Description: This message reveals how Jesus Christ brings spiritual illumination, direction, deliverance from darkness, and a transformed life to those who respond to His call.
INTRODUCTION
Light is essential to life. It enables us to see, recognise danger, understand our surroundings, and move in the right direction. Darkness, on the other hand, limits visibility and makes it difficult to distinguish the right path from the wrong one. Spiritually, humanity needs the light of God because sin, ignorance, deception, and separation from God prevent people from living according to His truth and purpose.
In Ephesians 5:14, Paul declares, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” This verse presents both a command and a promise. The command is to awake and arise, while the promise is that Christ will give light. God does not call us out of spiritual darkness merely to leave us struggling on our own. He calls us to turn to Jesus, who reveals the truth, transforms the heart, and leads us into a life that pleases God.
The light Christ gives is more than natural understanding or human wisdom. It is spiritual illumination that helps us know God, recognise His will, overcome the works of darkness, and walk in righteousness. Whatever your present condition, Christ's light can expose what needs to change, guide you through uncertainty, and help you fulfil your divine purpose. The important question is whether you are willing to respond to His light and follow where He leads.
1. CHRIST IS THE SOURCE OF TRUE LIGHT
The first truth we must understand is that Jesus Christ is not merely a messenger who talks about light; He is the Light of the world. Human wisdom can provide information, education can develop the mind, and experience can offer lessons, but none of these can replace the spiritual life and truth that come through Christ.
When Paul says that Christ shall give thee light, he points us towards the Lord as the One who brings spiritual understanding and renewal. We must therefore look beyond human opinions, traditions, and achievements and allow Jesus to become the centre of our lives.
a) Christ Is the Light of the World (John 8:12)
Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This statement reveals His unique position as the One who brings spiritual illumination to humanity.
To follow Jesus is to trust Him, receive His teaching, and submit to His authority. We cannot claim to follow the Light while deliberately choosing a path that contradicts His Word. His light reveals both who God is and how we should live before Him.
Practical Application: Make Christ the centre of your decisions, relationships, ambitions, and daily conduct. Do not allow popular opinions to lead you away from His truth.
b) Christ Gives Light to Those in Darkness (John 1:4-5)
John teaches that life was in Christ and that this life was the light of humanity. He further declares that the light shines in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Darkness may describe spiritual ignorance, deception, sinful living, hopelessness, or a lack of knowledge of God. Christ comes to reveal the truth and offer the life that humanity cannot produce by its own efforts. The darkness around a person does not make Christ's light powerless.
Practical Application: Whatever darkness you are facing, turn to Christ in faith. Search His Word for guidance, seek godly counsel where necessary, and take obedient steps towards the truth He reveals.
c) Christ Reveals the Father (John 14:9)
Jesus told Philip that whoever had seen Him had seen the Father. Through Christ's words, actions, compassion, holiness, and sacrifice, we see the character and purpose of God revealed.
People sometimes form their understanding of God through painful experiences, human traditions, or incomplete knowledge. Jesus corrects our distorted understanding by showing us God's character and the way to reconciliation with Him.
Practical Application: Study the life and teachings of Jesus in the Gospels. Allow His compassion, truthfulness, holiness, and obedience to shape your understanding of God and your relationship with others.
d) Christ's Light Cannot Be Overcome by Darkness (John 1:5)
The darkness has not overcome the light. This does not mean believers will never experience opposition, grief, temptation, or difficult seasons. It means that darkness cannot extinguish Christ's truth or defeat His ultimate purpose.
When challenges arise, believers must not conclude that God has abandoned them. We can hold firmly to His Word, continue in faith, and trust His power even when circumstances are difficult.
Practical Application: When fear or discouragement comes, remember God's promises. Pray, stand on Scripture, and continue doing what is right rather than allowing difficult circumstances to lead you into disobedience.
Biblical Example: Saul's Encounter on the Damascus Road (Acts 9:3-6, 17-20)
Saul was travelling to Damascus to persecute believers when a light from heaven shone around him and he encountered Jesus. His encounter exposed his error and changed the direction of his life. The man who had opposed the Gospel became a preacher of Christ. This demonstrates how an encounter with Jesus can illuminate a person's understanding and redirect their purpose.
2. CHRIST'S LIGHT BRINGS SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING
One of the greatest needs in the Christian life is spiritual understanding. A person can possess education, intelligence, and experience yet remain unaware of God's will. Spiritual light enables us to understand divine truth and apply it to everyday living.
When Christ gives light, He helps us recognise what is true, distinguish righteousness from sin, and understand the direction in which God calls us to walk. We must not be satisfied with hearing God's Word without seeking to understand and obey it.
a) Christ Opens the Eyes of Our Understanding (Ephesians 1:17-18)
Paul prayed that the eyes of the believers' understanding would be enlightened so they might know the hope of God's calling and the riches of His inheritance. His prayer shows that spiritual truth must become clear and meaningful to our hearts.
We need more than information about God; we need a growing understanding of His character, promises, calling, and purposes. This understanding strengthens our faith and helps us live with spiritual confidence.
Practical Application: Pray regularly for spiritual understanding as you read Scripture. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand God's truth and show you how to apply it.
b) Christ Shows Us the Way to Walk (Psalm 119:105)
The psalmist declares that God's Word is a lamp to his feet and a light to his path. God's truth gives direction when choices are difficult and the future is uncertain.
We may not know every detail of what lies ahead, but the Lord provides sufficient guidance for the next step of obedience. His Word teaches us how to handle relationships, manage resources, respond to opposition, and conduct ourselves with integrity.
Practical Application: Before making significant decisions, examine the relevant principles in Scripture. Pray for wisdom, consider the consequences, and seek mature Christian counsel when necessary.
c) Christ Exposes Deception and Error (John 3:20-21)
Jesus explained that people who practise evil may avoid the light because they do not want their deeds exposed. Those who practise truth, however, come to the light.
Christ's light reveals false beliefs, dishonest motives, and behaviours that contradict God's truth. Exposure can be uncomfortable, but it is necessary for repentance and growth. We cannot be transformed while deliberately resisting the truth.
Practical Application: Be willing to examine your beliefs and conduct in the light of Scripture. When God's Word corrects you, receive the correction humbly rather than defending your error.
d) Christ Teaches Us to Discern God's Will (Ephesians 5:17)
Paul urges believers not to be unwise but to understand what the will of the Lord is. Spiritual illumination should lead to wise living, not merely the accumulation of religious knowledge.
Understanding God's will involves learning His revealed commands, developing a renewed mind, and making choices that honour Him. Not every decision will come with a special sign, but Scripture gives us principles by which we can make wise and faithful choices.
Practical Application: Learn to evaluate your plans according to God's Word. Ask whether your decisions reflect love, holiness, truth, justice, and faithfulness to Christ.
Biblical Example: The Disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32)
After His resurrection, Jesus joined two disciples who were struggling to understand what had happened. He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself, and their understanding began to change. Later, they recognised Him, and their hearts were stirred. Their experience illustrates how Christ brings light through the understanding of God's Word and helps His followers see His purposes more clearly.
3. CHRIST'S LIGHT DELIVERS US FROM DARKNESS
The light of Christ does not merely help us understand our condition; it calls us out of the dominion of darkness. Through His saving work, Jesus offers forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and freedom from the power of sin.
This deliverance must not be reduced to the removal of external difficulties alone. Christ's greatest work is to bring sinners into a right relationship with God and transform the way they live. His light gives us a new identity and a new direction.
a) Christ Delivers Us from the Power of Darkness (Colossians 1:13-14)
Paul declares that God has delivered believers from the power of darkness and translated them into the kingdom of His dear Son, in whom we have redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of sins.
Through Jesus, we are no longer required to live under the rule of sin. We are called to belong to Christ and live under His gracious authority. This new position brings both privilege and responsibility.
Practical Application: Thank God for the salvation He has provided through Christ. Reject the habits and influences that draw you back towards darkness, and seek support when you need help overcoming persistent sinful patterns.
b) Christ Breaks the Bondage of Sin (John 8:34-36)
Jesus taught that whoever commits sin is a servant of sin, but the Son can make people free indeed. Sin enslaves by controlling desires, shaping habits, and damaging relationships with God and others.
Freedom in Christ does not mean that temptation disappears. It means that believers can depend on His grace, obey His Word, and resist the domination of sinful desires. Where we have failed, we must repent and seek His help rather than surrender to hopelessness.
Practical Application: Identify the sins and habits that repeatedly hinder your walk with God. Confess them, establish godly boundaries, and seek pastoral or professional support when appropriate.
c) Christ Brings Forgiveness and Cleansing (1 John 1:7-9)
John teaches that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin and that God is faithful and just to forgive those who confess their sins. The light of Christ invites us to honesty rather than concealment.
We do not need to pretend that we have never failed. We must confess our sins sincerely, turn away from them, and trust in God's mercy. Forgiveness restores our fellowship with God and enables us to continue in obedience.
Practical Application: Do not hide your sins from God or allow shame to keep you away from Him. Confess your failures, receive His forgiveness, and make practical changes that support a holy life.
d) Christ Gives Us a New Identity (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Paul declares that if anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creature; old things have passed away, and all things have become new. Salvation changes our relationship with God and begins a process of transformation in our character and conduct.
Our past may explain some of our struggles, but it does not have to determine our future in Christ. We must learn to live according to our new identity and allow God's grace to shape our habits, attitudes, and choices.
Practical Application: Stop defining yourself only by your past failures. Remember what Christ has done for you and practise the new life of truth, love, holiness, and obedience.
Biblical Example: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10)
Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector whose occupation had made him wealthy, but his encounter with Jesus brought a change of heart. He offered to give to the poor and repay those he had defrauded. Jesus declared that salvation had come to his house. Zacchaeus' transformation shows that the light of Christ can change a person's values and produce visible evidence of repentance.
4. WALK CONTINUALLY IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST
Receiving the light of Christ is the beginning of a new way of life. God does not call us to receive His truth and then return willingly to darkness. He calls us to walk daily in fellowship with Him, allowing His Word to govern our decisions and His Spirit to shape our character.
Walking in the light requires consistency. It involves obeying God when nobody is watching, maintaining a clean conscience, showing love to others, and continuing in faith during difficult seasons. Our lives should increasingly reflect the One who has called us out of darkness.
a) Walk as a Child of Light (Ephesians 5:8-9)
Paul reminds believers that they were once darkness but are now light in the Lord. Therefore, they must walk as children of light, producing goodness, righteousness, and truth.
A Christian's identity must be visible in daily conduct. The light of Christ should influence how we speak, work, handle money, treat family members, and respond to people who disagree with us.
Practical Application: Examine your daily behaviour. Choose honesty over deception, kindness over cruelty, purity over compromise, and righteousness over convenience.
b) Maintain Fellowship with God (1 John 1:7)
John teaches that walking in the light involves fellowship with God and with fellow believers. Spiritual growth is not meant to be an isolated journey. We need the Word, prayer, worship, and the encouragement of a healthy Christian community.
Fellowship does not mean that believers are perfect. It means that we walk together in truth, encourage one another towards faithfulness, and respond humbly when correction is necessary.
Practical Application: Maintain regular personal devotion and participate faithfully in a Bible-believing church. Build relationships that encourage spiritual growth, accountability, and mutual support.
c) Let Your Light Shine Before Others (Matthew 5:14-16)
Jesus described His disciples as the light of the world and instructed them to let their light shine before others so that people might see their good works and glorify the Father.
Christians are called to demonstrate the Gospel through both words and actions. Our conduct should make the goodness of God visible to our families, neighbours, colleagues, and communities. Good works do not purchase salvation; they provide evidence of a life being shaped by Christ.
Practical Application: Look for practical opportunities to serve, encourage, help, and share the Gospel with others. Let your character support the message you preach.
d) Remain Faithful in Times of Darkness (Isaiah 60:1-2)
Isaiah proclaims, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.” He also describes darkness covering the earth while the Lord rises upon His people.
Believers may live in difficult environments and experience seasons of uncertainty, but they must not abandon their faith. We are called to reflect God's truth and character even when others choose a different path. Our confidence is in the Lord, who remains faithful through every season.
Practical Application: Do not compromise your convictions because of pressure from your environment. Continue to pray, obey God's Word, and demonstrate Christlike character even when doing so is difficult.
Biblical Example: Daniel in Babylon (Daniel 6:4-10, 19-23)
Daniel lived in a foreign culture where his faithfulness to God brought opposition. Yet he continued to pray and remained committed to his convictions. Even when prayer was forbidden under the king's decree, Daniel maintained his devotion to God. His life demonstrates the importance of walking faithfully in God's light even in an unfriendly environment.
CONCLUSION
The promise of Ephesians 5:14 is both powerful and personal: “Christ shall give thee light.” Jesus is the source of spiritual life, understanding, deliverance, and direction. His light reveals the truth about God and about ourselves, exposes what must change, and leads us into a life of holiness and purpose. No matter how confused, discouraged, or spiritually weak you may feel, the Lord calls you to arise and respond to His light. Do not settle for darkness when Christ has offered you His truth and grace.
Your responsibility is to turn to Christ, receive His Word, obey His leading, and continue walking in the light. Let His truth guide your decisions, His grace strengthen you against sin, and His love shape your relationships. As you walk with Him, may your life increasingly reflect His goodness and point others towards the Saviour. Arise, receive His light, and walk faithfully in the purpose He has given you.
