Description: Living with eternal purpose means viewing our lives from God's perspective, prioritising His kingdom, fulfilling our divine assignment, and making daily choices in the light of eternity. The believer must not live merely for temporary pleasure, recognition, possessions, or success, but for God's eternal purposes.
INTRODUCTION
Human beings naturally pursue goals. People work for money, build careers, raise families, acquire possessions, seek recognition, and make plans for the future. These things may have legitimate value, but the Christian must look beyond what is temporary. Our earthly lives are part of a much greater eternal purpose designed by God.
Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 reveal a man who understood the importance of purposeful living. He compared his Christian journey to an athletic race and exercised discipline because he was pursuing an imperishable prize. Paul did not want to waste his life on things that had no eternal significance.
Every believer should therefore ask: What am I living for? What occupies my time, energy, resources, and attention? Will what I am pursuing matter when I stand before Christ? Living with eternal purpose means making today's decisions in the light of eternity.
1. DISCOVER GOD'S PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE
Purpose begins with God.
a) You Were Created For God's Purpose (Ephesians 2:10)
God has prepared good works for every believer to fulfil.
b) God Has A Plan For Your Life (Jeremiah 29:11)
Our lives are not without divine direction.
c) Discover Your Assignment (Acts 20:24)
Paul understood that he had a course to finish.
d) Walk In God's Will (Romans 12:2)
A renewed mind helps us discern God's good, acceptable, and perfect will.
Biblical Example: Esther discovered that her position in the palace had a greater purpose than personal comfort; it was connected to the preservation of God's people (Esther 4:14).
2. LIVE FOR WHAT HAS ETERNAL VALUE
Not everything that appears important today will matter eternally.
a) Store Up Eternal Treasures (Matthew 6:19-20)
Jesus commanded His followers to invest in things that cannot perish.
b) Set Your Mind On Things Above (Colossians 3:1-2)
Our thoughts and priorities should be shaped by eternal realities.
c) Do Not Love The Present World (1 John 2:15-17)
Worldly desires are temporary, but God's will endures forever.
d) Seek God's Kingdom First (Matthew 6:33)
Kingdom priorities must come before material pursuits.
Biblical Example: Moses valued God's eternal reward more than the temporary treasures and pleasures of Egypt (Hebrews 11:24-26).
3. RUN YOUR RACE WITH PURPOSE
Paul refused to live aimlessly.
a) Run To Obtain (1 Corinthians 9:24)
The Christian must pursue God's purpose intentionally.
b) Do Not Run Aimlessly (1 Corinthians 9:26)
Our lives should have spiritual direction.
c) Press Toward The Goal (Philippians 3:14)
Paul continually pursued the high calling of God.
d) Refuse Spiritual Stagnation (Philippians 3:12)
There is always room for greater growth and usefulness.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah remained focused on rebuilding Jerusalem's wall despite repeated attempts to distract him (Nehemiah 6:1-4).
4. DISCIPLINE YOUR LIFE FOR ETERNAL PURPOSE
Purpose without discipline often remains unfulfilled potential.
a) Exercise Self-Control (1 Corinthians 9:25)
Paul recognised that purposeful living requires restraint.
b) Bring Your Body Under Control (1 Corinthians 9:27)
Our physical desires must remain subject to God's purposes.
c) Redeem Your Time (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Time is a precious resource that must be used wisely.
d) Practise Godliness (1 Timothy 4:7-8)
Spiritual discipline prepares us for useful kingdom service.
Biblical Example: Daniel maintained disciplined spiritual habits throughout his years in Babylon (Daniel 6:10).
5. REMOVE WHAT HINDERS YOUR PURPOSE
You cannot run effectively while carrying unnecessary burdens.
a) Lay Aside Every Weight (Hebrews 12:1)
Some things may not be sinful but can still hinder progress.
b) Put Away Sin (Hebrews 12:1)
Sin entangles and weakens spiritual effectiveness.
c) Avoid Distractions (Luke 10:41-42)
Too many earthly concerns can divert our attention from what matters most.
d) Simplify Your Priorities (Matthew 6:33)
The kingdom must remain our first priority.
Biblical Example: Demas abandoned Paul's ministry because his heart became attached to the present world (2 Timothy 4:10).
6. USE YOUR LIFE TO SERVE OTHERS
Eternal purpose is not self-centred.
a) Serve Others In Love (Galatians 5:13)
Christian freedom should produce service.
b) Use Your Gifts For Others (1 Peter 4:10)
God gives gifts so that believers can bless one another.
c) Seek The Good Of Others (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Kingdom-minded believers do not live only for themselves.
d) Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)
One of our greatest eternal assignments is helping others become followers of Christ.
Biblical Example: Paul willingly sacrificed personal rights and comforts to win people to Christ (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).
7. LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Eternity gives significance to our daily choices.
a) We Will Give Account To God (Romans 14:12)
Every believer will personally answer to God.
b) Our Works Will Be Examined (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Our lives and service will be evaluated before Christ.
c) Faithfulness Matters (1 Corinthians 4:2)
God requires His servants to be faithful.
d) Seek God's Approval (Galatians 1:10)
Our ultimate goal should be to please God rather than people.
Biblical Example: Paul continually sought to live with a clear conscience before God and people (Acts 24:16).
8. FINISH YOUR LIFE WITH AN ETERNAL TESTIMONY
The ultimate measure of purposeful living is how we finish.
a) Finish Your Course (2 Timothy 4:7)
Paul completed his God-given assignment.
b) Keep The Faith (2 Timothy 4:7)
He remained faithful to Christ throughout his journey.
c) Expect The Eternal Reward (2 Timothy 4:8)
God has prepared a crown for those who faithfully follow Him.
d) Live So That Your Life Counts (Psalm 90:12)
We should ask God to teach us to number our days wisely.
Biblical Example: Paul reached the end of his life with the testimony that his race had been completed and his faith preserved.
CONCLUSION
Living with eternal purpose means refusing to waste the life God has given us. Our careers, possessions, positions, achievements, and earthly relationships have value, but they must never replace God's kingdom and eternal purposes. Every day is an opportunity to invest our time, gifts, resources, influence, and energy in things that will outlive us.
One day, we will stand before Christ and give an account of how we lived. May we therefore live intentionally, serve faithfully, pursue holiness, win souls, strengthen others, and fulfil our divine assignments. When our earthly race is over, may we have the testimony of Paul: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
