SOMETHING WORTH DESIRING

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Psalm 27:4
Supporting Texts: Matthew 6:33, Psalm 73:25-26, Isaiah 26:9, Philippians 3:10

INTRODUCTION:
Desires shape the course of our lives. King David, in Psalm 27:4, expressed his ultimate desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord, behold His beauty, and inquire in His temple. This scripture highlights what is truly worth desiring—God's presence and relationship with Him. While the world offers many distractions, believers are called to focus their desires on what brings eternal value.

1. DESIRING GOD’S PRESENCE

a) A longing to be with God
David’s primary desire was to dwell in the house of the Lord. This reflects a heart that values communion with God above all else (Psalm 16:11).

b) Intimacy with the Creator
Desiring God’s presence leads to a closer relationship with Him (James 4:8).

c) Prioritising God above all
We should seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

d) Fulfilment in God’s presence
In His presence is fullness of joy and eternal pleasures (Psalm 16:11).

Biblical Example: Moses’ desire to see God’s glory (Exodus 33:18-20).

2. BEHOLDING GOD’S BEAUTY

a) Reflecting on His glory
God's beauty is revealed through His creation and His character (Psalm 19:1).

b) Worshipping His majesty
True worship flows from an appreciation of God’s splendour (John 4:24).

c) Finding satisfaction in God
Those who seek God will lack nothing (Psalm 34:10).

d) Transformation by His beauty
Beholding God changes us into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Biblical Example: Isaiah’s vision of God’s glory in the temple (Isaiah 6:1-5).

3. INQUIRING IN GOD’S TEMPLE

a) Seeking divine guidance
Inquiring of God ensures we make Spirit-led decisions (Proverbs 3:5-6).

b) Gaining wisdom and understanding
God’s temple is a place of teaching and revelation (Psalm 119:105).

c) Strengthened through prayer
The temple is a house of prayer where believers connect with God (Matthew 21:13).

d) Drawing closer to God
Asking, seeking, and knocking open the door to divine insight (Matthew 7:7-8).

Biblical Example: Hannah inquiring of the Lord for a son (1 Samuel 1:9-20).

4. MAKING GOD YOUR ONE DESIRE

a) Recognising God as our ultimate treasure
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be (Matthew 6:21).

b) Redirecting misplaced desires
Lay aside worldly pursuits to focus on heavenly rewards (Colossians 3:2).

c) Cultivating a heart for God
Delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

d) Pursuing eternal value
Earthly things fade, but God remains forever (1 John 2:17).

Biblical Example: Paul’s desire to know Christ and the power of His resurrection (Philippians 3:10).

CONCLUSION:
In a world full of fleeting desires, choosing to desire God above all else is the wisest decision we can make. David’s longing for God’s presence, beauty, and wisdom sets a powerful example for every believer. May our hearts be set on Him, and may we find fulfilment in His eternal presence.
