Title: NEVERTHELESS, AT THY WORD...
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Luke 5:5
Supporting Texts: John 2:5, Matthew 8:8, Mark 4:39, 1 Samuel 3:10
INTRODUCTION:
In life, there are times when we encounter moments of doubt, frustration, or confusion. We might be standing at the edge of impossibility, having tried everything without success. Yet, in those critical moments, God’s word can make all the difference. The phrase, "Nevertheless, at Thy word..." exemplifies the power of obedience to God's instructions, even when everything seems contrary. It reminds us that, despite our own understanding or circumstances, God's word has the power to transform situations, bring breakthroughs, and accomplish the impossible.
1. THE POWER OF OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WORD
a) Obedience Unlocks Divine Intervention
In Luke 5:5, Peter had toiled all night without catching any fish. Despite his professional expertise, he was ready to give up. However, when Jesus spoke, Peter obeyed, and his obedience led to a miraculous catch. God's word is never empty; it carries the power to bring about change.
b) Obedience Aligns Us with God’s Will
By obeying God's word, we align ourselves with His will and purpose. When we act on His instructions, we step into the flow of divine timing and favor.
c) The Word of God is a Sure Foundation
God's word is not fickle or uncertain. It is solid and reliable. Just like the disciples' obedience to Jesus’ command, when we follow His word, we find stability even in the midst of uncertainty.
d) Miracles Are Triggered by Obedience
The act of following God's word often results in miracles, as it did in Peter's case. A simple instruction led to a supernatural outcome.
e) Biblical Example: Mary, the mother of Jesus, instructed the servants at the wedding in Cana, "Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it." This simple act of obedience brought forth a miracle (John 2:5).
2. THE IMPOSSIBLE BECOMES POSSIBLE AT GOD'S WORD
a) The Power of God’s Word to Change Situations
When God speaks, He changes the very essence of a situation. What seems impossible to human understanding becomes possible when we trust in His word.
b) The Authority of God’s Word Over Nature
In Matthew 8:8, the centurion understood that Jesus’ word had authority over all things, including sickness and nature. Jesus' word could heal from a distance, as His power knows no boundaries.
c) The Word of God Stills the Storms
In Mark 4:39, Jesus calmed the storm with just a word. His word carries the authority to still the storms in our lives, whether they are external challenges or internal turmoil.
d) No Situation is Too Hard for God’s Word
God's word has the power to transform every circumstance. It brings life, direction, and clarity to the most challenging situations we face.
e) Biblical Example: The resurrection of Lazarus (John 11:43-44) demonstrates how God’s word has the power to call life into dead situations. When Jesus called Lazarus from the grave, the word of God reversed death and brought forth life.
3. THE CALL TO TRUST GOD’S TIMING AND PLAN
a) Trusting in God’s Perfect Timing
We often want solutions immediately, but God’s timing is perfect. The phrase “Nevertheless, at Thy word…” teaches us to trust God’s timing even when it doesn’t align with our own understanding or expectations.
b) God’s Word Brings Clarity in Confusion
When we are in confusion, God’s word offers clear direction. Just as God spoke to Samuel in 1 Samuel 3:10, His word can give us clarity and guidance in moments of uncertainty.
c) Delayed Answers Are Not Denied Answers
Sometimes, we may wait longer than expected for answers, but God’s word is still working behind the scenes. Trusting God’s word means waiting patiently for His perfect solution.
d) Faith and Obedience Go Hand in Hand
When we believe God's word, we are compelled to obey, even when the path ahead seems unclear. Our faith in God’s word fuels our obedience, which then triggers His response.
e) Biblical Example: Abraham’s obedience to God's promise of a child at an old age (Genesis 21:1-2) demonstrates that trusting God's timing results in His perfect fulfillment of promises.
4. GOD'S WORD BRINGS RESTORATION AND REWARD
a) From Lack to Abundance
Peter’s experience on the boat shows how obedience to God’s word brought a turnaround from lack to abundance. At the word of Jesus, what was once empty became full.
b) God’s Word Restores What Was Lost
Sometimes, we feel like we have lost everything, but God’s word can restore what was lost. When God speaks, He brings restoration and transformation.
c) Reward Follows Obedience
Obeying God’s word may require sacrifice, but it always brings a reward. The abundance that followed Peter’s obedience was far beyond his expectations.
d) God’s Word Frees Us from Limitation
God’s word has the power to break every limitation. When we trust and act on His word, we step into realms of possibilities that were once inaccessible to us.
e) Biblical Example: The restoration of Job (Job 42:10) came after he trusted in God's word and plan. His obedience and faith were rewarded with twice as much as he had before his trials.
5. THE IMPORTANCE OF ALIGNING WITH GOD’S WORD
a) God’s Word Is the Blueprint for Success
To succeed in life, we must follow the blueprint that God has set forth in His word. Aligning with His commands and instructions brings about divine success.
b) The Word of God as a Lamp to Our Feet
God’s word is a guiding light. It helps us make decisions, navigate challenges, and understand His will for our lives.
c) The Word of God Strengthens Our Faith
Our faith is strengthened when we understand and obey God's word. It encourages us to trust in His power and promises, even when we face difficult circumstances.
d) Aligning with God’s Word Leads to Fruitfulness
Just as the seed that is sown in fertile soil produces a bountiful harvest, God's word brings fruitfulness into our lives when we align with it.
e) Biblical Example: The parable of the sower (Matthew 13:23) demonstrates that those who receive God’s word and align with it bear much fruit, producing a life of abundance and blessing.
CONCLUSION:
"Nevertheless, at Thy word..." is a powerful declaration of faith and obedience. It reminds us that no matter how dire the situation, God’s word holds the power to change our lives. When we align our will with God’s word, miracles happen, obstacles are overcome, and the impossible becomes possible. Let us, like Peter, trust and obey God's instructions, knowing that His word never returns void, but accomplishes the purpose for which it was sent.
