Description: This message teaches believers how the Holy Spirit transforms their thinking, attitudes and decisions so that their lives reflect the character of Christ.

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is a life of transformation. When a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, the spirit is made alive unto God, but the mind must continually be renewed by the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. Salvation changes our relationship with God, while the renewing of our minds progressively changes how we think, speak, behave and respond to life.

In Ephesians 4:17–22, Paul warns believers against living according to the empty thinking, darkened understanding and corrupt desires of their former way of life. He reminds them that they have learned Christ and must put off the old man, which is corrupted by deceitful lusts. Immediately afterwards, he commands them to be renewed in the spirit of their minds and to put on the new man, created in righteousness and true holiness.

Many Christians desire a new life but continue to entertain old thoughts, old attitudes, old fears and old patterns of behaviour. They want new results while maintaining an unchanged mindset. However, lasting transformation begins when God changes the way we think. As our minds are renewed, our choices become wiser, our faith becomes stronger, our relationships improve and our lives increasingly reflect Jesus Christ.

1. UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR A RENEWED MIND

The mind is central to our decisions, attitudes, interpretations and responses. What we consistently allow to occupy our minds influences the direction of our lives. A person may be born again and still struggle with negative thinking, fear, bitterness, insecurity or worldly values.

This is why the believer must not neglect the inner life. We must allow the Word of God to challenge wrong assumptions, correct false beliefs and establish God's truth in our hearts.

a) The old way of thinking must change (Ephesians 4:22-23)

Paul connects the putting off of the old man with the renewing of the mind. The old man represents the former way of life, corrupted by sinful desires and deception. The old mindset often encourages selfishness, pride, unforgiveness, fear and disobedience.

You cannot consistently practise a new life while deliberately preserving the thinking that governed your old life. God calls you to recognise thoughts that contradict His Word and submit them to His truth.

b) Wrong thinking can hinder spiritual growth (Romans 8:6)

“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

A mind controlled by sinful desires produces spiritual weakness, while a mind directed by the Spirit leads towards life and peace. If a believer constantly feeds on bitterness, lust, jealousy and unbelief, these influences can weaken spiritual sensitivity.

Spiritual growth requires us to examine not only our actions but also the thoughts that produce those actions.

c) Your thoughts influence your actions (Proverbs 23:7)

The things you repeatedly think about can influence your speech, habits and decisions. A person who continually expects failure may withdraw from opportunities, while someone who meditates on God's promises can develop courage to obey Him.

This does not mean that every thought automatically determines an outcome. It means that our thinking plays an important role in shaping our conduct and responses.

d) God desires truth in your inward life (Psalm 51:6)

God is concerned about what happens within us. He does not merely desire outward religious activity; He desires inward sincerity, purity and spiritual understanding.

Allow God to expose hidden attitudes that need correction. Genuine renewal begins when we stop defending wrong thinking and become willing to receive God's correction.

Biblical Example: Peter (Matthew 16:21-23)

Peter loved Jesus, yet when Jesus spoke about His coming suffering and death, Peter resisted the idea. Jesus corrected Peter's thinking because he was considering matters from a human perspective rather than God's purpose. This teaches us that sincere believers can still need correction in their thinking.

2. ALLOW THE WORD OF GOD TO RENEW YOUR MIND

The Word of God is one of the principal means through which our minds are renewed. It reveals God's character, corrects our understanding and teaches us how to live. We cannot consistently think according to God's will if we neglect the truth He has revealed.

Renewal requires more than hearing a sermon occasionally. It involves reading, meditating on, believing and obeying the Scriptures.

a) Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2)

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The world constantly presents values that may oppose God's will. Believers must refuse to accept every popular opinion, cultural pressure or ungodly pattern as their standard.

As the Word reshapes our thinking, we become better able to recognise and practise what pleases God.

b) Meditate on God's Word continually (Joshua 1:8)

Meditation means giving careful attention to God's Word until its truth influences our understanding and conduct. It is not enough to own a Bible; we must allow its message to take root in us.

When you face fear, meditate on God's promises. When you are tempted to retaliate, remember His command to forgive. When you are confused, seek direction from Scripture and godly counsel.

c) Let the Word dwell richly in you (Colossians 3:16)

God's Word should not be a visitor in your life; it should have a permanent place in your heart. The more deeply Scripture shapes your values, the better prepared you become to recognise error and respond with wisdom.

Fill your mind with truth instead of continually feeding it with content that weakens your faith and corrupts your desires.

d) Use the truth to confront wrong thoughts (John 8:32)

Jesus taught that knowing the truth brings freedom. Wrong thoughts often survive because they are accepted without examination. The Word of God gives us a standard by which to test our assumptions.

When a thought says, “God has abandoned me,” remember His promise never to forsake His people. When guilt reminds you of your past, remember that forgiveness and a new life are available through Christ to those who repent and believe.

Biblical Example: Jesus in the Wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11)

When Satan tempted Jesus, the Lord answered with the Scriptures. Jesus did not surrender to temptation or allow the tempter to redefine His identity and mission. His example teaches us to know God's Word and use its truth to resist deception.

3. COOPERATE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 4:23 speaks of being renewed in the spirit of the mind. This renewal is not simply positive thinking or human determination. It involves God's transforming work within us as we respond to His truth and yield to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit helps believers understand spiritual truth, recognise sinful attitudes and develop Christlike character. Our responsibility is to remain teachable, obedient and sensitive to His leading.

a) Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)

Walking in the Spirit means living in daily dependence on the Holy Spirit rather than allowing sinful desires to govern us. It involves seeking His guidance, obeying God's Word and relying on His strength to do what is right.

When wrong thoughts arise, do not entertain them carelessly. Turn to God in prayer, remember His Word and choose the response that honours Christ.

b) Allow God to change your inner life (Psalm 51:10)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

David recognised that he needed more than outward correction. He needed God to work within him. This should also be our prayer.

Ask God to remove pride, cleanse impure motives and restore a willing spirit. Do not merely ask Him to change your circumstances; ask Him to change you.

c) Put away bitterness and corrupt attitudes (Ephesians 4:31-32)

The renewing of the mind must affect how we treat people. Bitterness, anger, malice and unforgiveness can become entrenched attitudes if they are continually entertained.

The Holy Spirit helps us choose forgiveness, kindness and compassion. This does not mean tolerating abuse or abandoning wise boundaries. It means refusing to let hatred control our hearts.

d) Develop the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

A renewed mind should contribute to a transformed character. The fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

Spiritual maturity is not measured only by how loudly we pray or how much we know. It is also seen in patience under pressure, humility in leadership, self-control in temptation and love towards others.

Biblical Example: Saul Becomes Paul (Acts 9:1-22)

Saul initially persecuted Christians because he believed he was defending his religious convictions. After encountering Jesus, his understanding and direction changed. He became a preacher of the faith he had once opposed. His life demonstrates how an encounter with Christ can radically redirect a person's thinking and purpose.

4. REJECT NEGATIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE THOUGHT PATTERNS

Not every thought deserves a place in your heart. Some thoughts arise from fear, past experiences, temptation, misinformation or the influence of a fallen world. Believers must learn to examine their thoughts instead of accepting everything they feel or imagine as truth.

Renewing the mind requires deliberate choices about what we believe, what we dwell on and how we interpret our experiences.

a) Cast down thoughts that oppose God's truth (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

Paul teaches believers to bring thoughts into captivity to the obedience of Christ. This involves identifying ideas that contradict God's truth and refusing to let them govern our lives.

When pride encourages you to exalt yourself, submit to Christ's humility. When temptation presents sin as harmless, remember God's instructions and choose obedience.

b) Refuse to be ruled by fear (2 Timothy 1:7)

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Fear can cause people to avoid responsibility, abandon godly opportunities and imagine defeat before they begin. God calls us to exercise faith, wisdom and courage.

A sound mind does not mean ignoring real dangers. It means responding to challenges with trust in God, sound judgement and responsible action rather than allowing fear to control us.

c) Guard what enters your mind (Philippians 4:8)

Paul instructs believers to think about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report. This is a practical guide for our daily mental diet.

Be mindful of the conversations you entertain, the media you consume and the ideas you repeatedly rehearse. Choose influences that strengthen your faith, purity, wisdom and love.

d) Replace destructive thoughts with godly truth (Philippians 4:9)

Renewal is not merely rejecting wrong thoughts; it also involves replacing them with what is right. Replace revenge with forgiveness, despair with hope in God, selfishness with service and dishonesty with integrity.

When you catch yourself thinking wrongly, pause, identify the error and deliberately choose a response consistent with Scripture.

Biblical Example: Caleb and the Ten Spies (Numbers 13:30-33; 14:6-9)

Ten spies focused on the size of the obstacles and concluded that Israel could not possess the land. Caleb and Joshua recognised the difficulties but trusted God's promise. Their different responses demonstrate how perspective affects courage and obedience. Faith does not deny challenges; it considers them in the light of God's power and faithfulness.

5. PUT ON THE NEW MAN AND LIVE A TRANSFORMED LIFE

The purpose of renewing the mind is not merely to feel better or think more positively. It is to become increasingly like Christ. Ephesians 4:24 commands believers to put on the new man, created according to God in righteousness and true holiness.

A renewed mind must produce visible changes in our conduct. We should become more truthful, more loving, more disciplined, more forgiving and more committed to God's will.

a) Put on the new man (Ephesians 4:24)

The new man describes the new life believers receive in Christ. We are called to live according to our new identity rather than continue practising the sinful habits of our former life.

Do not allow yesterday's failures to become your permanent identity. In Christ, you can repent, receive forgiveness and grow into a life that honours God.

b) Speak words that build others (Ephesians 4:29)

A renewed mind influences the mouth. Instead of using words to destroy, insult or discourage, believers should speak what is helpful for building others up.

Before you speak, ask whether your words are truthful, necessary, gracious and beneficial. A transformed tongue often reveals a transformed inner life.

c) Practise forgiveness and kindness (Ephesians 4:32)

A renewed mind remembers the mercy God has shown us and learns to extend mercy to others. Forgiveness may take time, but we must refuse to nurture hatred or seek revenge.

Choose kindness even when it is difficult. Let the character of Christ guide your response to disappointment, misunderstanding and offence.

d) Continue growing every day (2 Corinthians 4:16)

Paul reminds believers that although the outward person is wasting away, the inward person can be renewed day by day. Renewal is a continuing process, not a single emotional experience.

Maintain a consistent life of prayer, Bible study, fellowship, obedience and self-examination. When you stumble, repent and return to the Lord. Keep allowing Him to shape your thinking and conduct.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10)

After encountering Jesus, Zacchaeus demonstrated a change of heart through his willingness to give to the poor and make restitution to those he had wronged. His actions showed that a genuine encounter with Christ can affect attitudes towards possessions, justice and other people.

CONCLUSION

Being renewed in the spirit of your mind is essential to a fruitful Christian life. God wants to transform not only what people see outwardly but also the thoughts, motives and attitudes that shape your behaviour. Through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, you can reject destructive patterns, overcome ungodly influences and develop the mind of Christ. Do not allow your past, your environment or the opinions of others to become the final authority over your thinking.

Make a fresh commitment to read and obey God's Word, guard your thoughts, pray consistently and respond to correction with humility. Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind daily and help you put on the new man in righteousness and holiness. As your thinking changes in line with God's truth, let that change become visible in your words, relationships, decisions and service to God.
