SERVANTS OF CHRIST

Description: Being a servant of Christ means living under His authority, faithfully carrying His message, serving others with humility, and remaining accountable to Him.

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is fundamentally a life of service. Paul instructs the Corinthians to regard him and other ministers as "servants of Christ" and "stewards of the mysteries of God". This description shifts attention away from human status and towards responsibility, reminding us that those who belong to Christ are called to serve His purposes.

A servant does not determine the master's assignment; the servant receives instructions and carries them out faithfully. In the same way, believers are not called to redesign God's message according to personal preferences. We are entrusted with the Gospel and expected to handle it faithfully, accurately, and responsibly.

Servanthood also requires humility. Jesus Himself demonstrated the highest example of servant leadership by coming not to be served but to serve. Therefore, every believer, whether serving publicly or quietly, is called to follow Christ's example, use his or her gifts faithfully, and seek the approval of the Master above the applause of people.

1. RECOGNISE THAT YOU BELONG TO CHRIST

Before we can serve Christ effectively, we must understand whose we are. Our identity in Christ determines the authority under which we live and serve.

a) You Are Bought With A Price (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Believers belong to Christ because He purchased them through His sacrifice. Our lives therefore belong to Him and should honour Him.

b) You Are Called To Serve (Galatians 5:13)
Christian freedom is not permission to live selfishly. We are called to use our freedom to serve one another in love.

c) You Are Under Christ's Authority (Matthew 28:18-20)
Jesus possesses all authority, and His servants are commissioned to carry His message into the world.

d) You Represent Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20)
Our words, conduct, and relationships should reflect the character and message of the One we represent.

Biblical Example: Paul described himself as a servant of Jesus Christ and devoted his entire life to the calling he had received from Him (Romans 1:1; Acts 26:19).

2. SERVE WITH HUMILITY

Christlike service is not motivated by a desire for position or recognition. Genuine servants are willing to humble themselves for the benefit of others.

a) Follow Christ's Example (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to death. His example establishes the standard for Christian servanthood.

b) Put Others First (Philippians 2:3-4)
Servants do not live entirely for personal interests. They consider the needs and welfare of others.

c) Reject Self-Exaltation (Luke 14:11)
God opposes pride and honours humility. A servant does not need to constantly promote himself or herself.

d) Serve Without Seeking Applause (Matthew 6:1-4)
God values service performed from a sincere heart, even when nobody publicly acknowledges it.

Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet, demonstrating that greatness in God's kingdom is expressed through humble service (John 13:3-15).

3. BE FAITHFUL WITH GOD'S MESSAGE

Paul described ministers as stewards of the mysteries of God. A steward is entrusted with something that belongs to another and must handle it faithfully.

a) Guard The Gospel (1 Timothy 6:20)
The Gospel is a sacred trust that must be preserved and communicated accurately.

b) Preach The Truth (2 Timothy 4:2)
God's servants must remain committed to proclaiming His Word faithfully, whether or not the message is popular.

c) Avoid Distorting Scripture (2 Corinthians 4:2)
We must reject manipulation, deception, and dishonest handling of God's Word.

d) Teach What Is Sound (Titus 2:1)
Christian teaching should promote sound doctrine and godly living rather than confusion or speculation.

Biblical Example: Ezra devoted himself to studying, practising, and teaching God's Law, demonstrating the proper pattern for handling divine truth (Ezra 7:10).

4. BE FAITHFUL IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Every servant has a responsibility. God does not require every believer to perform the same task, but He expects each person to be faithful with what has been entrusted to him or her.

a) Use Your Gifts (1 Peter 4:10)
God has given every believer gifts that should be used to serve others as faithful stewards of His grace.

b) Work Wholeheartedly (Colossians 3:23)
Our service should be offered with sincerity and diligence because we ultimately serve Christ.

c) Remain Steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Faithfulness requires persistence. We must continue serving even when circumstances become difficult.

d) Complete Your Assignment (2 Timothy 4:5)
Paul encouraged Timothy to fulfil his ministry completely. God's servants should pursue their assignments with determination.

Biblical Example: Timothy remained committed to Paul's instructions and continued serving the Church faithfully despite challenges and opposition (2 Timothy 1:13-14; 4:5).

5. LIVE FOR THE MASTER'S APPROVAL

The ultimate evaluation of a servant comes from the master. Christians must therefore be more concerned about God's approval than human opinions.

a) God Examines Faithfulness (1 Corinthians 4:2)
The essential requirement for a steward is faithfulness. God values reliability in those He entrusts with responsibility.

b) Do Not Live For Human Judgement (1 Corinthians 4:3-4)
Paul refused to allow human opinion to become the final authority over his ministry. God's judgement is ultimately what matters.

c) Remember Your Accountability (Romans 14:12)
Every believer will give an account of his or her life to God. This should encourage responsible and faithful service.

d) Look Forward To The Reward (Matthew 25:21)
Faithful servants will hear the Master's commendation and be entrusted with greater responsibility in God's kingdom.

Biblical Example: Joseph remained faithful in Potiphar's house and later in prison, serving responsibly even when his circumstances were difficult. God eventually elevated him to a position of great responsibility (Genesis 39:2-6, 21-23; 41:38-41).

CONCLUSION

To be called a servant of Christ is both a privilege and a responsibility. We belong to Him, represent Him, carry His message, serve His people, and remain accountable to Him. Our greatness is not measured by position, popularity, or recognition but by the faithfulness with which we fulfil what He has entrusted to us.

Therefore, serve Christ with humility, guard His truth, use your gifts faithfully, and remain committed to your assignment. Do not allow human applause or criticism to determine your devotion. Live for the Master's approval, because one day you will stand before Him and give an account of your stewardship.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for the privilege of belonging to Jesus Christ and serving Your kingdom, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, give me grace to live every day under the authority and lordship of Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

3. Father, deliver me from pride, self-promotion, selfish ambition, and every attitude that contradicts true servanthood, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, help me to serve others with humility, love, patience, compassion, and genuine concern, in Jesus name.

5. Father, help me to guard Your Word faithfully and give me wisdom to communicate the Gospel accurately and boldly, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me to recognise, develop, and faithfully use every gift and ability You have entrusted to me, in Jesus name.

7. Father, strengthen me to remain faithful in my assignment even when I face opposition, discouragement, delay, or lack of recognition, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, purify my motives so that I will serve for Your glory and not for human applause or personal advantage, in Jesus name.

9. Father, help me to live with the awareness that I will give an account of my stewardship before You, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, make me a faithful servant who will complete my assignment, honour Your name, and receive Your approval at the end of my journey, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall live consciously under the lordship of Jesus Christ, and every area of your life shall increasingly reflect your identity as His servant.

2. You shall receive grace to serve with humility, love, sincerity, patience, and a heart that seeks the good of others.

3. Pride, selfish ambition, competition, and the desire for human applause shall not control your service to God.

4. The Lord shall give you wisdom and boldness to guard His Word faithfully and communicate the Gospel accurately and effectively.

5. Your gifts and abilities shall be developed and used faithfully, and your service shall become a blessing to many people.

6. You shall remain steadfast in your God-given assignment even when you face opposition, delay, disappointment, or seasons of obscurity.

7. Your motives shall remain pure, and your greatest desire shall be to please Christ rather than to gain the approval of people.

8. The Lord shall strengthen you to complete every assignment He has entrusted to you, and you shall not abandon your calling before its fulfilment.

9. Your stewardship shall be found faithful before God, and your labour shall produce results that possess eternal value.

10. You shall finish your journey as a faithful servant of Christ, and you shall receive the joy of hearing your Master's approval and commendation.
