By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Description: The Christian life is a continual expression of Christ in us, where His character, power, love and purpose become visible through our lives.

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is not merely about professing faith in Jesus Christ; it is about allowing the life of Christ to become visible through us. Paul declares that he carried in his body the dying of the Lord Jesus so that the life of Jesus might also be manifested in his body. Christianity therefore involves both identification with Christ's death and the manifestation of His life.

The life of Christ is revealed when our old nature is brought under the rule of the cross and Christ is given room to live through us. Our words, conduct, attitudes, decisions, relationships and ministry should increasingly reflect the character of Jesus.

Paul understood that his suffering was not meaningless. Even while facing persecution and death, he knew that God was using his life to reveal Christ to others. When believers surrender themselves to God, their lives become vessels through which the world can see something of Jesus.

1. CHRIST MUST BE SEEN IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER

The purpose of salvation is not merely to change our destination but to transform our lives into the likeness of Christ. Those who belong to Christ should increasingly reflect Him.

a. We Are Called to Follow Christ (1 Peter 2:21) — Christ left us an example so that we should follow His steps.

b. We Must Walk as Christ Walked (1 John 2:6) — Anyone who claims to abide in Christ should live as He lived.

c. We Are Being Changed into His Image (2 Corinthians 3:18) — The Holy Spirit continually transforms believers into the likeness of Christ.

d. Christ Lives in Us (Galatians 2:20) — The believer's life is no longer centred on self but on Christ living through him.

Biblical Example: The disciples were recognised as people who had been with Jesus because His influence was evident in their lives (Acts 4:13).

2. THE CROSS MUST DEAL WITH THE OLD LIFE

Paul spoke about “the dying of the Lord Jesus” being carried in his body. This points to the believer's identification with Christ's death and the continual putting to death of the works of the flesh.

a. We Are Crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20) — The old self must surrender its control so that Christ may rule our lives.

b. We Must Die to Sin (Romans 6:6-7) — The power of sin is broken as we identify with Christ's death.

c. We Must Mortify the Flesh (Colossians 3:5) — Believers must put to death sinful desires and practices.

d. We Must Deny Ourselves (Luke 9:23) — Following Jesus requires daily self-denial and cross-bearing.

Biblical Example: Paul demonstrated this principle by counting his former achievements as loss for Christ and embracing a life centred on Him (Philippians 3:7-8).

3. CHRIST'S LIFE IS MANIFESTED THROUGH SURRENDER

The more completely we surrender ourselves to God, the more room Christ has to express His life through us. Divine life becomes visible when human self is submitted to God's will.

a. Present Yourself to God (Romans 12:1) — Our bodies must become living sacrifices surrendered to God's purposes.

b. Abide in Christ (John 15:4) — Fruitfulness comes from remaining continually connected to Jesus.

c. Let Christ Rule Your Heart (Colossians 3:15) — The peace and authority of Christ should govern our inner life.

d. Submit to God's Will (Luke 22:42) — Jesus Himself demonstrated complete surrender to the Father's will.

Biblical Example: Mary surrendered herself to God's purpose when she accepted the divine assignment concerning the birth of Jesus (Luke 1:38).

4. THE LIFE OF CHRIST IS SEEN THROUGH OUR CHARACTER

Christ is manifested not only through miracles but also through character. His love, humility, compassion, patience, forgiveness and holiness should become increasingly visible in us.

a. Walk in Love (Ephesians 5:2) — Christ's sacrificial love should shape our relationships.

b. Walk in Humility (Philippians 2:5-8) — The mind of Christ produces humility and selflessness.

c. Show Compassion (Colossians 3:12) — The character of Christ is expressed through kindness, mercy and compassion.

d. Forgive Others (Ephesians 4:32) — Christ's life is manifested when we forgive as God has forgiven us.

Biblical Example: Jesus demonstrated compassion when He wept with those mourning the death of Lazarus (John 11:33-36).

5. CHRIST'S LIFE IS MANIFESTED THROUGH OUR SUFFERING

Paul understood that suffering for Christ could become a platform for displaying Christ. Difficult circumstances do not necessarily hide Christ; sometimes they reveal Him more clearly.

a. Suffering Can Display Faith (2 Corinthians 4:11) — Being delivered to death for Christ's sake can cause His life to be manifested in us.

b. We Share in Christ's Sufferings (Philippians 3:10) — Knowing Christ includes fellowship with His sufferings.

c. Grace Sustains Us in Weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) — God's power becomes evident when human strength is inadequate.

d. Faithfulness Under Pressure Glorifies God (1 Peter 4:12-14) — Remaining faithful during trials can reveal the reality of Christ in us.

Biblical Example: Stephen manifested the character of Christ even while being persecuted, praying for those who were killing him (Acts 7:54-60).

6. CHRIST'S LIFE IS MANIFESTED THROUGH OUR SERVICE

The life of Christ becomes visible when believers serve others with humility, sacrifice and love. Jesus did not come to be served but to serve.

a. Serve Others Humbly (Mark 10:45) — Christ's example calls us to serve rather than seek personal recognition.

b. Use Your Gifts for Others (1 Peter 4:10) — Spiritual gifts are given so that believers can minister to one another.

c. Labour for the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:58) — Our service in the Lord should remain steadfast and faithful.

d. Let Your Works Point to God (Matthew 5:16) — Good works should cause people to glorify our Father in heaven.

Biblical Example: Dorcas demonstrated the life of Christ through practical service to widows and the needy in her community (Acts 9:36-39).

7. CHRIST'S LIFE MUST BECOME VISIBLE TO THE WORLD

God wants people to encounter Christ through the lives of His people. Our conduct should provide evidence that Jesus is alive and working within us.

a. We Are Christ's Ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20) — We represent Christ before the world.

b. We Are the Light of the World (Matthew 5:14) — Our lives should illuminate the darkness around us.

c. We Must Bear Fruit (John 15:8) — Fruitfulness demonstrates that we are genuine disciples of Christ.

d. Christ Must Increase in Us (John 3:30) — The goal is for Christ to become greater while self becomes less.

Biblical Example: The believers in Antioch lived in such a way that the world recognised their identity with Christ and called them Christians (Acts 11:26).

CONCLUSION

Manifesting the life of Christ means allowing Jesus to be seen through our lives. It means dying to the old nature, surrendering ourselves to God and allowing the Holy Spirit to reproduce the character of Christ within us. Our Christianity should not remain merely a confession from our lips; it should become a visible reality in our conduct.

Whether we are experiencing prosperity or adversity, strength or weakness, celebration or suffering, Christ should be seen in us. May our lives become living testimonies that Jesus is alive. May our words reveal Him, our character reflect Him, our service demonstrate Him and our endurance glorify Him.
