THE LETTER KILLS BUT THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE

INTRODUCTION

Paul’s statement that “the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life” is not a declaration that the Word of God is bad or that Scripture should be ignored. Rather, Paul is contrasting the old covenant written on tablets of stone with the New Covenant ministry of the Holy Spirit, who writes God’s will upon the hearts of believers and gives them the power to live for God.

The law reveals what is right and exposes what is wrong, but it cannot by itself transform a sinful heart. It can tell a person what God requires, but it cannot provide the inward power necessary to fulfil God’s will. The Spirit, however, brings new birth, changes the heart and enables believers to walk in obedience.

Therefore, Christianity is not merely about possessing biblical information. A person can know Scripture intellectually and still remain unchanged. God desires His Word to move from the pages of Scripture into the heart through the work of the Holy Spirit. The letter informs, but the Spirit transforms; the letter exposes the problem, but the Spirit provides life.

1. THE LETTER REVEALS GOD’S STANDARD

God’s law is holy, righteous and good. Its purpose includes revealing God’s standard and showing humanity the seriousness of sin.

a. The Law Reveals Sin (Romans 3:20) — The law brings knowledge of sin by showing people where they fall short of God’s righteous standard.

b. God’s Law Is Holy (Romans 7:12) — The problem is not with God’s law; the problem is the sinful nature of humanity.

c. Scripture Teaches What Is Right (2 Timothy 3:16-17) — God’s Word instructs, corrects and equips believers for righteous living.

d. The Law Points People Towards Christ (Galatians 3:24) — The law functions as a tutor that points sinners towards their need for Christ.

Biblical Example: The law revealed Israel’s responsibility to obey God, but repeated disobedience showed the weakness of external commands to transform the human heart — Nehemiah 9:16-17.

2. THE LETTER CANNOT TRANSFORM THE HUMAN HEART

Knowledge of commandments does not automatically produce obedience. The heart requires an inward work that only God can accomplish through His Spirit.

a. External Rules Cannot Change the Heart (Matthew 23:25-28) — Jesus condemned religious hypocrisy because outward appearance can conceal inward corruption.

b. The Flesh Is Weak (Romans 8:3) — The law was weakened by humanity’s sinful nature, not because the law itself was defective.

c. Human Effort Cannot Produce Spiritual Life (John 3:6) — What is born of the flesh remains flesh; spiritual life requires spiritual birth.

d. God Promises a New Heart (Ezekiel 36:26) — God promised to remove the heart of stone and give His people a heart that is responsive to Him.

Biblical Example: The Pharisees knew the Scriptures but often missed the heart of God’s commandments, prompting Jesus to confront their outward religion — Matthew 23:23-28.

3. THE SPIRIT GIVES SPIRITUAL LIFE

The Holy Spirit does what human effort cannot do. He brings new birth, makes Christ real to believers and empowers them to live according to God’s will.

a. The Spirit Gives Life (2 Corinthians 3:6) — Spiritual life comes through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

b. The Spirit Produces New Birth (John 3:5-8) — Jesus taught that entrance into God’s kingdom requires being born of the Spirit.

c. The Spirit Makes Us Alive in Christ (Romans 8:11) — The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead gives life to believers.

d. The Spirit Empowers Holy Living (Galatians 5:16) — Walking in the Spirit enables believers to overcome the desires of the flesh.

Biblical Example: The disciples were transformed from fearful followers into bold witnesses after the Holy Spirit came upon them — Acts 2:1-4, 14-41.

4. THE SPIRIT WRITES GOD’S WORD UPON THE HEART

Under the New Covenant, God does not merely place commandments before His people; He works within them so that His will becomes increasingly written upon their hearts.

a. God Writes His Law Within Us (Jeremiah 31:33) — The New Covenant includes an inward work where God puts His law within the hearts of His people.

b. The Spirit Changes the Inner Person (2 Corinthians 3:18) — The Holy Spirit progressively transforms believers into the likeness of Christ.

c. Obedience Becomes An Inward Response (Ezekiel 36:27) — God promises to put His Spirit within His people and cause them to walk in His statutes.

d. God Works From the Inside Out (Philippians 2:13) — God works within believers both to desire and to accomplish what pleases Him.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus encountered Jesus and demonstrated inward transformation through a changed attitude towards possessions and restitution — Luke 19:1-10.

5. THE SPIRIT BRINGS FREEDOM FROM LEGALISM

The New Covenant does not call believers into careless living, but it frees them from attempting to earn righteousness through religious performance.

a. Believers Serve in the Newness of the Spirit (Romans 7:6) — Christians serve God from a transformed heart rather than merely following external regulations.

b. Christ Brings Freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17) — Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

c. Righteousness Comes Through Faith in Christ (Romans 3:21-22) — God’s righteousness is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

d. Grace Produces Obedience (Titus 2:11-12) — Grace does not encourage lawlessness; it teaches believers to reject ungodliness and live righteously.

Biblical Example: The early Church learned that Gentile believers were not required to become Jews in order to be saved but were saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus — Acts 15:7-11.

6. THE SPIRIT ENABLES US TO LIVE THE WORD

The Holy Spirit does not replace Scripture. Rather, He enables believers to understand, apply and obey the Word of God.

a. The Spirit Teaches Truth (John 14:26) — The Holy Spirit teaches believers and brings Christ’s words to their remembrance.

b. The Word and Spirit Work Together (Ephesians 6:17) — The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, showing the close relationship between Scripture and the Spirit.

c. Spiritual Understanding Comes From God (1 Corinthians 2:12-14) — The Spirit enables believers to understand spiritual realities.

d. Obedience Demonstrates Genuine Faith (James 1:22) — Believers must not merely hear the Word but put it into practice.

Biblical Example: Philip was directed by the Holy Spirit to explain Isaiah’s prophecy to the Ethiopian official, leading him to faith in Christ — Acts 8:26-39.

7. THE SPIRIT PRODUCES THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN US

The ultimate work of the Spirit is not merely to give information but to transform believers so that the character of Christ becomes increasingly visible in their lives.

a. The Spirit Produces Fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) — Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and other spiritual qualities are evidence of the Spirit’s work.

b. We Are Transformed Into Christ’s Image (2 Corinthians 3:18) — The Spirit progressively changes believers into the likeness of Christ.

c. The Mind Is Renewed (Romans 12:2) — Spiritual transformation includes the renewal of the mind so that believers can discern God’s will.

d. Christ Lives Through Us (Galatians 2:20) — The Christian life is increasingly characterised by dependence upon Christ rather than self-effort.

Biblical Example: Barnabas was described as a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and his life produced spiritual fruit in others — Acts 11:22-24.

CONCLUSION

“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” teaches us that external commandments cannot produce the inward transformation that God desires. The law exposes sin and reveals God’s standard, but the New Covenant brings the transforming ministry of the Holy Spirit. Through Christ, believers receive new life, a new heart and divine power to walk according to God’s will.

Therefore, do not settle for merely knowing the Word; ask the Holy Spirit to make the Word alive in your heart and visible in your conduct. May the Spirit of God move beyond information into transformation, beyond religious performance into genuine obedience, and beyond external appearance into a life that reflects Jesus Christ.

1. Father, let the Holy Spirit give me fresh spiritual life and strength, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, write Your Word deeply upon my heart and make me obedient to Your will, in Jesus name.

3. Father, deliver me from legalism and every form of empty religious performance, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, transform my heart and remove everything that resists Your purpose in my life, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give me spiritual understanding whenever I study Your Word, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, empower me to live according to the truth I have received from Scripture, in Jesus name.

7. Father, let the fruit of the Holy Spirit become increasingly evident in my life, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, renew my mind and conform my life to the image of Christ, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let Your Spirit give life to every dead area of my spiritual walk, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, make my life a living testimony of the transforming power of the New Covenant, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall walk in the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit.

2. Your heart shall become increasingly sensitive to the voice and leading of the Spirit.

3. The Word of God shall move from your mind into your heart and conduct.

4. Every form of dead religious performance shall lose its power over your life.

5. You shall receive grace to understand and obey God’s Word.

6. Your spiritual life shall not become dry, stagnant or lifeless.

7. The fruit of the Holy Spirit shall become increasingly visible in your character.

8. Your mind shall be renewed and your life transformed into the likeness of Christ.

9. You shall experience the liberty and life that come through the Spirit of the Lord.

10. Your life shall become a living demonstration that the Spirit gives life, in Jesus name.
