THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUE LOVE

Description: True Christian love is not merely an emotion, a declaration, or an occasional act of kindness. It is a Christlike character expressed through patience, kindness, humility, selflessness, forgiveness, truthfulness, endurance, and sacrificial commitment. First Corinthians 13:4-7 provides a practical portrait of the love God desires His children to demonstrate.
INTRODUCTION
The world often defines love by feelings, attraction, personal benefits, or favourable circumstances. Biblical love, however, is much deeper. It is a deliberate commitment to seek the good of another person and to demonstrate the character of Christ, even when doing so requires patience, sacrifice, forgiveness, and endurance.
Paul's description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 is not primarily a list of pleasant emotions; it is a description of behaviour. He tells us what love does and what love refuses to do. Love is patient and kind, but it is not envious, boastful, proud, rude, selfish, easily provoked, or resentful.
Therefore, the characteristics of true love must become visible in our daily lives. It should be seen in our marriages, families, friendships, churches, workplaces, and ministries. A person may speak beautifully about love, but the true test is whether his or her conduct reflects the love of Christ.
1. TRUE LOVE IS PATIENT
Patience is one of the first characteristics Paul gives to love.
a) Love Suffers Long (1 Corinthians 13:4)
True love does not quickly abandon people because of their weaknesses or failures.
b) Love Allows Room For Growth (Ephesians 4:2)
People require time and grace to mature.
c) Love Is Slow To Anger (James 1:19)
Patience controls impulsive reactions.
d) Love Reflects God's Patience (2 Peter 3:9)
God's patience towards us should teach us to be patient with others.
Biblical Example: Jesus patiently endured the weaknesses and misunderstandings of His disciples (Mark 9:32-34).
2. TRUE LOVE IS KIND
Love does not merely avoid hurting people; it actively seeks to bless them.
a) Love Is Kind (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Kindness is a practical expression of love.
b) Love Looks For Opportunities To Do Good (Galatians 6:10)
A loving person intentionally seeks opportunities to bless others.
c) Love Speaks Gracefully (Proverbs 16:24)
Kind words can strengthen wounded hearts.
d) Love Shows Compassion (Ephesians 4:32)
True love responds to the needs and weaknesses of others with compassion.
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan showed practical kindness to a wounded stranger (Luke 10:30-37).
3. TRUE LOVE IS FREE FROM ENVY
Love does not resent another person's success.
a) Love Envieth Not (1 Corinthians 13:4)
Love does not become unhappy because someone else is blessed.
b) Love Celebrates Others (Romans 12:15)
It rejoices with those who rejoice.
c) Love Rejects Competition (Galatians 5:26)
Love does not seek to outshine or diminish others.
d) Love Trusts God's Plan (Psalm 75:6-7)
It recognises that promotion ultimately comes from God.
Biblical Example: Jonathan loved David and supported him even when David's future kingship meant Jonathan would not become king (1 Samuel 18:1-4; 20:30-42).
4. TRUE LOVE IS HUMBLE
Love does not use success, knowledge, wealth, position, or spiritual gifts to elevate itself.
a) Love Does Not Boast (1 Corinthians 13:4)
It does not constantly advertise its accomplishments.
b) Love Is Not Puffed Up (1 Corinthians 13:4)
It refuses to become arrogant.
c) Love Esteems Others (Philippians 2:3)
It recognises the value and contribution of others.
d) Love Follows Christ's Example (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus demonstrated supreme humility by becoming a servant.
Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet despite being their Lord and Master (John 13:3-15).
5. TRUE LOVE IS RESPECTFUL AND SELFLESS
Love considers how its behaviour affects others.
a) Love Does Not Behave Rudely (1 Corinthians 13:5)
It treats people with dignity.
b) Love Does Not Seek Its Own (1 Corinthians 13:5)
It is not driven by selfish interests.
c) Love Considers Others (Philippians 2:4)
It pays attention to the needs and feelings of others.
d) Love Serves Others (Mark 10:45)
Jesus showed that greatness is expressed through service.
Biblical Example: Jesus served His disciples by washing their feet (John 13:12-17).
6. TRUE LOVE CONTROLS ANGER
The love life is especially tested during conflict.
a) Love Is Not Easily Provoked (1 Corinthians 13:5)
It does not react violently or impulsively.
b) Love Is Slow To Wrath (James 1:19-20)
It chooses restraint instead of uncontrolled anger.
c) Love Does Not Seek Revenge (Romans 12:19)
It leaves vengeance to God.
d) Love Overcomes Evil With Good (Romans 12:21)
It refuses to allow another person's wrongdoing to determine its character.
Biblical Example: David refused to kill Saul even when Saul sought his life (1 Samuel 24:4-7).
7. TRUE LOVE FORGIVES
Love does not maintain a permanent record of offences.
a) Love Thinks No Evil (1 Corinthians 13:5)
It does not continually calculate or preserve wrongs committed against it.
b) Love Forgives Others (Colossians 3:13)
Believers are called to forgive because God has forgiven them.
c) Love Releases Bitterness (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Forgiveness prevents resentment from controlling the heart.
d) Love Seeks Restoration (Galatians 6:1)
Where appropriate, love seeks to restore rather than destroy.
Biblical Example: Joseph forgave his brothers and refused to repay their evil with revenge (Genesis 50:15-21).
8. TRUE LOVE REJOICES IN TRUTH
Love does not celebrate sin or compromise.
a) Love Does Not Rejoice In Iniquity (1 Corinthians 13:6)
True love never celebrates wrongdoing.
b) Love Rejoices In Truth (1 Corinthians 13:6)
It delights in honesty, righteousness, and God's Word.
c) Love Corrects When Necessary (Proverbs 27:5-6)
Faithful correction can be an expression of genuine love.
d) Love Walks In Truth (3 John 3-4)
The life of a believer should reflect both love and truth.
Biblical Example: Nathan confronted David about his sin, leading the king to acknowledge his wrongdoing (2 Samuel 12:1-13).
9. TRUE LOVE BEARS, BELIEVES, HOPES, AND ENDURES
Love remains steadfast through difficult circumstances.
a) Love Bears All Things (1 Corinthians 13:7)
It carries burdens and remains committed to doing good.
b) Love Believes All Things (1 Corinthians 13:7)
It does not habitually assume the worst about people.
c) Love Hopes All Things (1 Corinthians 13:7)
It believes that God can bring change and restoration.
d) Love Endures All Things (1 Corinthians 13:7)
It remains faithful through difficulties.
Biblical Example: Paul continued serving Christ despite persecution, rejection, hardship, and suffering (2 Corinthians 11:23-28).
10. TRUE LOVE REFLECTS GOD
The ultimate source and standard of Christian love is God Himself.
a) God Is Love (1 John 4:8)
Love is central to God's revealed character.
b) God Demonstrated His Love (Romans 5:8)
God showed His love by giving Christ for sinners.
c) Christ Is Our Example (Ephesians 5:2)
Jesus demonstrated sacrificial love.
d) Believers Must Walk In Love (Ephesians 5:2)
Those who have received God's love are called to demonstrate it.
CONCLUSION
The characteristics of true love are practical and observable. True love is patient when people are difficult, kind when others are hurting, humble when it could boast, selfless when it could demand its rights, forgiving when it has been offended, truthful when compromise is tempting, and enduring when circumstances become difficult.
As followers of Christ, we are called not merely to speak about love but to embody it. Let the love of Christ govern your marriage, family, friendships, ministry, and relationship with those who disagree with you. When true love becomes the character of your life, people will not merely hear that you belong to Christ; they will see Christ through you.

7. Father, help me to love truth and righteousness and never celebrate or participate in wrongdoing, in Jesus name.
8. Lord, give me grace to bear, believe, hope, and endure according to the standard of Your Word, in Jesus name.
9. Father, let the characteristics of true love be evident in my marriage, family, relationships, and ministry, in Jesus name.
10. Lord, make my life a clear reflection of the love of Jesus Christ to everyone I encounter, in Jesus name.
PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS
1. The love of God shall fill your heart and transform your character.
2. You shall receive grace to walk in patience and kindness every day.
3. Every root of envy, jealousy, pride, and selfishness shall be uprooted from your life.
4. You shall walk in humility and consider the interests of others above selfish ambition.
5. You shall overcome anger, bitterness, resentment, and the desire for revenge.
6. You shall receive grace to forgive quickly and completely.
7. You shall love truth and righteousness and reject every form of ungodly compromise.
8. You shall have grace to endure difficult seasons without losing your love, faith, or hope.
9. Your home and relationships shall become channels through which the love of Christ flows.
10. Your life shall display the characteristics of true love, reveal the character of Christ, and bring glory to God, in Jesus name.
