Description: This sermon reveals the greatness of God's mighty power and teaches believers how to depend on His strength for spiritual victory, endurance, effective service, and triumph over adversity.
INTRODUCTION
There are situations in life that expose the limitations of human strength. A person may possess knowledge, experience, financial resources, influence, and physical ability, yet encounter circumstances that exceed personal capacity. In such moments, the believer must remember that the God we serve is not limited by human weakness. His power is everlasting, His wisdom is perfect, and His ability is beyond human measurement.
In Ephesians 6:10, Paul gives the Church this command: “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” The expression the power of His might points us away from self-reliance towards the unlimited strength of God. Paul wrote these words in the context of spiritual warfare, teaching believers that they cannot stand against the schemes of the devil through human ability alone. They need God's strength and must put on the whole armour He has provided.
The power of God's might is not merely a doctrine to be admired; it is a divine resource upon which believers must learn to depend. God's power strengthens the weak, sustains the weary, enables obedience, empowers Christian service, and equips believers to withstand spiritual opposition. This power is demonstrated supremely in Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death through His death and resurrection. When we depend on the Lord, our confidence rests not in our own ability but in the greatness of His might.
1. UNDERSTAND THE GREATNESS OF GOD'S POWER
Before we can confidently depend on God's power, we must understand something of His greatness. Human power is limited by time, resources, knowledge, and circumstances. God's power, however, is not subject to the limitations that govern human beings. He created the heavens and the earth, sustains His creation, and accomplishes His purposes according to His wisdom.
The Bible does not present God as merely stronger than human beings. He is the Almighty Creator, whose authority extends over all creation. Understanding this truth helps us approach our challenges with faith rather than despair.
a) God Is Almighty (Genesis 17:1)
When God appeared to Abraham, He revealed Himself as Almighty God. Abraham and Sarah had waited many years for the promised child, and their natural circumstances seemed to make the promise impossible. Yet God was not limited by their age or the passage of time.
God's almightiness means that no created power can overthrow His ultimate authority. It does not mean that He must fulfil every human desire exactly as we imagine. His power operates in perfect agreement with His wisdom, holiness, and purposes.
Practical Application: When facing an impossible situation, remind yourself of God's greatness. Pray with confidence, obey His Word, and trust His wisdom concerning the outcome.
b) Nothing Is Too Hard for God (Jeremiah 32:17)
Jeremiah acknowledged that God made the heavens and the earth by His great power and outstretched arm, declaring that nothing was too hard for Him. This confession came during a difficult period in Judah's history, when the future looked uncertain.
Believers sometimes allow the size of their problems to determine the size of their expectations. But our circumstances do not reduce God's power. Even when the answer is not immediate or does not come in the form we expect, God remains able to sustain us and accomplish His purposes.
Practical Application: Bring your most difficult concerns before God. Refuse to surrender to hopelessness, and remain open to His direction and timing.
c) God's Power Is Everlasting (Isaiah 40:28)
Isaiah declares that the everlasting God does not faint or become weary. Human beings become tired, lose concentration, and experience declining physical strength. God does not experience such limitations.
This truth is especially comforting when we have prayed for a long time or served faithfully through difficult circumstances. We may become weary, but God does not run out of strength. He is able to renew those who wait upon Him.
Practical Application: Do not judge God's ability by your exhaustion. Take necessary rest, seek His presence, and trust Him to renew your strength.
d) God's Power Is Greater Than Every Created Authority (Ephesians 1:20-21)
Paul explains that God demonstrated His mighty power by raising Christ from the dead and seating Him at His right hand, far above every principality, power, might, dominion, and name that is named.
This passage establishes the supremacy of Christ over every spiritual authority. Believers do not need to live in terror of spiritual opposition because the Lord they serve reigns above every power. Their responsibility is to remain in Christ, walk in obedience, and stand in the strength He supplies.
Practical Application: Keep your confidence in the authority of Jesus Christ. Reject fear and superstition, and stand firmly on the truth of God's Word.
Biblical Example: The Creation (Genesis 1:1-3). The universe began at God's command. He spoke, and creation came into existence. The opening chapter of Genesis reveals that God's power is sufficient to accomplish what no human being could accomplish. The God who created all things is able to sustain His people as they fulfil His purposes.
2. GOD'S POWER STRENGTHENS HUMAN WEAKNESS
One of the remarkable truths of the Christian life is that God does not require us to be self-sufficient. He invites us to depend on Him. The command in Ephesians 6:10 is not an instruction to manufacture supernatural strength through human determination; it is a call to draw strength from the Lord.
Human weakness can become an opportunity for deeper dependence on God. When we acknowledge our limitations, we learn to pray more sincerely, seek wisdom, and rely on the grace of Christ rather than trusting exclusively in ourselves.
a) God Gives Power to the Weak (Isaiah 40:29)
The prophet declares that God gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might. This promise speaks to people who have reached the end of their natural resources and recognise their need for divine help.
Weakness may arise from physical exhaustion, emotional pressure, spiritual discouragement, or demanding responsibilities. God understands human limitations and invites us to depend on Him. Sometimes He strengthens us by changing circumstances; at other times, He gives us grace to endure them.
Practical Application: Tell God honestly where you feel weak. Ask for strength, seek appropriate assistance, and take the next faithful step rather than giving up.
b) His Grace Is Sufficient for You (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Lord told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Paul discovered that God's grace could sustain him even when a particular difficulty remained.
This passage teaches us that divine strength does not always remove every problem immediately. Sometimes God's power is displayed in the believer's ability to remain faithful, patient, and hopeful amid continuing challenges.
Practical Application: Do not conclude that God has abandoned you because a difficulty persists. Continue praying, trust His grace, and remain faithful while seeking wise and appropriate solutions.
c) The Lord Renews Those Who Wait on Him (Isaiah 40:31)
Isaiah teaches that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Waiting upon God involves trusting Him, seeking His direction, and remaining obedient while we anticipate His intervention.
Waiting can be difficult because we naturally desire immediate answers. However, impatience may lead to hasty decisions and unnecessary mistakes. God can use seasons of waiting to deepen our faith and prepare us for what lies ahead.
Practical Application: When progress seems slow, maintain your spiritual disciplines. Continue fulfilling your responsibilities and allow God's Word to guide your decisions.
d) Christ Strengthens You for Faithful Living (Philippians 4:13)
Paul declares that he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him. In context, he is describing his ability to remain content in both abundance and need. Christ gave him strength to remain faithful under changing circumstances.
This verse should not be treated as a guarantee that every personal ambition will succeed. Rather, it assures believers that Christ can strengthen them to endure hardship, practise contentment, obey His Word, and fulfil their responsibilities.
Practical Application: Depend on Christ as you face your daily duties. Work diligently, use your abilities wisely, and trust Him to sustain you in every season.
Biblical Example: Gideon (Judges 6:14-16). Gideon considered himself weak and insignificant when God called him to deliver Israel from Midian. God assured him of His presence. Gideon's story demonstrates that God's calling does not depend solely on a person's natural confidence or status. What matters is the Lord's presence and the believer's willingness to obey.
3. THE POWER OF HIS MIGHT IS DEMONSTRATED IN CHRIST
The greatest revelation of God's mighty power is found in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, resurrection, and exaltation, God revealed His saving purpose and triumphed over the powers of sin and death.
Christian strength must therefore be rooted in Christ, not in spiritual pride, human personalities, or religious formulas. We are strengthened as we trust Him, abide in His Word, and depend on the Holy Spirit.
a) God's Power Raised Jesus from the Dead (Ephesians 1:19-20)
Paul speaks of the exceeding greatness of God's power towards those who believe, the same power He demonstrated when He raised Christ from the dead.
The resurrection is central to Christian faith. It declares that death did not have the final word over Jesus and that God's redemptive purpose prevailed. Because Christ is risen, believers have a living hope and the assurance that their labour in the Lord is not in vain.
Practical Application: Let the reality of Christ's resurrection strengthen your hope. Continue serving God faithfully, even when your circumstances seem discouraging.
b) Christ Triumphed Over Principalities and Powers (Colossians 2:14-15)
Paul teaches that Christ disarmed principalities and powers and triumphed over them through the cross. His death was not a defeat but the means through which God accomplished redemption.
This truth is essential to understanding spiritual warfare. Believers must resist evil, but they do so in the light of Christ's triumph. We are not called to fear the powers of darkness or become obsessed with them; we are called to remain faithful to the Lord who has overcome.
Practical Application: Resist temptation, reject deception, and stand on the finished work of Christ. Do not allow fear of spiritual opposition to replace trust in God.
c) Christ Is Exalted Above Every Power (Philippians 2:9-11)
God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him the name above every name. All creation will ultimately acknowledge His lordship.
The exaltation of Christ reminds believers that His authority is supreme. Earthly positions, human institutions, and spiritual powers are not equal to Him. Our hope rests in the reigning Lord, who is faithful to His promises.
Practical Application: Honour Jesus as Lord in your decisions, relationships, work, and ministry. Let His authority shape every area of your life.
d) The Holy Spirit Empowers Believers (Acts 1:8)
Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and that they would be His witnesses. This power was given for effective testimony and the fulfilment of the mission Christ entrusted to His Church.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to witness, serve, endure opposition, and grow in godly character. Spiritual power must never be separated from the purpose of glorifying Christ and advancing the gospel.
Practical Application: Seek the Holy Spirit's help in your Christian life and service. Be bold in sharing the gospel, exercise spiritual gifts responsibly, and allow the Spirit to produce godly character in you.
Biblical Example: The Resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28:1-7). Jesus rose from the dead after His crucifixion. The empty tomb is the foundation of Christian hope and a demonstration of God's mighty power. The resurrection assures believers that death and sin do not have the final authority over those who belong to Christ.
4. THE POWER OF HIS MIGHT ENABLES SPIRITUAL VICTORY
Ephesians 6:10 appears immediately before Paul's teaching on the whole armour of God. This connection shows that spiritual warfare requires more than human courage. Believers must depend on God's strength and use the spiritual resources He has provided.
The devil seeks to deceive, tempt, discourage, and divide God's people. But believers are not helpless. Through the Word, prayer, faith, righteousness, salvation, and the gospel of peace, they can stand firm against his schemes.
a) God's Power Enables You to Stand Against the Devil (Ephesians 6:11)
Paul instructs believers to put on the whole armour of God so that they may stand against the schemes of the devil. The command to stand emphasises steadfastness, readiness, and perseverance.
Spiritual victory does not mean that believers will never face temptation. It means that they need not surrender to temptation or allow deception to govern their lives. They can remain faithful by depending on God and obeying His Word.
Practical Application: Identify areas where you are vulnerable to temptation. Establish godly boundaries, pray consistently, and seek accountability where necessary.
b) The Word of God Is a Spiritual Weapon (Ephesians 6:17)
Paul identifies the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit. Jesus demonstrated its importance when He answered Satan's temptations with Scripture in the wilderness.
The Word exposes lies, corrects error, guides decisions, and strengthens faith. However, knowing Scripture must lead to obedience; merely quoting verses while refusing to practise them will not produce spiritual maturity.
Practical Application: Study the Bible daily, memorise relevant passages, and apply God's truth to the temptations and decisions you face.
c) Prayer Keeps You Spiritually Alert (Ephesians 6:18)
Paul commands believers to pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Prayer expresses dependence on God and keeps our hearts attentive to His direction.
A prayerless life can leave a believer spiritually careless and less prepared to face temptation. Prayer helps us seek wisdom, confess sin, intercede for others, and receive strength to persevere.
Practical Application: Develop a regular prayer routine. Pray for your family, church, community, and personal spiritual growth, and remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading.
d) Faith Enables You to Resist the Enemy (1 Peter 5:8-9)
Peter instructs believers to be sober and vigilant, resisting the devil and remaining steadfast in the faith. Spiritual alertness involves recognising temptation and refusing to abandon biblical convictions under pressure.
Faith does not require us to deny practical realities. Rather, it helps us face those realities without surrendering our trust in God or compromising His truth.
Practical Application: Hold firmly to God's promises, seek godly counsel, and refuse to allow fear or pressure to drive you into sinful decisions.
Biblical Example: Paul and Silas (Acts 16:22-26). Beaten and imprisoned for preaching the gospel, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God at midnight. Their circumstances were difficult, but their devotion remained strong. Their experience illustrates how faith and prayer can sustain believers during adversity.
5. WALK DAILY IN THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD
God's power is not meant to be acknowledged only during emergencies. Ephesians 6:10 calls believers to a continuing dependence on the Lord. Spiritual strength is expressed in daily obedience, consistent devotion, perseverance, and faithful service.
A believer may experience moments of great spiritual encouragement, but lasting maturity requires a steady walk with God. We must learn to depend on Him in ordinary responsibilities as well as extraordinary crises.
a) Abide in Christ (John 15:4-5)
Jesus taught His disciples to abide in Him because a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains connected to the vine. In the same way, believers depend on Christ for spiritual fruitfulness.
Abiding in Christ involves faith, obedience, prayer, and continued dependence on His Word. It is not a substitute for responsibility; it is the source of spiritual life that enables responsible Christian living.
Practical Application: Maintain a living relationship with Christ through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and fellowship with His people.
b) Be Renewed in Your Mind (Romans 12:2)
Paul instructs believers not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. Our thoughts influence our attitudes, choices, and responses to pressure.
When the mind is shaped by fear, bitterness, pride, or worldly values, our spiritual life can be weakened. God's Word renews our thinking and helps us discern what pleases Him.
Practical Application: Examine the messages you receive through media, friendships, and daily conversations. Replace ungodly patterns of thinking with biblical truth.
c) Continue in Faithfulness (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Paul encourages believers to be steadfast, immovable, and always abounding in the work of the Lord. He assures them that their labour in the Lord is not in vain.
There will be seasons when service seems unnoticed or results appear slow. God's strength enables us to continue doing what is right without becoming controlled by discouragement or the desire for human recognition.
Practical Application: Remain faithful in your family, workplace, church, and ministry. Do your work with integrity and trust God with the results.
d) Draw Near to God for Fresh Grace (Hebrews 4:16)
The writer of Hebrews invites believers to approach the throne of grace boldly so that they may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
God does not call us to hide our weaknesses from Him. He invites us to seek His help. Through Christ, we can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He is able to provide the grace we need.
Practical Application: When you fail, repent and return to God. When you are overwhelmed, ask for help. When you need direction, seek His wisdom through prayer and Scripture.
Biblical Example: Joshua (Joshua 1:6-9). Joshua was entrusted with leading Israel after Moses' death. God repeatedly commanded him to be strong and courageous and to meditate on His Word. Joshua's responsibility was great, but he was not expected to fulfil it through human courage alone. His success required obedience to God's Word and confidence in God's presence.
CONCLUSION
Beloved, the power of God's might is greater than human strength and sufficient to sustain believers through spiritual warfare, adversity, temptation, and demanding responsibilities. God demonstrated this power supremely in the resurrection and exaltation of Jesus Christ. Through Christ, we have redemption, a living hope, and access to the grace we need to remain faithful. Our confidence must therefore rest in the Lord, not in our own abilities or in human strength.
Make it your daily commitment to be strong in the Lord. Abide in Christ, study His Word, pray continually, walk in holiness, and put on the whole armour of God. Do not allow your weakness to become a reason for surrender; let it remind you to depend more deeply on divine grace. The Lord who calls you is faithful, and He is able to strengthen you to stand firm, serve faithfully, and fulfil His purpose for your life.
