THE DANGERS OF DISTRACTION DURING CHURCH SERVICES

Title: DANGERS OF DISTRACTION DURING CHURCH SERVICES

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Hebrews 12:1-2
Supporting Texts: Colossians 3:2, 1 Corinthians 14:40, Matthew 6:33

INTRODUCTION
In today’s world, distractions are rampant, and they can significantly impact our worship experience. During church service, it’s vital to focus our hearts and minds on God. This sermon will address the various distractions that can hinder our spiritual growth and worship, emphasizing the need for intentionality in our church gatherings.

1. DISTRACTION OF TECHNOLOGY

a) Mobile Phones and Devices
Using handsets to play games, scroll social media, or text during service can divert our attention from God’s Word. While technology can be a tool for good, it can also become a significant distraction.

b) Over-reliance on Digital Resources
Relying solely on digital devices for Bible verses or sermon notes can lead to disengagement. When our focus shifts to the device rather than the message, we miss the opportunity for spiritual nourishment.

Biblical Example: Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42)
Martha was distracted by serving while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, listening. Jesus pointed out that Mary chose the better part, illustrating the importance of focusing on Him over distractions.

2. DISTRACTION OF CONVERSATIONS

a) Talking During Service
Engaging in conversations with friends during the service can be disruptive. While fellowship is essential, it should not take precedence over worship and listening to God’s Word.

b) Gossip and Side Chats
Gossiping or discussing irrelevant matters can lead to a loss of focus on the message being delivered, hindering the spiritual atmosphere of the service.

Biblical Example: The Early Church (Acts 2:42)
The early believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship. Their focus was on growing together in faith, not allowing distractions to disrupt their unity and worship.

3. DISTRACTION OF ENVIRONMENT

a) External Noise
Outside distractions, such as traffic noise, construction, or other activities, can pull our attention away from worship. While we cannot control these factors entirely, we can choose to focus on God amidst the noise.

b) Movement and Activity
People moving in and out during service can also be distracting. It’s essential to maintain a reverent atmosphere conducive to worship and learning.

Biblical Example:  Jesus Teaching in the Temple (Luke 19:45-48)
Jesus cleared the temple of distractions, emphasizing the need for a focused environment for worship. He understood the importance of a sacred space free from distractions.

4. DISTRACTION OF PERSONAL CONCERNS

a) Worries and Anxieties
Entering service with personal concerns or worries can cloud our ability to engage with God. Matthew 6:33 reminds us to seek first the Kingdom of God. When we focus on Him, our worries fade.

b) Unresolved Issues
Carrying unresolved conflicts or burdens into the service can distract us from the message. It’s essential to lay these at God’s feet, allowing Him to minister to us during worship.

Biblical Example: The Woman with the Issue of Blood (Mark 5:25-34)
Despite her distractions and challenges, she pressed through to touch Jesus. Her determination highlights the importance of focusing on Christ despite personal struggles.

5. DISTRACTION OF SPIRITUAL APATHY

a) Lack of Expectation
Approaching service without expectation can lead to a disengaged mindset. If we come to church merely out of routine, we may miss the blessings God has for us.

b) Complacency
Complacency in our spiritual lives can cause us to overlook the significance of worship. We must cultivate a heart that is eager to receive and respond to God’s Word.

Biblical Example: The Church in Laodicea (Revelation 3:15-17)
This church was lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. Jesus called them to wake up and be fervent in their faith, highlighting the danger of spiritual apathy.

CONCLUSION
Distractions during church service can significantly hinder our worship and spiritual growth. It’s essential to be mindful of these distractions and take intentional steps to focus on God. By being aware of technology, conversations, environmental factors, personal concerns, and spiritual apathy, we can create an atmosphere conducive to worship and transformation.
