MANY GIFTS, ONE SPIRIT

Description: The Holy Spirit gives different spiritual gifts to believers, but the source is the same Spirit. The diversity of gifts is God's design for building one united body. Believers should therefore value different gifts, reject comparison and competition, and use their individual gifts in love for the edification of the church and the glory of God.

INTRODUCTION

God has deliberately designed His church with diversity. Every believer does not have the same ability, calling, ministry, or spiritual gift. Yet this diversity does not mean division. First Corinthians 12:4-11 teaches that there are different gifts, ministries, and operations, but the same Spirit is working through them all. God's wisdom is displayed through the variety He has placed within the body of Christ.

The Corinthian believers had many spiritual gifts, but they were struggling with pride, comparison, and disorder. Some gifts were being valued above others, creating competition rather than cooperation. Paul therefore reminded them that no matter how different the gifts may be, their source is the same Holy Spirit. The gift should never become more important than the God who gives it.

The lesson remains vital for the church today. We need one another. The preacher needs the intercessor, the teacher needs the evangelist, the administrator needs the encourager, and the giver needs the servant. When every believer recognises that his or her gift is part of God's larger purpose, diversity becomes a source of strength rather than division.

1. RECOGNISE THE DIVERSITY OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

God intentionally gives different gifts to His people.

a) There Are Different Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4)
God does not give every believer the same spiritual function.

b) There Are Different Ministries (1 Corinthians 12:5)
The same gift can be expressed through different forms of ministry.

c) There Are Different Operations (1 Corinthians 12:6)
God works through His people in diverse ways.

d) God Is The Source Of Them All (1 Corinthians 12:6)
Behind the diversity is one sovereign God.

Biblical Example: In Romans 12:6-8, Paul identifies different functions including prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, and mercy.

2. UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS ONE SPIRIT

The diversity of gifts does not mean diversity of spiritual source.

a) The Same Spirit Gives The Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4)
Every genuine spiritual gift originates from the Holy Spirit.

b) The Same Lord Is Served (1 Corinthians 12:5)
Different ministries ultimately serve the same Lord Jesus Christ.

c) The Same God Works Through All (1 Corinthians 12:6)
God is actively working through the diverse ministries of His people.

d) The Trinity Works In Unity (Matthew 28:19)
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together in God's redemptive purpose.

Biblical Example: At Pentecost, believers from different backgrounds were filled with the same Holy Spirit and became witnesses for Christ (Acts 2:1-4).

3. EVERY GIFT IS GIVEN FOR THE COMMON GOOD

Spiritual gifts are not personal trophies.

a) The Manifestation Is Given To Profit (1 Corinthians 12:7)
God gives gifts so that others may benefit.

b) Serve One Another (1 Peter 4:10)
Believers are stewards of God's grace.

c) Build Up The Body (Ephesians 4:12)
Ministry gifts equip believers and strengthen the church.

d) Seek The Good Of Others (Philippians 2:4)
Christian service should be motivated by concern for others.

Biblical Example: Stephen used his Spirit-given wisdom and grace to serve the early church and proclaim Christ effectively (Acts 6:8-10).

4. VALUE GIFTS THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM YOURS

Difference should produce appreciation, not rejection.

a) The Body Has Many Members (1 Corinthians 12:12)
The church cannot function effectively through one type of ministry alone.

b) The Eye Cannot Reject The Hand (1 Corinthians 12:21)
One member must not consider another unnecessary.

c) Every Member Is Important (1 Corinthians 12:22)
Even less visible functions have great value.

d) Honour One Another (Romans 12:10)
We should respect and appreciate the contributions of others.

Biblical Example: Aaron and Hur supported Moses' hands during Israel's battle, demonstrating that different roles can contribute to the same victory (Exodus 17:10-12).

5. REJECT COMPARISON AND COMPETITION

God never intended spiritual gifts to become instruments of rivalry.

a) Do Not Think More Highly Of Yourself (Romans 12:3)
Giftedness should produce humility rather than superiority.

b) Do Not Envy Another's Gift (1 Corinthians 12:15-16)
Your different function does not make you less valuable.

c) Do Not Boast In Your Gift (1 Corinthians 4:7)
Everything we have received ultimately comes from God.

d) Let Love Govern Your Ministry (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
Even impressive gifts become unprofitable when exercised without love.

Biblical Example: The disciples argued about who was greatest, but Jesus taught them that greatness is demonstrated through humble service (Luke 22:24-27).

6. DEVELOP AND USE YOUR GIFT FAITHFULLY

A gift must be cultivated and exercised.

a) Stir Up The Gift (2 Timothy 1:6)
God's gift should not be neglected.

b) Be Diligent In Your Ministry (1 Timothy 4:14-15)
Spiritual gifts should be developed through disciplined practice.

c) Be A Faithful Steward (1 Peter 4:10)
We will give account for how we use what God has entrusted to us.

d) Remain Faithful In Little Things (Luke 16:10)
Faithfulness in small assignments prepares us for greater responsibility.

Biblical Example: Timothy was instructed to develop and faithfully exercise the gift he had received (1 Timothy 4:14-16).

7. LET LOVE UNITE THE GIFTS

The gifts function best when they are governed by love.

a) Love Is Greater Than Giftedness (1 Corinthians 13:1-2)
Spiritual ability without love loses its true value.

b) Love Does Not Seek Its Own (1 Corinthians 13:5)
Ministry should not be motivated by personal recognition.

c) Love Builds Up (1 Corinthians 8:1)
The purpose of ministry is to strengthen others.

d) Serve One Another In Love (Galatians 5:13)
Christian freedom should become an opportunity for service.

Biblical Example: The early church demonstrated love by caring for one another and sharing resources with those in need (Acts 4:32-35).

8. WORK TOGETHER AS ONE BODY

Different gifts must cooperate to fulfil God's purpose.

a) One Body, Many Members (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
Unity does not require uniformity.

b) Every Member Has A Place (1 Corinthians 12:18)
God Himself arranges members in the body according to His purpose.

c) When One Suffers, All Suffer (1 Corinthians 12:26)
The church should respond collectively to the needs of its members.

d) When One Is Honoured, All Rejoice (1 Corinthians 12:26)
The success of one member should become a reason for collective celebration.

Biblical Example: The early church worked together in teaching, prayer, evangelism, administration, generosity, and service to advance the Gospel (Acts 6:1-7).

CONCLUSION

The beauty of the church is not found in everyone doing the same thing but in different people serving the same Lord through the power of the same Spirit. There are diverse gifts, diverse ministries, and diverse operations, but there is one Holy Spirit who empowers them all. Diversity is therefore not a threat to unity; when properly understood, it becomes one of the greatest expressions of God's wisdom.

Let us therefore stop comparing gifts and start complementing one another. Do not despise another person's ministry because it differs from yours, and do not underestimate your own contribution because it seems less visible. Discover your gift, develop it, use it faithfully, and operate in love. Many gifts can function as one when the same Spirit is directing them.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for the diversity of spiritual gifts You have placed within the body of Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to recognise and appreciate the different gifts You have given to Your people, in Jesus name.

3. Father, reveal clearly the spiritual gifts and areas of grace You have entrusted to me, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, deliver me from comparison, jealousy, competition, and insecurity concerning spiritual gifts, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give me grace to develop and faithfully use every gift You have entrusted to me, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, teach me to use my gifts for the benefit and edification of others rather than for personal recognition, in Jesus name.

7. Father, let genuine love govern every spiritual gift and ministry operating in my life, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, establish unity among the members and ministries of Your church despite our different gifts and functions, in Jesus name.

9. Father, help every believer discover his or her place and function in the body of Christ, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, let the diverse gifts in Your church work together effectively to advance Your kingdom and glorify Your name, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall discover and understand the spiritual gifts God has placed within you.

2. You shall appreciate the gifts and ministries of others without comparison or jealousy.

3. Every gift and grace deposited in your life shall be awakened and developed.

4. You shall not compete with others; you shall faithfully fulfil your own divine assignment.

5. Your spiritual gifts shall become instruments of blessing and edification to many.

6. You shall operate in humility and never allow giftedness to produce pride.

7. Love shall govern your gifts, ministry, relationships, and service.

8. You shall work effectively with other members of the body of Christ.

9. Your contribution to God's kingdom shall become increasingly fruitful and impactful.

10. The same Holy Spirit shall unite His people, empower their gifts, and use them collectively to advance the Gospel and glorify Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.
