BREAKING SPIRITUAL STAGNATION

SERMON TITLE: BREAKING SPIRITUAL STAGNATION

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Deuteronomy 1:6-7
Supporting Texts: Isaiah 40:31, Philippians 3:13-14, Hebrews 12:1-2

INTRODUCTION:
Spiritual stagnation occurs when we remain in the same place spiritually for too long, with no visible growth or progress. In Deuteronomy 1:6-7, God commands the Israelites to break camp and move forward because they had stayed at Mount Horeb for too long. Stagnation, whether spiritual, emotional, or physical, is not God’s will for His people. He desires us to grow, advance, and reach higher heights in our walk with Him. This sermon will explore how we can break free from spiritual stagnation and move forward into the abundant life God has planned for us.

1. IDENTIFYING SPIRITUAL STAGNATION

a) Lack of spiritual hunger: When we lose the desire to seek God and grow in our relationship with Him, stagnation sets in (Matthew 5:6).

b) Repetition without growth: Engaging in spiritual routines without a fresh encounter with God or transformation is a sign of stagnation.

c) Spiritual weariness: Feeling fatigued in your walk with God can cause stagnation (Isaiah 40:31).

d) Biblical Example: The Israelites in the wilderness remained stagnant due to unbelief and disobedience.

e) Recognising spiritual stagnation is the first step toward breaking free and moving forward.

2. REVIVING YOUR SPIRITUAL PASSION

a) Prayer and fasting: These disciplines awaken our spirits and draw us closer to God (Isaiah 58:6).

b) Seeking God’s presence: Spending quality time in God’s presence is vital to rekindling our love for Him and growing spiritually.

c) Biblical Example: David often sought God in times of distress, leading to personal revival (Psalm 42:1-2).

d) Worship: Worship brings us into God's presence, where we can experience personal transformation.

e) Revival begins when we actively pursue a deeper relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and worship.

3. LEAVING BEHIND THE OLD AND PRESSING FORWARD

a) Let go of past failures and disappointments: Dwelling on the past can hinder spiritual growth (Philippians 3:13-14).

b) Embrace new challenges: Spiritual growth comes when we step out in faith to embrace the new things God is calling us to.

c) Biblical Example: Abraham left his comfort zone and moved forward into God’s promises (Genesis 12:1-4).

d) Remove distractions and hindrances: Things that prevent spiritual progress must be removed, such as sin, bad habits, and toxic relationships (Hebrews 12:1-2).

e) Progress requires breaking free from the past and moving toward God's plans for our future.

4. WALKING BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT

a) Trusting God’s direction: Even when the path is unclear, we must trust God’s leading and walk in obedience (Proverbs 3:5-6).

b) Faith brings movement: We must believe that God can break every limitation and take us to new spiritual heights.

c) Biblical Example: Peter stepped out of the boat in faith and walked on water toward Jesus (Matthew 14:28-29).

d) Speak life: Our words should align with God’s promises and not with our circumstances (Proverbs 18:21).

e) Walking by faith is essential for breaking spiritual stagnation and experiencing supernatural breakthroughs.

5. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ENCOURAGE GROWTH

a) Godly relationships: Surrounding yourself with people who are spiritually vibrant and passionate about God will inspire you to grow.

b) Fellowship: Being part of a vibrant church community that encourages spiritual growth is crucial (Hebrews 10:25).

c) Biblical Example: Elisha followed Elijah closely, learning and growing in his anointing until he received a double portion (2 Kings 2:9-10).

d) Mentorship: Being accountable to spiritual mentors who can challenge and help you grow is important.

e) Growth requires a healthy spiritual environment, where you are encouraged and challenged to reach new heights.

CONCLUSION:
Spiritual stagnation is not God's will for His children. He desires for us to grow, advance, and experience His power and presence daily. To break free from stagnation, we must identify areas of our lives that need revival, rekindle our passion for God, let go of the past, walk by faith, and surround ourselves with people who encourage our spiritual growth. As we do these things, we will step into new dimensions of spiritual progress and experience the fullness of God’s plans for our lives.
