Title: THE STAR OF HOPE (Part 1)
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Matthew 2:1-2
Supporting Texts: Numbers 24:17, Revelation 22:16
INTRODUCTION:
The star that guided the wise men to Bethlehem symbolises hope, direction, and the fulfilment of God’s promises. It was not an ordinary celestial body but a divine signal announcing the birth of Jesus, the Saviour of the world. This star represents Christ, the true light and our eternal hope. As believers, the star reminds us of God’s unfailing guidance and the assurance of His promises.
1. THE PROPHECY OF THE STAR
a) A Promise Foretold:
Numbers 24:17 prophesied the coming of a star out of Jacob, a ruler for Israel.
b) A Symbol of Messiahship:
The star signified the arrival of the long-awaited King and Redeemer (Matthew 2:2).
c) A Beacon of Hope:
For centuries, the prophecy gave hope to those awaiting the Messiah.
d) God’s Sovereignty in Fulfilment:
The appearance of the star fulfilled ancient prophecies, affirming God’s faithfulness.
e) Biblical Example:
Isaiah’s prophecy of the virgin birth was fulfilled in Christ, showing God’s precise timing (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:22-23).
2. THE GUIDANCE OF THE STAR
a) God Leads His People:
The star directed the wise men to the exact location of Jesus (Matthew 2:9).
b) Faith Requires Action:
The wise men followed the star with faith and perseverance, even in unfamiliar territory.
c) God’s Guidance Brings Clarity:
The star illuminated their path and ensured they didn’t lose their way.
d) Divine Direction is Unmistakable:
When God leads, His direction is clear and undeniable (Isaiah 30:21).
e) Biblical Example:
The pillar of cloud and fire guided the Israelites through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21).
3. THE WORSHIP INSPIRED BY THE STAR
a) Revealing the King of Kings:
The star led the wise men to worship Jesus, acknowledging His kingship (Matthew 2:11).
b) Worship as a Response to Revelation:
True worship is birthed from a divine encounter.
c) An Offering of Value:
The wise men offered gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolising honour, worship, and sacrifice.
d) Submission to God’s Plan:
The wise men’s journey was an act of humility and obedience to God.
e) Biblical Example:
The woman with the alabaster jar worshipped Jesus with her most valuable possession (Mark 14:3-9).
4. LESSONS FROM THE STAR OF HOPE
a) Christ is the Ultimate Star of Hope:
Jesus is the fulfilment of every promise, the light of the world (John 8:12).
b) Hope in God Never Disappoints:
Just as the star led to the Saviour, hope in God leads to eternal life (Romans 5:5).
c) God’s Plan is Unfolding:
The appearance of the star shows that God’s promises are always fulfilled in His time.
d) Follow God’s Guidance:
Like the wise men, we must follow God’s leading, no matter the cost.
e) Biblical Example:
Simeon held on to the hope of seeing the Messiah and rejoiced when the promise was fulfilled (Luke 2:25-30).
5. THE LIGHT OF CHRIST: OUR ETERNAL HOPE
a) The Bright Morning Star:
Jesus is referred to as the Bright Morning Star, bringing eternal hope to all believers (Revelation 22:16).
b) Dispelling Darkness:
The light of Christ overcomes all forms of darkness in our lives (John 1:5).
c) An Everlasting Guide:
His light leads us through life’s uncertainties, giving us hope and direction.
d) A Call to Reflect His Light:
As believers, we are called to shine His light and bring hope to others (Matthew 5:14-16).
e) Biblical Example:
The star led the wise men to Jesus, who brought joy and salvation to the world (Matthew 2:10-11).
CONCLUSION:
The Star of Hope points us to Jesus, the source of light, life, and salvation. Just as the wise men followed the star to find the Messiah, we must look to Christ for guidance, hope, and fulfilment. He is the Bright Morning Star who dispels darkness and brings eternal hope to all who believe in Him.
