Key Verse: “May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;” (Ephesians 3:18, KJV).

Description: This message reveals the immeasurable dimensions of Christ’s love and challenges believers to understand, experience, and demonstrate His love in their daily lives.

INTRODUCTION

The love of Christ is one of the greatest revelations in the Christian faith. It is a love that surpasses human understanding, transcends human limitations, and remains steadfast despite our weaknesses and failures. Many believers know that Jesus loves them, but not everyone has fully comprehended the magnitude, depth, and transforming power of His love. To comprehend the love of Christ is to grow in the knowledge of how deeply He loves us and how that love should influence our relationship with God and other people.

In Ephesians 3:14-21, the Apostle Paul bows his knees before the Father and prays that believers will be strengthened with might by the Holy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ will dwell in their hearts by faith, and that they will be rooted and grounded in love. He then prays that they may comprehend with all saints the breadth, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love. Paul recognises that this revelation is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is a spiritual experience that requires the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s heart.

In a world where love is often conditional, selfish, temporary, and influenced by personal interests, the love of Christ stands out as perfect, sacrificial, unchanging, and everlasting. Understanding this love gives us security in difficult times, courage in the face of opposition, hope in seasons of discouragement, and grace to love people who may not deserve our affection. When we comprehend the love of Christ, we are transformed from people who merely receive love into people who demonstrate His love to the world.

1. UNDERSTAND THE BREADTH OF CHRIST’S LOVE

The breadth of Christ’s love speaks of its wide reach. His love is not restricted by nationality, tribe, social status, education, financial position, past mistakes, or human background. Jesus did not come merely for a selected group of people; He came to make salvation available to all who believe in Him.

The breadth of His love reminds us that nobody is beyond the reach of His saving grace. The Church must therefore reflect this love by welcoming people, reaching the lost, showing compassion, and refusing to discriminate against those whom Christ desires to save.

a) His Love Reaches All Nations (John 3:16)

John 3:16 declares that God loved the world and gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. The word “world” reveals the extensive reach of God's redemptive love. God’s invitation is not limited to one nation or ethnic group.

Christ’s love reaches people from every nation, tribe, language, and background. No one should be rejected because of where they come from, and no believer should consider any group of people unworthy of hearing the Gospel. Our responsibility is to proclaim Christ to everyone and allow the power of the Gospel to transform lives.

b) His Love Reaches the Worst of Sinners (Romans 5:8)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, KJV).

Christ did not wait for us to become righteous before demonstrating His love. He loved us while we were still sinners. His love reached us in our rebellion, guilt, spiritual blindness, and separation from God.

This truth gives hope to anyone struggling with a sinful past. Your past may explain where you have been, but it does not have to determine where God’s grace can take you. Genuine repentance and faith in Christ open the way to forgiveness, cleansing, and a transformed life.

c) His Love Welcomes the Rejected (Luke 19:5-10)

Jesus saw Zacchaeus, a tax collector despised by many, and chose to enter his house. While the crowd complained, Jesus extended an invitation that brought salvation to Zacchaeus and his household.

People may label someone according to past failures, but Christ sees the possibility of transformation through His grace. We must not allow human prejudice to prevent us from showing the love of Christ. The Church should be a place where sinners hear the truth, encounter grace, repent, and become disciples of Jesus.

d) His Love Unites Believers Beyond Human Barriers (Galatians 3:28)

The Gospel establishes a new spiritual identity in Christ that transcends the divisions of race, social standing, and background. Although our earthly differences remain, none should become a reason for hatred or superiority among believers.

The breadth of Christ’s love calls us to unity, fellowship, and mutual respect. We cannot claim to comprehend His love while deliberately nurturing prejudice, tribalism, bitterness, or hostility against people for whom Christ died.

Biblical Example: The Samaritan Woman (John 4:7-30, 39-42)

Jesus crossed cultural, religious, and social barriers to speak with the Samaritan woman. He addressed her spiritual condition and revealed Himself as the Messiah. The woman became a witness, and many Samaritans believed because of her testimony. This demonstrates that Christ’s love reaches beyond the boundaries people create.

2. UNDERSTAND THE LENGTH OF CHRIST’S LOVE

The length of Christ’s love speaks of its enduring nature. Human love may change because of disappointment, distance, betrayal, or changing circumstances. Christ’s love, however, is not temporary affection. His faithfulness extends through every season of life and throughout eternity.

This does not mean that God approves of sin or that believers can ignore the call to obedience. Rather, His love remains the foundation of His faithful dealings with us, calling us to repentance, restoration, holiness, and continued fellowship with Him.

a) His Love Is Everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3)

“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” (Jeremiah 31:3, KJV).

Everlasting love is love that does not expire with time. God’s love is not a temporary arrangement that ends when our circumstances become difficult. He remains faithful to His character and His promises.

When you pass through seasons of uncertainty, remember that your circumstances do not determine the faithfulness of God. You may not understand everything He permits, but you can continue to trust His character, seek His guidance, and hold firmly to His Word.

b) His Love Remains Through Life’s Changing Seasons (Romans 8:38-39)

Paul declares his confidence that neither death, life, angels, principalities, powers, present things, nor things to come can separate believers from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Life changes, people change, and opportunities may disappear, but the love of Christ remains a secure foundation for those who belong to Him. His love gives us courage to face tomorrow without surrendering to fear.

This assurance does not promise a trouble-free life. Instead, it assures us that suffering, opposition, and hardship cannot overpower God’s love or separate faithful believers from His love in Christ.

c) His Love Pursues the Lost (Luke 15:4-7)

In the parable of the lost sheep, the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine in the wilderness and goes after the one that is lost until he finds it. The story reveals the value God places on those who have wandered away.

The love of Christ does not treat lost people as disposable. It seeks their restoration and rejoices when they repent. As believers, we should not give up too quickly on those who have strayed from the faith. We must pray for them, speak the truth in love, and lovingly encourage their return to God.

d) His Love Calls Us to Continue in His Word (John 15:9-10)

Jesus tells His disciples to abide in His love and connects this abiding with keeping His commandments. His love is the foundation of our relationship with Him, while obedience is a practical expression of our continuing fellowship with Him.

We must not confuse the permanence of Christ’s love with permission to live carelessly. The more we comprehend His love, the more we desire to obey Him, honour His Word, and remain faithful to His purpose for our lives.

Biblical Example: Peter’s Restoration (John 21:15-19)

Peter denied Jesus three times, but after His resurrection, Jesus restored him through a personal conversation and recommissioned him to care for His sheep. Peter’s failure was serious, yet it was not beyond the reach of Christ’s restoring grace. This demonstrates that Christ can restore repentant believers and use them again for His glory.

3. UNDERSTAND THE DEPTH OF CHRIST’S LOVE

The depth of Christ’s love is revealed in the extent to which He humbled Himself and sacrificed His life for our redemption. He did not love us from a safe distance. He entered our human condition, experienced suffering, bore our sins, and endured the cross to reconcile us to God.

The cross is the clearest demonstration that Christ’s love is sacrificial. It reveals the seriousness of sin, the holiness of God, and the extraordinary cost of our redemption. We cannot fully comprehend the depth of His love without considering what He willingly endured for us.

a) He Came Down to Our Level (Philippians 2:6-8)

Although Jesus existed in the form of God, He humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

The Creator entered His creation. The Lord of glory took the position of a servant. The One who deserved worship accepted humiliation for the purpose of redeeming humanity. His incarnation reveals the depth of His willingness to come near to us.

This teaches us that genuine love is not proud or self-centred. It is willing to serve, sacrifice, and put the welfare of others before personal convenience when doing so honours God.

b) He Bore Our Sins on the Cross (1 Peter 2:24)

Peter explains that Christ bore our sins in His own body on the tree so that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. His death was not merely an example of courage; it was central to God’s provision for our redemption.

The cross shows us the terrible weight of sin and the immeasurable cost of forgiveness. Jesus took the path of suffering so that those who trust in Him could receive forgiveness and be reconciled to God.

We must never treat sin lightly when we consider what it cost Christ to redeem us. The proper response to His sacrifice is repentance, gratitude, holiness, and a life dedicated to His service.

c) He Loved Us When We Could Not Save Ourselves (Romans 5:6-8)

Paul explains that Christ died for the ungodly at the appointed time. Human beings could not rescue themselves from sin by their own goodness, religious activities, or personal achievements.

Christ’s love met us in our helplessness. We were unable to establish our own righteousness before God, but Jesus provided the way of salvation through His death and resurrection. We receive this salvation by grace through faith, not by boasting in our own merit.

This truth destroys pride and produces gratitude. No believer can rightly boast as though salvation were a personal accomplishment. We stand accepted before God because of what Christ has done for us.

d) He Demonstrated the Greatest Expression of Love (John 15:13)

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13, KJV).

Jesus gave Himself for us. His sacrifice establishes the highest standard of love: a willingness to give sacrificially for the good of others. The cross is not only the foundation of our salvation; it is also a pattern that shapes how we treat people.

We may not be called to die physically for another person, but we are called to demonstrate sacrificial love through service, generosity, forgiveness, compassion, and faithfulness. Our lives should show that we have been touched by the love that brought Jesus to the cross.

Biblical Example: The Father’s Welcome to the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-24)

When the younger son returned home after wasting his inheritance, the father saw him from afar, had compassion, ran to him, embraced him, and welcomed him home. The parable illustrates the joy of restoration when a sinner returns in repentance. It does not remove the seriousness of the son’s rebellion; it reveals the father’s readiness to receive him. In an even greater way, Christ’s saving work opens the way for repentant sinners to return to God.

4. UNDERSTAND THE HEIGHT OF CHRIST’S LOVE

The height of Christ’s love points us towards the greatness of the spiritual blessings and heavenly hope that He has made available to believers. Through His saving work, Christ brings us into fellowship with God and gives us a hope that reaches beyond the limitations of this present life.

His love lifts us out of condemnation and spiritual alienation into a new relationship with the Father. It directs our attention towards eternal life, our heavenly calling, and the glorious future God has prepared for those who belong to Christ.

a) His Love Brings Us into Fellowship with God (Ephesians 2:13)

Paul reminds believers that those who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Sin separated humanity from God, but Christ’s sacrifice provides the way of reconciliation.

We are not required to remain spiritually distant from God because of our former condition. Through repentance and faith in Jesus, we can draw near to the Father, worship Him, receive His Word, and walk in fellowship with Him.

b) His Love Gives Us a Living Hope (1 Peter 1:3-4)

Peter praises God for giving believers a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and an incorruptible inheritance reserved in heaven.

The love of Christ gives us a hope that circumstances cannot destroy. Earthly possessions can perish, human relationships can change, and achievements can fade, but the inheritance God has promised His people is secure in Him.

This hope enables us to live faithfully in the present. We can endure trials, remain committed to Christ, and refuse to allow temporary disappointments to rob us of our eternal perspective.

c) His Love Makes Us Children of God (1 John 3:1)

John marvels at the love of the Father in making believers His children. Through Christ, those who receive Him are brought into a new relationship with God and become members of His family.

This identity should change the way we think about ourselves. We must not allow rejection, failure, or the opinions of people to become the final definition of our worth. Our identity is grounded in God’s grace and our relationship with Him through Christ.

As children of God, we must also reflect the character of our Father. We should pursue holiness, show compassion, practise forgiveness, and represent His kingdom faithfully in our homes, churches, workplaces, and communities.

d) His Love Leads Us Towards Eternal Glory (Romans 8:17-18)

Paul teaches that believers are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, while acknowledging that suffering in the present time cannot be compared with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Christianity does not promise that every believer will escape hardship. Rather, it assures us that suffering is not the final chapter of our story. Christ’s love gives us strength to remain faithful while we await the fulfilment of God’s promises.

We must therefore live with eternity in view. Our choices, priorities, service, and use of resources should reflect the truth that we belong to Christ and are looking forward to the glory He has promised.

Biblical Example: The Thief on the Cross (Luke 23:39-43)

One of the criminals crucified beside Jesus acknowledged his guilt and appealed to Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus responded with a promise of paradise. This account reveals the saving power of Christ’s grace even at the end of a person's earthly life when there is genuine repentance and faith. It points beyond present suffering towards the hope found in Christ.

5. RECEIVE THE LOVE OF CHRIST THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT

The love of Christ is not fully comprehended through intellectual ability alone. Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 shows that spiritual strengthening and the work of the Holy Spirit are essential to our growth in this revelation. We need God to illuminate our hearts so that the truth we read in Scripture becomes a living reality in our experience.

The Holy Spirit helps us understand the Word, assures us of God’s love, and transforms our character. As we grow in prayer, worship, obedience, and fellowship with God, our understanding of Christ’s love becomes deeper and more practical.

a) Pray for Spiritual Understanding (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Paul prayed that believers would be strengthened by the Spirit and enabled to comprehend the dimensions of Christ’s love. His prayer reminds us that spiritual understanding should be pursued intentionally.

Do not settle for merely hearing about the love of Christ. Ask God to help you understand it more deeply through His Word and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Pray for a heart that is sensitive to His truth and willing to respond to His leading.

b) Allow the Word of God to Renew Your Mind (Romans 12:2)

The Word of God corrects false beliefs, renews our thinking, and teaches us to see life from God’s perspective. Many people struggle to believe that God loves them because they judge His character only by their painful experiences.

As we meditate on Scripture, we learn to distinguish between our changing circumstances and the unchanging truth of God’s character. His Word helps us reject condemnation, overcome destructive thinking, and rest in the promises He has revealed.

c) Let the Holy Spirit Pour God’s Love into Your Heart (Romans 5:5)

Paul declares that the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost given unto us. The Spirit makes the reality of God’s love increasingly evident in our lives.

This assurance does not mean we will never experience emotional struggles or unanswered questions. It means that our confidence in God can grow beyond our feelings as the Spirit uses the Word to strengthen our hearts and deepen our trust in Christ.

d) Grow Through Fellowship with God (Jude 1: 20-21)

Jude encourages believers to build themselves up on their most holy faith, pray in the Holy Ghost, and keep themselves in the love of God while looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Prayer, worship, Scripture meditation, and fellowship with other believers help us remain spiritually alert and mature in our faith. These practices do not earn Christ’s love; they help us grow in our understanding of Him and respond faithfully to His grace.

Biblical Example: The Disciples on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4, 14-41)

After the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, Peter boldly proclaimed the Gospel, and many people responded to his message. The disciples moved from fear and uncertainty to Spirit-empowered witness. Their experience illustrates how the Holy Spirit equips believers to understand God’s purposes more clearly and communicate the message of Christ with courage.

6. DEMONSTRATE THE LOVE OF CHRIST TO OTHERS

Comprehending Christ’s love must produce a visible change in our conduct. We cannot genuinely claim to understand His sacrificial love while remaining deliberately cruel, unforgiving, selfish, or indifferent to the suffering of others.

The love we receive from Christ must flow through us to our families, fellow believers, neighbours, and even those who oppose us. Our love for others does not replace the truth of Scripture; rather, it expresses that truth with compassion, patience, humility, and a sincere desire for their good.

a) Love Others as Christ Has Loved You (John 13:34-35)

Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another as He had loved them. He also declared that their love would be evidence by which people would recognise them as His disciples.

Christian love must be more than words or public declarations. It should be seen in our conduct, our patience with others, our willingness to serve, and our concern for people who cannot repay us.

b) Forgive Those Who Have Offended You (Ephesians 4:32)

Paul instructs believers to be kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven them. The forgiveness we have received becomes the pattern for the forgiveness we extend.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened, excusing abuse, or abandoning appropriate boundaries. It means refusing to nurture vengeance and bitterness while seeking a response that honours God. Where necessary, reconciliation should be pursued with wisdom, truth, and safety.

c) Serve Others with Humility (Galatians 5:13)

Paul teaches that believers should use their liberty to serve one another through love. The love of Christ frees us from living only for personal ambition and self-interest.

A person who comprehends Christ’s love will look for practical ways to help others. This may involve visiting the sick, encouraging the discouraged, supporting the needy, mentoring younger believers, or quietly performing acts of service without seeking recognition.

d) Love Even Those Who Oppose You (Matthew 5:44)

Jesus commands His followers to love their enemies, bless those who curse them, do good to those who hate them, and pray for those who persecute them.

This is one of the clearest tests of Christlike love. It does not require us to approve of wrongdoing or remain in dangerous situations. It calls us to reject hatred and revenge, pray for those who oppose us, and respond in ways consistent with the character of Jesus.

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37)

The Samaritan helped a wounded man whom others had passed by. He treated his injuries, took him to an inn, and provided for his care. His compassion crossed social boundaries and became practical assistance. This illustrates that the love of Christ must move us beyond religious talk into meaningful acts of mercy and service.

CONCLUSION

The love of Christ is wider than our human boundaries, longer than our changing seasons, deeper than our failures, and higher than our present circumstances. At the cross, we see the depth of His sacrifice; in His faithfulness, we see the length of His love; in His welcome to all who believe, we see its breadth; and in the hope of eternal life, we glimpse its height. Yet this love is so great that our understanding of it must continue to grow throughout our Christian journey. We must therefore pray, study the Word, depend on the Holy Spirit, and remain rooted and grounded in Christ.

Today, let every believer move beyond merely knowing that Jesus loves us to living in the reality of His love. Receive His love through faith, allow it to heal your heart, let it transform your character, and demonstrate it through forgiveness, compassion, service, holiness, and faithful witness. If you have not surrendered your life to Christ, respond to His invitation today through repentance and faith. If you are already a believer, ask God to deepen your understanding of Christ’s love until your life becomes a testimony of His grace to everyone around you.
