Description: This sermon teaches that a Christian husband's love must reflect Christ's sacrificial, selfless, protective, nourishing, and faithful love for the Church.
INTRODUCTION
Love is one of the most important foundations of a successful Christian marriage, but not every expression called love reflects God's standard. Some men believe that loving their wives means providing money, paying household bills, or buying expensive gifts. While material provision is important, biblical love goes much deeper. It involves sacrifice, patience, tenderness, understanding, faithfulness, and a willingness to put the wellbeing of one's wife into serious consideration. A husband may provide materially and still fail to love adequately if he neglects his wife's emotional, spiritual, and relational needs.
In Ephesians 5:25, the Apostle Paul gives husbands one of the most demanding instructions in Scripture: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Paul does not tell husbands merely to love their wives when they are attractive, cooperative, agreeable, or easy to live with. He points them to Jesus Christ, who demonstrated His love by giving Himself for the Church. Christ's love was not selfish, manipulative, or conditional upon the Church's perfection. It was a love expressed through sacrifice, service, and commitment to her good.
The Christian husband must therefore understand that marriage is not an opportunity to exercise selfish authority but a sacred responsibility to demonstrate Christlike love. His wife is not merely someone who lives in his house or helps him fulfil his ambitions; she is his covenant partner, a person created in God's image and a fellow heir of the grace of life. The strength of a Christian man's leadership is revealed not by how much fear he commands but by how faithfully he loves, serves, honours, and cares for his wife. When a husband learns to love sacrificially, he helps build a home where trust, peace, intimacy, and spiritual growth can flourish.
1. SACRIFICIAL LOVE IS THE STANDARD OF CHRISTIAN HUSBANDHOOD
The standard for a Christian husband's love is not popular culture, family tradition, personal temperament, or the behaviour of other men. It is Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 5:25, Paul commands husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church. This means that a husband's love must be measured by Christ's example of self-giving love.
Christ did not give Himself because the Church had earned His sacrifice. He acted out of divine love and grace. Similarly, a husband must not make his love entirely dependent upon his wife's mood, performance, income, appearance, or ability to meet every expectation. He must learn to love with commitment and responsibility.
a) Love That Gives Rather Than Merely Takes (Ephesians 5:25)
The expression “gave himself for it” reveals the depth of Christ's love. Jesus did not merely send something to the Church; He gave Himself. His sacrifice demonstrates that genuine love involves personal investment.
In marriage, some husbands focus on what their wives should do for them while paying little attention to what they themselves contribute. They demand respect but do not show kindness. They expect understanding but refuse to listen. They want their needs met but ignore the needs of their wives. Such an attitude contradicts the example of Christ.
A loving husband asks not only, “What am I receiving from this marriage?” but also, “What am I contributing to the wellbeing of my wife?” He recognises that love requires time, attention, patience, and practical action.
Practical Application: Examine your daily conduct and identify one practical way you can serve your wife without expecting an immediate reward.
b) Love That Pays a Price (John 15:13)
Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” This reveals that love sometimes demands a price. A husband may need to surrender personal convenience, adjust his schedule, sacrifice unnecessary spending, or give up a selfish habit for the good of his marriage.
Sacrifice does not mean destroying one's health, neglecting every other responsibility, or tolerating wrongdoing without boundaries. It means refusing to make personal comfort the highest priority when love calls for responsible action.
A husband who consistently makes time for his wife, shares family burdens, supports her development, and remains present during difficult seasons demonstrates sacrificial love.
Practical Application: Be willing to adjust your preferences and schedule when doing so will strengthen your marriage and support your wife's wellbeing.
c) Love That Continues Through Difficult Seasons (Romans 5:8)
Romans 5:8 declares that God commended His love towards us while we were still sinners. God's love was demonstrated when humanity was undeserving. This does not mean that a husband must approve of every action or ignore harmful behaviour. Rather, it teaches that love should not disappear whenever difficulties arise.
Marriage passes through seasons of financial pressure, sickness, disappointment, ageing, and emotional strain. A husband who loves sacrificially remains committed to acting with kindness and integrity even when circumstances are difficult.
Love must be accompanied by truth and accountability. When serious problems occur, a husband should address them honestly and seek appropriate help rather than using rejection, threats, or cruelty as punishment.
Practical Application: When your marriage faces difficulty, respond with prayer, honest communication, patience, and responsible action instead of withdrawing affection to control your wife.
d) Love That Reflects the Heart of Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8)
Paul urges believers to have the mind of Christ, who humbled Himself and took the form of a servant. Although Jesus possessed divine authority, He demonstrated humility through service and obedience to the Father.
A Christian husband must reject the idea that serving his wife diminishes his manhood. Helping with household responsibilities, caring for children, listening to concerns, and apologising when wrong are not signs of weakness. They are expressions of mature Christian character.
A husband who reflects Christ does not use his position to silence his wife or force his own preferences upon the family. He uses his influence to strengthen, encourage, protect, and serve.
Practical Application: Choose humility over pride and service over selfishness in your daily relationship with your wife.
Biblical Example: Jesus Christ (John 13:3-15)
Jesus washed His disciples' feet, performing a task associated with a servant. Though He was their Lord and Master, He demonstrated that godly leadership expresses itself through humble service. Christian husbands should follow this pattern by serving their wives with love rather than demanding to be served at all times.
2. SACRIFICIAL LOVE REQUIRES SELFLESSNESS
Selfishness is a major enemy of marital love. It makes a person focus on personal comfort, desires, opinions, and ambitions without adequately considering the needs of a spouse. A selfish husband may expect his wife to understand him while refusing to understand her. He may demand that she make sacrifices while remaining unwilling to make any himself.
Christlike love calls a husband to move beyond self-centred living. It does not mean that his needs are unimportant, but that he learns to consider his wife's needs alongside his own. Marriage becomes stronger when both partners practise mutual care and refuse to treat the relationship as a competition.
a) Put Away Self-Centredness (Philippians 2:4)
Philippians 2:4 instructs believers to look not only on their own things but also on the things of others. This principle is especially important in marriage because two people must share time, resources, responsibilities, and decisions.
A husband who always insists on having his way will gradually weaken the spirit of partnership in his home. He may win arguments but lose trust and closeness. Love requires the willingness to consider another person's perspective and sometimes adjust personal preferences for the benefit of the relationship.
Practical Application: Before making a major decision, consider how it will affect your wife and invite her perspective into the discussion.
b) Consider Your Wife's Emotional Needs (1 Peter 3:7)
Peter instructs husbands to dwell with their wives according to knowledge and to give them honour. This requires more than knowing a wife's name, background, and responsibilities. It involves learning what encourages her, what burdens her, what makes her feel appreciated, and what causes her pain.
Some husbands are quick to notice financial needs but slow to recognise emotional exhaustion. A wife may need a listening ear, reassurance, companionship, appreciation, or practical assistance. A husband who dismisses these needs may unintentionally create distance in the relationship.
Practical Application: Ask your wife how she is doing emotionally, listen without becoming defensive, and respond to her concerns with compassion.
c) Share Responsibilities With Love (Galatians 6:2)
Galatians 6:2 teaches believers to bear one another's burdens. Marriage is a partnership in which responsibilities should be approached with fairness, wisdom, and mutual consideration.
A husband should not assume that every domestic responsibility belongs exclusively to his wife or that earning money removes his responsibility to participate in family life. Depending on work schedules, health, ability, and circumstances, couples can agree on how to share household duties and childcare.
Sharing responsibilities communicates that the husband recognises the effort his wife contributes to the family.
Practical Application: Identify burdens your wife carries and take practical steps to share them in a fair and considerate way.
d) Celebrate Your Wife Without Competition (Romans 12:10)
Romans 12:10 encourages believers to show honour to one another. A husband should be able to celebrate his wife's achievements, gifts, intelligence, and growth without feeling threatened.
Some men become uncomfortable when their wives succeed in education, business, ministry, or other areas. Christlike love does not suppress a wife's potential to protect a husband's ego. It encourages her to develop her gifts responsibly and to contribute meaningfully to family and society.
Practical Application: Speak positively about your wife's strengths, support her reasonable aspirations, and celebrate her achievements sincerely.
Biblical Example: Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 2:8-16)
Boaz treated Ruth with consideration and generosity. He ensured that she could glean safely, gave instructions that protected her dignity, and provided practical assistance. His conduct illustrates how kindness becomes meaningful when it responds to another person's real needs.
3. SACRIFICIAL LOVE MUST BE EXPRESSED THROUGH CARE AND PROTECTION
Christ's love for the Church was active. He gave Himself for her and continues to care for His people. Similarly, a husband must express love through practical care. Love that exists only in words but is absent from daily conduct becomes difficult to trust.
Care includes spiritual encouragement, responsible provision, emotional presence, physical consideration, and the protection of a wife's dignity. Protection must never be confused with control. A husband does not demonstrate love by isolating his wife, monitoring every movement through intimidation, or deciding that she has no right to express herself. He protects by promoting safety, trust, respect, and wellbeing.
a) Nourish Your Wife (Ephesians 5:28-29)
Paul teaches that a man should love his wife as his own body. He nourishes and cherishes himself, and he should extend similar care to his wife.
Nourishing involves providing support that enables a person to flourish. In marriage, this may include responsible financial provision, encouragement during stressful seasons, assistance when a wife is ill, and support for her spiritual and personal development.
A husband should not reduce love to money alone. Material provision matters, but so do presence, affection, encouragement, and participation in family life.
Practical Application: Make a deliberate effort to care for your wife's physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs.
b) Cherish Your Wife as Precious (Ephesians 5:29)
To cherish someone is to treat that person as valuable. A husband cherishes his wife when he speaks respectfully, shows affection, protects her dignity, and avoids treating her as an inconvenience.
Repeated insults, public humiliation, threats, and contempt are incompatible with Christlike love. A wife should not have to live in fear of her husband's temper. Christian love creates room for honest conversation without intimidation.
Cherishing also means appreciating the ordinary contributions a wife makes to the home. Many acts of love go unnoticed because they happen every day, but gratitude helps prevent familiarity from becoming neglect.
Practical Application: Express appreciation regularly, speak respectfully in private and public, and never use humiliation as a way to gain control.
c) Provide Responsible Care for Your Household (1 Timothy 5:8)
Scripture emphasises the responsibility of caring for one's household. A husband should take his responsibilities seriously and work diligently, according to his circumstances and abilities, to support the family's needs.
Responsible provision requires planning, honesty, and wisdom. It also involves discussing financial realities rather than hiding debts, making reckless commitments, or leaving a spouse uncertain about important family matters.
Provision should be approached as a shared family responsibility, with both partners contributing according to their abilities and circumstances. The worth of a husband or wife must never be measured solely by income.
Practical Application: Work diligently, plan your finances wisely, and discuss household needs and financial decisions honestly with your wife.
d) Honour Your Wife as a Fellow Heir of Grace (1 Peter 3:7)
Peter reminds husbands that their wives are fellow heirs of the grace of life. This means that a wife has spiritual dignity before God and must be treated with honour.
Peter also warns that a husband's treatment of his wife has spiritual significance, even affecting his prayers. A man cannot consistently mistreat his wife and assume that his public religious activities excuse his private conduct.
A Christian husband must therefore examine how he behaves at home. The true test of his character is not only how he speaks in church but also how he treats his wife when no one else is watching.
Practical Application: Honour your wife in your decisions, conversations, and private conduct, remembering that God takes your treatment of her seriously.
Biblical Example: Joseph, the Husband of Mary (Matthew 1:18-25)
When Joseph learned of Mary's pregnancy, he initially considered ending their engagement quietly rather than exposing her to public disgrace. After receiving divine direction, he obeyed God and took Mary as his wife. His response demonstrates thoughtfulness, obedience, and a willingness to accept responsibility in a difficult situation.
4. SACRIFICIAL LOVE REQUIRES PATIENCE, FORGIVENESS, AND UNDERSTANDING
No marriage is made up of two perfect people. Every husband and wife has weaknesses, habits that need correction, and moments of failure. Without patience and forgiveness, these imperfections can become sources of constant conflict. A husband who desires to love as Christ loves must learn to respond to human weakness with truth, grace, and a commitment to growth.
Patience does not mean ignoring destructive behaviour or allowing wrongdoing to continue without accountability. Forgiveness does not eliminate the need for repentance or change. Rather, Christian love refuses to make anger, revenge, or humiliation the normal response to conflict.
a) Be Patient With Your Wife (1 Corinthians 13:4)
First Corinthians 13 teaches that love suffers long and is kind. Patience gives a husband the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively whenever his wife disappoints him.
A husband must recognise that people have different temperaments, communication styles, and ways of processing difficulties. Patience helps him listen, ask questions, and seek understanding before making judgments.
This does not mean that every disagreement must be postponed or that important issues should never be addressed. It means that difficult matters should be handled with self-control and respect.
Practical Application: When you feel irritated, pause before speaking, pray for wisdom, and address the matter when you can communicate calmly.
b) Refuse Bitterness (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Paul commands believers to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, and evil speaking, and to be kind and forgiving. Bitterness develops when offences are repeatedly remembered without being addressed constructively.
A husband must learn to deal with hurt honestly. He should not store up old mistakes as weapons to use during every new disagreement. When he has been wronged, he can seek a truthful conversation, appropriate support, and a path towards healing.
Where serious betrayal or abuse has occurred, healing may require boundaries, counselling, accountability, and time. Forgiveness should never be used to silence a victim or compel someone to remain in danger.
Practical Application: Address unresolved hurts honestly and seek a safe, constructive path towards forgiveness and healing.
c) Be Willing to Apologise (James 5:16)
Christian maturity includes the ability to acknowledge wrongdoing. A husband who refuses to apologise because he believes that admitting a mistake weakens his authority is protecting his pride rather than strengthening his marriage.
A sincere apology identifies the wrong, accepts responsibility, acknowledges its effect, and seeks to make things right. It is not genuine to say, “I am sorry you feel that way,” while refusing to recognise one's harmful behaviour.
A husband demonstrates strength when he can admit, “I was wrong. I hurt you, and I want to change.”
Practical Application: When you are wrong, apologise sincerely, avoid excuses, and demonstrate repentance through changed behaviour.
d) Practise Gentle and Respectful Communication (Proverbs 15:1)
Proverbs 15:1 teaches that a soft answer turns away wrath, while grievous words stir up anger. The tone of a conversation can either reduce tension or intensify it.
A husband must learn to communicate without shouting, threatening, insulting, or using silence as punishment. When a discussion becomes heated, it may be wise to pause and return to it at an agreed time rather than allowing anger to take control.
Gentleness is not weakness. It is the disciplined use of words and emotions in a way that protects dignity while addressing the truth.
Practical Application: Speak firmly when necessary, but refuse verbal cruelty. Take a break during heated arguments and return to the issue when both of you can speak safely and respectfully.
Biblical Example: Joseph and His Brothers (Genesis 45:1-15)
Joseph had suffered greatly because of his brothers' betrayal, yet he eventually spoke to them and moved towards reconciliation. His story illustrates the possibility of responding to past injury without allowing revenge to control the future. Reconciliation must still be accompanied by honesty and responsible change.
5. SACRIFICIAL LOVE MUST BE FAITHFUL AND PURE
A husband's love cannot reflect Christ if he deliberately violates the marriage covenant. Faithfulness involves more than avoiding physical adultery. It also includes honesty, wise boundaries, responsible use of technology, and the refusal to cultivate secret relationships that undermine marital trust.
Temptation can come through workplace relationships, social media, pornography, emotional attachments, or opportunities that appear harmless at first. A Christian husband must take responsibility for the choices he makes and establish boundaries that protect his marriage.
a) Remain Faithful to Your Marriage Covenant (Hebrews 13:4)
Hebrews 13:4 teaches that marriage is honourable and that the marriage bed must be kept undefiled. Marital faithfulness is a sacred responsibility, not merely a rule to avoid being caught in wrongdoing.
Adultery can inflict deep emotional pain and destroy trust. A husband who loves sacrificially protects his marriage by refusing to pursue sexual relationships outside it and by seeking help when temptation becomes difficult to manage.
Practical Application: Make a firm commitment to sexual faithfulness and avoid situations that deliberately expose you to adultery.
b) Guard Your Heart and Eyes (Matthew 5:27-28)
Jesus teaches that purity begins in the heart. What a person repeatedly entertains in thought can influence desires and behaviour.
A husband should exercise discernment regarding sexualised media, flirtatious conversations, and private interactions that encourage inappropriate desire. He must not assume that he can continually feed temptation without consequences.
Guarding the heart does not mean treating every interaction with a woman as suspicious. It means maintaining appropriate, honest boundaries and refusing to nurture desires that threaten the marriage covenant.
Practical Application: Be disciplined with media, conversations, and private relationships, and seek trusted accountability if you struggle with sexual temptation.
c) Be Honest and Trustworthy (Proverbs 12:22)
Scripture teaches that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, while those who deal truly are His delight. Honesty is essential to marital trust.
A husband weakens his relationship when he hides important financial decisions, lies about his whereabouts, conceals destructive habits, or manipulates information to avoid accountability. Even when the truth is uncomfortable, honesty provides a foundation upon which problems can be addressed.
Practical Application: Tell the truth about important matters, keep your commitments, and be willing to discuss difficult issues without deception.
d) Renew Your Friendship and Affection (Proverbs 5:18-19)
Proverbs encourages joy and delight within marriage. Faithfulness is not merely the absence of adultery; it also includes nurturing the bond between husband and wife.
A husband should continue to invest in friendship, conversation, shared experiences, and appropriate affection. Neglect can create distance even where neither partner intends to be unfaithful. Healthy closeness grows through regular attention and mutual care.
Practical Application: Make time for meaningful conversations, shared activities, and expressions of affection that both you and your wife value.
Biblical Example: Joseph in Potiphar's House (Genesis 39:7-12)
Joseph rejected the sexual advances of Potiphar's wife because he understood that yielding would be a sin against God. His example teaches that integrity sometimes requires immediate refusal and a willingness to leave a tempting situation rather than negotiate with it.
6. SACRIFICIAL LOVE HELPS YOUR WIFE FULFIL HER GOD-GIVEN PURPOSE
A Christian husband should not regard his wife's gifts, education, calling, or achievements as threats to his position. Love seeks the flourishing of the person who is loved. A husband who reflects Christ encourages his wife to grow spiritually, develop her abilities, and contribute meaningfully to the family, the Church, and society.
This does not mean that every decision must be made without considering family responsibilities. Rather, couples should work together to balance their responsibilities and opportunities. A loving husband does not deliberately diminish his wife's confidence to maintain control over her.
a) Encourage Her Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 5:26-27)
Christ's purpose for the Church includes her sanctification and spiritual wellbeing. In a similar way, a husband should encourage his wife's walk with God.
He should support her participation in worship, prayer, Bible study, and Christian service. He must not use spiritual authority to prevent her from growing in the Lord or to demand unquestioning obedience to his personal preferences.
Practical Application: Encourage your wife to grow in Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and the responsible use of her spiritual gifts.
b) Recognise and Support Her Gifts (Romans 12:6-8)
Romans 12 teaches that believers have different gifts according to the grace given to them. A wife may possess gifts in teaching, administration, business, hospitality, leadership, creativity, or other areas of service.
A husband should recognise these abilities and encourage their responsible development. He can offer counsel, practical support, and constructive feedback without belittling her efforts or competing for recognition.
Practical Application: Identify your wife's strengths and discuss practical ways to support her growth and service.
c) Make Decisions Through Wise Partnership (Proverbs 15:22)
Proverbs teaches that plans are established through counsel. Marriage involves decisions about finances, children, work, ministry, education, and family responsibilities. Such decisions benefit from careful discussion rather than unilateral action.
A husband should not assume that leadership requires making every decision alone. Listening to his wife's insight can prevent mistakes and strengthen mutual trust. A shared decision-making process allows both partners to take responsibility for the family's direction.
Practical Application: Consult your wife about major decisions, listen to her reasoning, and seek agreement wherever possible.
d) Become Her Encourager, Not Her Competitor (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Paul instructs believers to comfort and edify one another. A Christian husband should be one of the people who most consistently encourages his wife.
He should not ridicule her dreams, compare her unfavourably with other women, or repeatedly remind her of past failures. Constructive correction may sometimes be necessary, but it should aim at growth rather than shame.
Practical Application: Speak words that strengthen your wife's confidence, celebrate her progress, and help her recover when she experiences disappointment.
Biblical Example: Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:24-26)
Aquila and Priscilla worked together in ministry and helped Apollos understand the way of God more accurately. Their partnership illustrates the value of respecting one another's knowledge and contributing together to God's work.
7. A SACRIFICIAL HUSBAND MUST WALK WITH GOD
A husband cannot consistently express Christlike love through human strength alone. Pride, anger, impatience, selfish desires, and the pressures of daily life can weaken his commitment. He needs an ongoing relationship with God that shapes his character and enables him to respond to his wife with grace.
Prayer, Scripture, fellowship, accountability, and obedience help a husband grow in spiritual maturity. However, spiritual disciplines must be accompanied by practical change. A man who prays publicly but mistreats his wife privately must allow God's Word to correct his conduct.
a) Be Filled With the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
The fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. These qualities are essential to a healthy Christian marriage.
A husband who is growing in the Spirit should become more patient, gentle, truthful, and self-controlled. Spiritual maturity is demonstrated not only through church activity but also through the way he responds when he is tired, disappointed, challenged, or misunderstood.
Practical Application: Ask the Holy Spirit to develop His fruit in your character, especially in the areas where your wife experiences difficulty with you.
b) Study and Obey God's Word (Psalm 119:105)
God's Word provides guidance for decisions, attitudes, and relationships. A husband who regularly studies Scripture can better understand God's standards for love, leadership, faithfulness, and responsibility.
Knowledge alone is not enough. Scripture must be obeyed. It is possible to quote verses about marriage while refusing to practise patience, humility, or kindness. The Word becomes effective in daily life when it changes behaviour.
Practical Application: Study passages about Christian character and marriage, then identify one practical way to apply what you learn each day.
c) Pray for Your Wife and Family (Job 1:5)
Job demonstrated concern for his family by bringing them before God. His example highlights the importance of intercession for those we love.
A husband should pray for his wife's health, spiritual growth, decisions, work, relationships, and wellbeing. Prayer must not replace listening or practical care; it should strengthen his commitment to act responsibly and lovingly.
Practical Application: Make regular time to pray for your wife by name and ask how you can support the needs you bring before God.
d) Remain Accountable to Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Scripture reminds us that each person is accountable to God. A husband must not assume that being the head of the household places him above correction or exempts him from responsibility.
He should be willing to receive godly counsel, admit mistakes, seek pastoral or professional help when needed, and take responsibility for harmful patterns. Accountability is not a threat to godly leadership; it is an expression of humility before the Lord.
Practical Application: Invite trusted, mature counsel when you face persistent marital difficulties, and take concrete steps to correct your own behaviour.
Biblical Example: Cornelius (Acts 10:1-8, 30-33)
Cornelius was described as a devout man who feared God with his household and regularly prayed. His example reminds Christian husbands of the importance of a sincere spiritual life that influences the home and reaches beyond it to serve God's purposes.
CONCLUSION
The husband's sacrificial love is one of the clearest ways a Christian marriage can reflect the character of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:25 calls every husband to love his wife as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. This love is selfless, faithful, patient, protective, understanding, and practical. It is expressed through respectful communication, responsible provision, shared burdens, sexual faithfulness, forgiveness, and encouragement of a wife's spiritual and personal growth. It does not use authority to intimidate or control; it follows Christ's example of humility and service.
Every husband must therefore examine his life in the light of God's Word. Do not measure your love only by the money you provide, the decisions you make, or the position you occupy in the home. Ask whether your wife experiences your care, kindness, respect, faithfulness, and willingness to listen. Where you have failed, humble yourself before God, apologise where necessary, and take practical steps towards change. Depend on the Holy Spirit to help you become a husband whose love reflects the heart of Christ. May your marriage become a testimony of God's grace and a blessing to your family, the Church, and the generations that follow.
