the author of confusion but of peace. Wherever pride, gossip, bitterness, competition, unforgiveness, and disorder are allowed to dominate, the Church's testimony and effectiveness are weakened.

Let us therefore become peacemakers. Let us walk in humility, speak truth in love, forgive quickly, resolve conflicts biblically, honour one another, and submit ourselves to the peace of Christ. When God's people dwell together in peace, the Church becomes stronger, unity flourishes, spiritual gifts operate more effectively, believers grow, and the world sees a living demonstration of Christ's transforming power.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, let Your peace rule in my heart, my home, and my relationships within the Church, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver our church from confusion, division, strife, jealousy, gossip, and every work of the enemy, in Jesus name.

3. Father, give every believer grace to walk in humility, patience, gentleness, and love, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, help us to forgive one another quickly and completely, just as Christ has forgiven us, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give us wisdom to resolve conflicts biblically and pursue reconciliation wherever there is brokenness, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, make our church leaders instruments of peace, wisdom, unity, justice, and reconciliation, in Jesus name.

7. Father, remove every root of bitterness, resentment, offence, and unforgiveness from among Your people, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, establish genuine unity among the pastors, leaders, workers, and members of Your Church, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let the peace and unity of our church become a powerful testimony that draws people to Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, make me a faithful peacemaker who reflects Your character and contributes continually to the unity and growth of Your Church, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. The peace of Christ shall rule in your heart and in every area of your life.

2. Every spirit of confusion, strife, division, and disorder around you shall be silenced.

3. You shall walk in humility, patience, gentleness, wisdom, and love.

4. You shall receive grace to forgive offences and refuse the bondage of bitterness.

5. God shall give you wisdom to resolve conflicts and restore broken relationships.

6. Your words shall become instruments of healing, reconciliation, encouragement, and peace.

7. Unity shall prevail among the leaders and members of your church.

8. Every scheme of the enemy to divide God's people shall fail.

9. Your church shall experience genuine unity, spiritual growth, divine order, and supernatural blessing.

10. You shall be recognised as a peacemaker, and through your life many relationships shall be restored, the Church shall be strengthened, and Christ shall be glorified, in Jesus name.
