INTRODUCTION:
Sanctuary cleaners play a vital role in ensuring that the house of God is clean, presentable, and conducive for worship. Their service reflects reverence for God’s presence and contributes to creating an atmosphere of orderliness and holiness. This study highlights the responsibilities, spiritual importance, and benefits of the ministry of sanctuary cleaners.

1. MAINTAINING THE PHYSICAL SANCTUARY

The sanctuary is a sacred place where believers meet to worship God.

a) Keeping the sanctuary clean: Cleanliness reflects reverence for God (Exodus 40:32).

b) Ensuring the sanctuary is organised: Arrange chairs, instruments, and materials properly (1 Corinthians 14:40).

c) Regular maintenance: Repair damages and maintain a functional worship environment (Haggai 1:8).

d) Decorating for special occasions: Prepare the sanctuary for events like Christmas, Easter, or anniversaries (Exodus 35:35).

e) Biblical Example: The Levites were responsible for maintaining the temple’s physical aspects (Numbers 3:6-8).

2. CREATING A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE FOR WORSHIP

Sanctuary cleaners help create a conducive environment for God’s presence and people.

a) Eliminating distractions: Ensure the space is free from dirt and unpleasant odours (Psalm 24:3-4).

b) Promoting focus in worship: A clean environment helps members focus on God (Isaiah 6:1).

c) Upholding a standard of excellence: Reflect God’s excellence in cleanliness (Daniel 6:3).

d) Contributing to hospitality: Ensure visitors feel welcomed and comfortable (Romans 12:13).

e) Biblical Example: King Hezekiah ordered the temple to be cleansed to prepare for worship (2 Chronicles 29:15-16).

3. EXPRESSING LOVE AND REVERENCE FOR GOD

Cleaning the sanctuary is an act of worship and honour to God.

a) Serving with humility: Follow Christ’s example of humble service (John 13:14-15).

b) Demonstrating love for God’s house: Take pride in maintaining God’s sanctuary (Psalm 69:9).

c) Offering sacrificial service: Dedicate time and effort to the Lord’s work (Romans 12:1).

d) Being faithful in small duties: God rewards faithfulness in any task (Luke 16:10).

e) Biblical Example: The Israelites carefully maintained the tabernacle under Moses’ leadership (Exodus 39:42-43).

4. SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THEIR WORK

Sanctuary cleaning is not just physical but also spiritual.

a) Preparing for God’s presence: A clean place symbolises readiness for divine visitation (Leviticus 24:2-4).

b) Demonstrating holiness: Reflect God’s call to be clean and pure (Leviticus 11:44).

c) Ministering unto the Lord: Consider their role as sacred service (Colossians 3:23).

d) Inspiring others to serve: Encourage others through diligent service (Hebrews 10:24).

e) Biblical Example: Jesus cleansed the temple to restore its sacredness (John 2:14-16).

5. REWARDS FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE

Faithful sanctuary cleaners enjoy both earthly and eternal rewards.

a) Spiritual blessings: Experience God’s favour and presence (Psalm 92:12-13).

b) A sense of fulfilment: Gain satisfaction from serving in God’s house (1 Corinthians 15:58).

c) Eternal rewards: God honours those who serve faithfully (Matthew 25:21).

d) Increased spiritual growth: Serving fosters humility and faithfulness (John 12:26).

e) Biblical Example: Obed-Edom was blessed for caring for the ark of the covenant (2 Samuel 6:11).

CONCLUSION:
The ministry of sanctuary cleaners is significant in God’s house. By maintaining a clean and orderly environment, they honour God, facilitate worship, and inspire others to serve. Their work, though often unnoticed, is valued both by the church and by God. Let us support and appreciate this vital ministry while striving for excellence in all aspects of service to God.
