Description: Divine preservation is the supernatural act of God keeping His children safe from danger, destruction, and eternal ruin.
INTRODUCTION:
The God we serve is not only a Deliverer but also a Preserver. He does not merely save us once and leave us to fend for ourselves; rather, He continually sustains, protects, and shields us from all forms of harm. Divine preservation is one of the greatest assurances we have as children of God, because it reminds us that our lives are not left at the mercy of circumstances, enemies, or accidents.
To preserve means to keep, guard, sustain, or maintain something in its original state without corruption or destruction. Spiritually, divine preservation refers to God’s power to protect His people from spiritual decay, physical harm, emotional collapse, and eternal damnation. It means that the God who created us also keeps us until His purpose in our lives is fully accomplished.
In times of great uncertainty—when the world is filled with dangers, evil plots, and unseen attacks—believers can rest in the promise of divine preservation. The Bible is filled with assurances that God will preserve us from evil, shield us in trouble, and uphold us until the day of Christ. Let us therefore consider the dimensions of this divine preservation, and how God ensures that His children are kept safe and secure.
1. GOD PRESERVES THE BODY FROM DESTRUCTION
Divine preservation covers the physical body, ensuring that we are protected from sickness, premature death, and physical harm. God shields His people from arrows, pestilence, and accidents that seek to end their lives.
a) Protection from Sickness (Exodus 15:26): God declared Himself as the Healer of His people, preserving them from diseases that afflict the world. The power of divine preservation keeps the body whole.
b) Deliverance from Premature Death (Psalm 118:17): The enemy often plots untimely death, but God preserves His children until their appointed time is fulfilled.
c) Safety from Harm and Accidents (Psalm 91:10-12): The angels of God are assigned to keep watch, ensuring that no evil befalls the believer.
d) Preservation in Times of Danger (Isaiah 43:2): Even in fire or flood, the Lord’s preserving hand ensures that destruction does not consume His own.
Biblical Example: The children of Israel were preserved physically during the plagues of Egypt, as none of the afflictions that struck the Egyptians touched them (Exodus 8:22-23).
2. GOD PRESERVES THE SOUL FROM CORRUPTION
The soul—the seat of will, mind, and emotions—is constantly under attack from sin and worldly influence. Divine preservation keeps the soul from corruption, compromise, and backsliding.
a) Preservation from Sinful Pollution (Psalm 121:7): God not only keeps us from outward danger but preserves our inner man from being defiled by sin.
b) Victory over Temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13): Through His faithfulness, God preserves us by providing a way of escape from every temptation.
c) Renewing the Mind (Romans 12:2): Preservation of the soul involves the ongoing transformation of the mind by God’s Word, preventing conformity to the world.
d) Guarding the Emotions (Philippians 4:7): God’s peace keeps our hearts and minds intact, preserving us from emotional breakdown and anxiety.
Biblical Example: Joseph’s soul was preserved in Egypt when he refused to yield to the temptation of Potiphar’s wife, maintaining his purity in a corrupt environment (Genesis 39:7-12).
3. GOD PRESERVES THE SPIRIT UNTO ETERNAL LIFE
The highest dimension of preservation is the eternal security of the believer’s spirit. The enemy may try to destroy the body and corrupt the soul, but God ensures that those who belong to Him are preserved unto eternal life.
a) Kept by God’s Power (1 Peter 1:5): Believers are preserved through faith, shielded by the power of God until the coming of salvation.
b) Sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30): The Spirit of God preserves our spirit until the day of redemption.
c) Assurance of Eternal Security (John 10:28-29): Jesus promised that none can snatch us out of His hand, ensuring preservation unto eternity.
d) Preservation from Falling (Jude 1:24): God is able to keep us from falling and present us faultless before His throne.
Biblical Example: The thief on the cross experienced divine preservation of his spirit when Jesus assured him of eternal life in Paradise (Luke 23:43).
4. GOD PRESERVES HIS PURPOSE IN OUR LIVES
Divine preservation is not just about keeping us alive but ensuring that God’s will is accomplished in us. He sustains us so that His promises and assignments are fulfilled.
a) Preservation of Destiny (Jeremiah 29:11): God preserves us so His plans for our future can come to pass.
b) Preservation in the Midst of Enemies (Psalm 23:5): Even when surrounded by adversaries, God keeps His purpose alive in us.
c) Sustenance for Kingdom Assignment (Acts 18:9-10): God reassured Paul of preservation in Corinth because there was a divine assignment to accomplish there.
d) Preservation for Generational Impact (Genesis 45:7): God sometimes preserves a person not just for themselves but for the survival and blessing of others.
Biblical Example: Joseph told his brothers that God preserved him in Egypt to save lives during the famine, ensuring the fulfilment of divine purpose (Genesis 45:5-7).
CONCLUSION:
Divine preservation is a reality every believer must embrace. It is God’s promise that covers our bodies, souls, spirits, and destinies. No matter the storms, dangers, or attacks of the enemy, the Lord has committed Himself to preserve His children until His purpose in them is accomplished.
As believers, our role is to trust in His promises, walk in obedience, and remain under the covering of His presence. When we do, we can boldly declare that no weapon formed against us shall prosper, and that the Lord who preserves Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
