LIVING ABOVE FEAR
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: 2 Timothy 1:7
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 41:10; Romans 8:15; 1 John 4:18
INTRODUCTION:
Fear is one of the most powerful weapons the enemy uses to paralyze believers and hinder them from walking in their God-given purpose. Fear comes in various forms, including fear of the unknown, failure, and even fear of people. However, the Bible reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Living above fear is possible when we trust in God's promises, understanding that He has already given us victory over fear through Christ Jesus.
1. GOD HAS NOT GIVEN US THE SPIRIT OF FEAR
a) Fear is not from God
The spirit of fear comes from the enemy, and it is a tool to stop believers from fulfilling their destiny. God’s word assures us that fear is not part of our inheritance in Christ.
b) The Holy Spirit empowers us
The Holy Spirit, given to every believer, enables us to live boldly and confidently, overcoming the grip of fear.
c) We have power over fear
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are equipped to stand firm and resist fear in every circumstance.
d) Fear cannot hold us captive
As children of God, we have authority over all forms of fear because Christ has already given us victory.
Biblical Example:
David’s confrontation with Goliath (1 Samuel 17) serves as a powerful example. Despite the fear surrounding him, David stood firm in the power of God, defeating the giant and demonstrating that fear cannot overcome those who trust in God.
2. THE LOVE OF GOD CASTS OUT FEAR
a) Perfect love drives out fear
The Bible teaches us that God's perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). When we understand the depth of God’s love for us, fear loses its power.
b) Love as the foundation of faith
Fear is often rooted in insecurity or doubt, but God's love reassures us that He is with us in every situation, and nothing can separate us from His love.
c) We are secure in God’s love
Knowing that God’s love is unconditional and eternal allows us to step out in faith and trust that He will always care for us.
d) Faith grows through God’s love
The more we experience God’s love, the more our faith increases, and the less room there is for fear to take root.
Biblical Example:
The woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25-34) experienced the healing power of Jesus because she believed in His love for her. Her faith in His love overcame the fear of rejection and failure.
3. WE ARE CALLED TO LIVE BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT
a) Faith triumphs over fear
Faith is the antidote to fear. When we focus on the promises of God rather than our circumstances, fear cannot take hold.
b) Walking by faith brings victory
Every challenge we face is an opportunity to walk by faith and demonstrate that we trust God above all else.
c) Fear is based on what we see, faith is based on what we believe
Fear often arises from the limitations we perceive in the natural realm, but faith is anchored in the supernatural power of God.
d) We are more than conquerors
Through Christ, we are equipped to conquer every fear that comes our way.
Biblical Example:
Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33) exemplifies how stepping out in faith, despite fear, leads to divine victory. Though he initially feared, his faith in Jesus empowered him to overcome fear and walk on water.
4. FEAR HAS NO PLACE IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER
a) Fear is a liar
Fear often exaggerates threats and creates false narratives. As believers, we must recognize that fear is a lie, and it has no power over us.
b) We are more powerful than our fears
With God on our side, we are more than capable of overcoming any fear that tries to rise up against us.
c) Jesus gives us peace in the midst of fear
In every fearful situation, Jesus offers peace that surpasses understanding, helping us stay calm and confident.
d) We are equipped for victory
God has already equipped us with everything we need to walk in victory over fear. Our faith in His word empowers us to stand strong.
Biblical Example:
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3) refused to bow to fear, choosing to trust God even when faced with a fiery furnace. Their courage and faith resulted in divine deliverance.
CONCLUSION:
Living above fear is not only possible but essential for the believer. As we trust in God’s love, walk by faith, and stand firm in His promises, fear loses its hold on us. Let us remember that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. We can rise above every fear, knowing that in Christ, we are more than conquerors.
