Description: God entrusts His resources to His people and expects them to manage them faithfully, honestly and responsibly for His glory.

INTRODUCTION

Everything we possess ultimately belongs to God. Our money, possessions, opportunities, abilities and influence are gifts entrusted to us for a purpose. Therefore, Christian stewardship is not primarily about ownership but about faithfulness. A trustworthy steward understands that one day he will give an account of what God placed in his hands.

In 2 Corinthians 8:20-24, Paul demonstrates this principle through the careful handling of the financial contribution being collected for needy believers. He was determined that no one should have legitimate reason to accuse him of mishandling the offering. He therefore ensured that the work was conducted with integrity, accountability and openness.

The passage challenges every believer to examine how faithfully we handle God's resources. Whether much or little has been entrusted to us, God is looking for faithfulness. He wants us to use His resources wisely, protect our testimony and ensure that everything entrusted to us contributes to His purposes.

1. GOD IS THE OWNER OF EVERYTHING WE HAVE

A trustworthy steward begins with the understanding that everything ultimately belongs to God. This truth changes our attitude towards possessions and prevents us from treating God's resources as though they were exclusively ours.

a. The Earth Belongs to God (Psalm 24:1) — Everything in the earth belongs to the Lord, including everything that comes into our possession.

b. God Gives Us the Power to Obtain Wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18) — Our ability to prosper ultimately comes from God.

c. We Are Stewards of God's Possessions (1 Chronicles 29:14) — Even what we give to God originally came from His hand.

d. Ownership Requires Accountability (Romans 14:12) — Every person will give an account of himself to God.

Biblical Example: David recognised that everything Israel brought for the temple had first come from God (1 Chronicles 29:11-16).

2. GOD EXPECTS FAITHFULNESS FROM HIS STEWARDS

God does not merely look at how much we have; He looks at how faithfully we manage what He has entrusted to us.

a. Stewards Must Be Faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2) — Faithfulness is the fundamental requirement of anyone entrusted with responsibility.

b. Faithfulness Applies to Little Things (Luke 16:10) — The way we handle small responsibilities reveals whether we can be trusted with greater ones.

c. Faithfulness Requires Consistency (Proverbs 28:20) — A trustworthy person remains dependable over time.

d. Faithfulness Brings God's Approval (Matthew 25:21) — God commends servants who faithfully manage what He entrusts to them.

Biblical Example: Joseph proved faithful in Potiphar's house, in prison and later in Egypt, demonstrating consistency in every season (Genesis 39:4-6, 21-23; 41:39-41).

3. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS HANDLE RESOURCES WITH INTEGRITY

Paul was concerned that the offering should be administered in a way that was honourable before both God and people. Integrity must govern every financial responsibility.

a. We Must Be Honest Before God (2 Corinthians 8:21) — God sees every financial transaction and knows the motives behind it.

b. We Must Be Honourable Before People (2 Corinthians 8:21) — Our financial conduct should be sufficiently transparent to protect our testimony.

c. We Must Avoid Legitimate Accusations (2 Corinthians 8:20) — Paul took deliberate precautions so that the administration of the offering would not become a source of blame.

d. Integrity Protects Our Testimony (Proverbs 10:9) — Whoever walks uprightly walks securely.

Biblical Example: Samuel could confidently ask Israel whether he had ever defrauded or oppressed anyone during his leadership (1 Samuel 12:3-5).

4. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS ACCEPT ACCOUNTABILITY

Paul did not treat financial responsibility as a private matter. The involvement of other trusted believers demonstrates that accountability is a protection rather than a burden.

a. Accountability Protects Ministry (2 Corinthians 8:20–21) — Proper oversight helps prevent suspicion and protects the reputation of God's work.

b. Trusted People Can Share Responsibility (2 Corinthians 8:23) — Paul describes his fellow workers as partners and representatives in the ministry.

c. Transparency Builds Confidence (2 Corinthians 8:24) — Open and honourable conduct strengthens trust among believers.

d. Wise Counsel Prevents Trouble (Proverbs 15:22) — Plans are strengthened when responsible people are willing to receive counsel.

Biblical Example: The early Church appointed trusted men to oversee the daily distribution to widows, ensuring that the responsibility was handled properly (Acts 6:1-6).

5. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS USE RESOURCES FOR GOD'S PURPOSES

God gives resources with purpose. A steward should therefore ask how what has been entrusted to him can advance God's kingdom and bless others.

a. Resources Should Honour God (Proverbs 3:9) — We honour the Lord with our possessions and the firstfruits of our increase.

b. Resources Should Serve Others (1 Peter 4:10) — Whatever gift we receive should be used to minister to others as faithful stewards.

c. Resources Can Advance the Gospel (Philippians 4:15-17) — Giving towards God's work participates in the advancement of the Gospel.

d. Resources Should Produce Eternal Fruit (Matthew 6:19-20) — Jesus teaches us to invest our treasures in things of eternal value.

Biblical Example: The Philippian church faithfully supported Paul's ministry and participated in the work of the Gospel (Philippians 4:14-18).

6. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS RESIST GREED AND SELFISHNESS

One of the greatest dangers in stewardship is forgetting that resources are entrusted to us for God's purposes. Greed can turn a steward into a servant of possessions.

a. Beware of Covetousness (Luke 12:15) — Life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.

b. Do Not Serve Money (Matthew 6:24) — Jesus warns that no one can serve both God and mammon.

c. Pursue Contentment (1 Timothy 6:6-8) — Godliness with contentment protects the heart from destructive materialism.

d. Use Wealth Without Worshipping It (1 Timothy 6:17-19) — Those who have resources are instructed to trust God rather than uncertain riches.

Biblical Example: Judas allowed his desire for money to corrupt his relationship with Christ and eventually betrayed Him for financial gain (Matthew 26:14-16).

7. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS REMAIN FAITHFUL IN EVERY SEASON

Faithfulness is not determined by whether we have abundance or scarcity. A trustworthy steward remains faithful regardless of changing circumstances.

a. Be Faithful in Abundance (Deuteronomy 8:10-14) — Prosperity must never cause us to forget the Lord.

b. Be Faithful in Need (Philippians 4:12) — Paul learned how to live faithfully in both abundance and lack.

c. Be Faithful Under Pressure (Luke 16:10) — Difficult circumstances do not excuse dishonesty.

d. Be Faithful Until the End (Revelation 2:10) — God calls His people to remain faithful even through severe trials.

Biblical Example: Job continued to honour God even after experiencing devastating losses (Job 1:20-22).

8. TRUSTWORTHY STEWARDS WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT TO GOD

Stewardship has an eternal dimension. Every resource, opportunity and responsibility entrusted to us will ultimately be evaluated by God.

a. We Shall Give an Account (Romans 14:12) — Every person will answer to God for his own stewardship.

b. God Knows How We Have Used His Resources (Luke 12:2-3) — Nothing is permanently hidden from Him.

c. Faithfulness Will Be Rewarded (Matthew 25:21) — God honours those who faithfully fulfil their responsibilities.

d. Our Goal Should Be God's Approval (2 Corinthians 5:9) — The ultimate ambition of the believer should be to please the Lord.

Biblical Example: The faithful servants in the parable of the talents were commended because they responsibly used what their master had entrusted to them (Matthew 25:20-23).

CONCLUSION

A trustworthy steward is not merely someone who possesses resources; he is someone who understands that those resources belong to God and must be handled according to God's purposes. Paul demonstrated that financial responsibility requires integrity, accountability, transparency and faithfulness. He wanted the work of God to be protected from legitimate accusation.

Today, let us examine everything God has placed in our hands—money, possessions, time, gifts, opportunities, influence and ministry responsibilities. Let us handle them faithfully, knowing that stewardship is a sacred trust. May we live in such a way that when the Master examines our stewardship, He will find us faithful.
