INTRODUCTION:
Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly reminds His people to remember His mighty acts and deliverances in their lives. Forgetting where we came from can lead to pride, self-reliance, and spiritual complacency. Remembering our past reminds us of God’s faithfulness, grace, and mercy. It keeps us humble and grateful, fuelling our devotion and trust in Him. In this study, we will explore why it’s vital to remember where God brought us from and how it influences our spiritual journey.
1. REMEMBERING PROMOTES GRATITUDE
When we remember God’s goodness and deliverance, it cultivates a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving.
a) Gratitude for Salvation
Recall how God saved you from a life of sin and darkness (Ephesians 2:1-5).
b) Gratitude for His Faithfulness
Remembering God’s faithfulness in past trials strengthens our confidence in Him (Psalm 103:2).
c) Gratitude in Worship
Reflecting on God’s past deeds fills our worship with sincerity and joy (Psalm 103:1-2).
d) Gratitude Leads to Humility
When we recall what God saved us from, it humbles us, realising we owe everything to Him (1 Corinthians 1:30-31).
Biblical Example:
David often remembered God’s deliverance and gave thanks, as seen in Psalm 40:1-3.
2. REMEMBERING HELPS US STAY HUMBLE
Reflecting on God’s deliverance prevents pride and reminds us that our strength and righteousness come from Him alone.
a) Humility in Recognition of Our Weakness
We are reminded of our dependence on God (2 Corinthians 12:9).
b) Humility in Accepting His Grace
Knowing we didn’t earn His mercy keeps us humble (Ephesians 2:8-9).
c) Resisting Spiritual Pride
By remembering where God found us, we resist pride and judgment of others (Luke 18:9-14).
d) Living in God’s Strength
We rely not on our power but on His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).
Biblical Example:
Paul always remembered his past and declared himself as "the chief of sinners," humbled by God’s grace (1 Timothy 1:15).
3. REMEMBERING INSPIRES OBEDIENCE AND COMMITMENT
Recalling God’s faithfulness motivates us to live in obedience and to follow Him with renewed dedication.
a) Inspires Obedience
When we remember His acts, we are inspired to obey His commands (Deuteronomy 8:2).
b) Commitment to Serve
We become more committed to serving Him, knowing His great love for us (Romans 12:1).
c) Motivated by His Sacrifice
Reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice compels us to live worthy lives (2 Corinthians 5:14-15).
d) Strengthened in Faithfulness
Knowing what He’s done for us helps us stay faithful (Psalm 103:17-18).
Biblical Example:
Israel was often instructed to remember God’s deliverance from Egypt as motivation for obedience (Exodus 13:3).
4. REMEMBERING STRENGTHENS OUR FAITH
Recalling past experiences with God builds our trust, especially when facing new challenges.
a) Faith in Future Challenges
Remembering past victories strengthens our faith for present trials (Psalm 77:11).
b) Encouragement in Difficult Times
God’s past deliverance reminds us that He is still able (Isaiah 46:9-10).
c) Confidence in God’s Promises
Knowing God’s faithfulness in the past gives us confidence in His promises (Psalm 105:8-10).
d) Protection from Fear and Doubt
We are reassured of His presence and power (Psalm 118:6).
Biblical Example:
David recalled God’s past help with the lion and bear to face Goliath with faith (1 Samuel 17:34-37).
5. REMEMBERING HELPS US TESTIFY TO OTHERS
Our testimony of God’s work in our lives can be a powerful tool to encourage others and lead them to Christ.
a) Sharing Our Testimony
Remembering allows us to testify of God’s goodness and grace (1 Peter 3:15).
b) Glorifying God
Our testimonies bring glory to God and draw others to Him (Psalm 105:1-2).
c) Encouraging Fellow Believers
Sharing how God brought us out of tough times strengthens the faith of others (Psalm 34:4-6).
d) Witnessing to Non-Believers
A life transformed by God’s power is a powerful witness to the world (1 Peter 2:9).
Biblical Example:
The Samaritan woman shared her story, leading many in her town to believe in Jesus (John 4:28-30, 39-42).
