Description: Divine exemption is guaranteed to those who are in covenant relationship with God, for His covenant is sure, unbreakable, and everlasting.
INTRODUCTION:
God is a God of covenant, and He deals with His people on the basis of covenant. From Abraham to Israel, from David to the New Testament church, exemption has always been tied to the covenant promises of God. When you walk in covenant with Him, you carry His mark, His promises, and His covering that separates you from the calamities and destructions that afflict others.
Exemption by covenant means that no matter what is happening around you, there is a divine seal upon your life that secures you from destruction. The covenant is not just an agreement; it is a binding relationship sealed by God Himself. This covenant makes God obligated, by His integrity, to protect, preserve, and provide for His own.
As believers in Christ, we are partakers of the covenant blessings of Abraham through the blood of Jesus Christ. That covenant places us in a position where we are exempted from evil, destruction, and judgement. Understanding this truth enables us to walk in confidence and boldness, knowing that no weapon formed against us shall prosper because of the covenant that speaks over our lives.
1. THE COVENANT IS GOD’S GUARANTEE OF EXEMPTION
The covenant of God is not man-made but divinely established, making it unbreakable and reliable. It is God’s legal framework that ensures the safety and exemption of His people.
a) Divine Establishment (Genesis 17:7)
God establishes His covenant as an everlasting covenant, ensuring continuity across generations. This covenant is a divine guarantee of His presence and protection.
b) Unbreakable Nature (Psalm 89:34)
God declares that He will not break His covenant nor alter the words that proceed from His mouth. Unlike human promises, God’s covenant is unchanging.
c) Generational Security (Deuteronomy 7:9)
The covenant is not just for one person but extends to generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
d) Covenant as a Shield (Exodus 12:23)
During the Passover, the blood upon the doorposts served as a covenant mark of exemption. While Egypt mourned, Israel was preserved.
Biblical Example: Abraham walked under covenant, and despite famine, wars, and threats, he was exempted and prospered greatly (Genesis 12:10; Genesis 13:2).
2. THE BLOOD OF JESUS SEALS THE COVENANT OF EXEMPTION
The new covenant, established by the blood of Jesus, guarantees believers victory and exemption from destruction.
a) Covenant in the Blood (Luke 22:20)
Jesus declared the cup of His blood as the seal of the new covenant, assuring believers of eternal exemption from condemnation.
b) Exemption from Wrath (Romans 5:9)
By the blood, we are justified and exempted from the wrath that will come upon the world.
c) Blood as a Mark (Hebrews 12:24)
The blood of Jesus speaks better things than the blood of Abel, securing exemption for the children of God.
d) Victory Through the Blood (Revelation 12:11)
By the blood of the Lamb, believers overcome the enemy and remain exempted from his schemes.
Biblical Example: The children of Israel in Egypt were exempted from death by the blood on their doorposts (Exodus 12:23).
3. COVENANT PEOPLE ENJOY DIVINE PRESERVATION
Those in covenant with God are preserved by His promises, no matter the prevailing circumstances around them.
a) Preservation in Famine (Genesis 26:12-14)
Isaac sowed in famine and reaped a hundredfold because of the covenant blessing of Abraham.
b) Safety in Danger (Psalm 105:14-15)
God rebuked kings for the sake of His covenant people, saying, “Touch not mine anointed.”
c) Peace Amidst Trouble (Isaiah 54:10)
Though mountains may depart, His covenant of peace will not be removed.
d) Unshakable Assurance (Hebrews 6:17-18)
God confirmed His covenant with an oath, making it impossible for Him to lie, giving us strong consolation.
Biblical Example: David was preserved from Saul’s attempts to kill him because of the covenant promise of kingship upon his life (1 Samuel 18-24).
4. BELIEVERS MUST WALK IN COVENANT OBEDIENCE
The blessings of exemption are guaranteed when we obey and keep covenant terms with God.
a) Obedience Brings Blessing (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)
When we obey God’s covenant, His blessings overtake us and preserve us from curses.
b) Disobedience Brings Exposure (Jeremiah 11:10-11)
When people broke the covenant, they lost divine exemption and faced calamity.
c) Faith Activates Covenant (Galatians 3:29)
Those who belong to Christ are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the covenant promise.
d) Holiness Secures Covenant (2 Corinthians 6:17-18)
Walking in holiness ensures that God remains our Father and we His exempted children.
Biblical Example: Noah was exempted from the flood because of his obedience and righteousness in covenant with God (Genesis 6:18; 7:1).
CONCLUSION
Exemption by covenant is God’s way of marking His people out for safety, preservation, and blessing. His covenant cannot fail because it is rooted in His faithfulness and sealed by the blood of Jesus. Every believer who stands on this covenant enjoys divine security that no evil can penetrate.
However, the blessings of the covenant require that we walk in obedience, faith, and holiness. Just as Israel was exempted in Goshen, and just as the blood exempted them during the Passover, so also believers today are shielded from destruction when they live under the covering of the covenant.
