By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Psalm 34:17-19
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 59:19, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 1 Samuel 30:6-8.
INTRODUCTION:
Life often brings us to moments when defeat seems inevitable. These are times of great distress, despair, or opposition. However, as believers, we serve a God who rescues His people, even at the last moment. God delights in turning the tide when the enemy thinks he has won. This message teaches us to trust God’s ability to deliver us from the edge of defeat and restore victory in every area of our lives.
1. THE REALITY OF THE EDGE OF DEFEAT
a) Moments of Weakness
There are times when strength fails and hope seems distant (Psalm 73:26).
b) Facing Overwhelming Opposition
Challenges sometimes come in waves, leaving us feeling cornered (Isaiah 59:19).
c) Delays and Disappointments
Prolonged trials can bring us to the brink of giving up (Habakkuk 2:3).
d) The Lies of the Enemy
Satan exploits moments of weakness to whisper defeat and despair (John 10:10).
e) Biblical Example: Elijah, after the Mount Carmel victory, felt defeated and prayed to die (1 Kings 19:4).
2. GOD’S PROMISE TO RESCUE HIS PEOPLE
a) The Lord is Our Deliverer
He hears the cries of the righteous and rescues them (Psalm 34:17).
b) God Specialises in the Impossible
He turns hopeless situations into testimonies (Luke 1:37).
c) His Power is Made Perfect in Weakness
God’s strength is revealed when we are at our lowest (2 Corinthians 12:9).
d) His Presence Brings Assurance
God promises never to leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
e) Biblical Example: At the Red Sea, God rescued Israel from Pharaoh’s army, showing His power (Exodus 14:13-14).
3. KEYS TO EXPERIENCING GOD’S RESCUE
a) Cry Out to God
David said, "I called to the Lord, and He answered me" (Psalm 34:6).
b) Maintain Faith in God
Trusting in God’s promises strengthens us in trials (Hebrews 11:6).
c) Seek Divine Instructions
God’s guidance leads to deliverance, as seen in David's pursuit of the Amalekites (1 Samuel 30:8).
d) Stand Firm in the Word
Declaring God’s Word over your situation activates His power (Isaiah 55:11).
e) Biblical Example: Jehoshaphat trusted God and praised Him, resulting in victory over his enemies (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
4. WHEN GOD RESCUES, HE RESTORES
a) Restoration of Strength
God renews the strength of those who wait on Him (Isaiah 40:31).
b) Restoration of Lost Opportunities
The Lord redeems the time and brings back what was lost (Joel 2:25).
c) Restoration of Joy and Peace
God turns mourning into dancing and restores joy (Psalm 30:11).
d) Restoration of Testimonies
His deliverance becomes a testimony to His faithfulness (Psalm 40:3).
e) Biblical Example: After Job’s trial, God restored him with double blessings (Job 42:10).
5. LIVING IN VICTORY AFTER RESCUE
a) Stay Close to God
Build your relationship with Him through prayer and worship (James 4:8).
b) Learn from the Experience
Every trial holds lessons for growth and faith (Romans 5:3-5).
c) Walk in Obedience
Follow God’s instructions to maintain your victory (Deuteronomy 28:1).
d) Encourage Others with Your Testimony
Share how God rescued you to strengthen others (Revelation 12:11).
e) Biblical Example: Peter, after being rescued from prison, continued preaching the gospel boldly (Acts 12:5-11).
CONCLUSION:
The edge of defeat is not the end for a child of God. It is often the setup for a divine turnaround. Trusting God, holding on to His promises, and seeking His guidance will always lead to deliverance and restoration. No matter how impossible your situation seems, remember that God’s power to save is limitless.
