Description: Good followership brings divine favour, growth, and access to blessings that position a believer for greater leadership and impact.
INTRODUCTION:
In God’s kingdom, followership is a foundational principle for growth and elevation. Many desire to lead, but few understand the power and blessings of being a faithful follower. A good follower honours authority, learns diligently, and serves faithfully.
Being a good follower is not weakness but wisdom. It allows God to train, refine, and prepare you for greater responsibilities. Every great leader in Scripture—whether Joseph, Joshua, or Elisha—was first a faithful follower before stepping into their divine assignments.
The benefits of good followership include spiritual covering, wisdom for life’s journey, access to mentorship blessings, and the development of godly character. As you follow faithfully, God positions you for elevation and influence.
1. GOOD FOLLOWERS RECEIVE DIVINE COVERING AND PROTECTION
Following godly leaders provides spiritual oversight and shielding.
a) Spiritual authority brings protection (Hebrews 13:17)
Submitting to God-ordained authority shields you from spiritual attacks and errors.
b) Obedience prevents unnecessary battles (Numbers 12:1-10)
Those who rebel against authority expose themselves to danger.
c) God honours the covering of leaders (1 Samuel 24:6)
David refused to harm Saul because he understood spiritual authority.
d) Following God’s order brings peace (Philippians 4:9)
Following faithfully brings stability and divine peace.
Biblical Example: Ruth followed Naomi and found protection, provision, and destiny alignment through Boaz (Ruth 2:2-3).
2. GOOD FOLLOWERS GAIN WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING
Faithful followership exposes you to knowledge and life-changing guidance.
a) Learning from experience (Proverbs 13:20)
Walking with the wise imparts wisdom and understanding.
b) Observation develops discernment (Proverbs 22:17-19)
A follower gains insight by watching and learning.
c) Mentorship builds character (Proverbs 4:1-2)
Receiving instruction shapes godly behaviour and choices.
d) Humility opens doors for wisdom (Philippians 2:5-8)
Christ humbled Himself, showing us the way to grow through obedience.
Biblical Example: Joshua gained wisdom and courage by faithfully following Moses, which prepared him to lead Israel (Exodus 24:13).
3. GOOD FOLLOWERS ACCESS BLESSINGS AND FAVOUR
God rewards those who follow faithfully.
a) Obedience attracts favour (Isaiah 1:19)
Willing obedience leads to abundance and blessing.
b) Serving faithfully brings promotion (Luke 16:10-12)
Faithfulness in little leads to greater responsibility.
c) Honour releases blessings (Malachi 1:6)
Honouring your leaders attracts divine favour.
d) God rewards loyalty (Ruth 1:16-17)
Ruth’s loyalty brought generational blessings through the lineage of Jesus.
Biblical Example: Elisha followed Elijah faithfully and received a double portion of his anointing (2 Kings 2:9-10).
4. GOOD FOLLOWERS DEVELOP GODLY CHARACTER AND HUMILITY
Following well shapes your heart and attitude.
a) Service cultivates humility (Mark 10:43-45)
True greatness begins with serving others.
b) Patience is built through followership (James 1:4)
Faithful following teaches endurance and perseverance.
c) Correction refines character (Proverbs 12:1)
Accepting correction prepares you for leadership.
d) Submission honours God’s order (Romans 13:1)
Submission to authority aligns you with God’s purposes.
Biblical Example: Timothy’s godly character was shaped under Paul’s mentorship, preparing him for effective ministry (Philippians 2:22).
5. GOOD FOLLOWERS ARE POSITIONED FOR LEADERSHIP AND GREATER IMPACT
Faithful following prepares you for greater assignments.
a) Leadership begins with followership (1 Corinthians 11:1)
You cannot lead well until you have followed well.
b) Faithfulness brings promotion (Luke 19:17)
God elevates those who are faithful in little.
c) God tests hearts through service (Matthew 25:21)
Your attitude in following reveals your readiness for greater things.
d) Followership multiplies influence (2 Timothy 2:2)
Leaders reproduce what they have learned through following.
Biblical Example: Joseph served faithfully in Potiphar’s house and prison before becoming ruler in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-41).
