PULLING DOWN STRONGHOLDS

Description: Pulling down strongholds means confronting every spiritual, mental, and sinful structure that opposes God's purposes and overcoming it through the authority of Christ and the power of God's Word.

INTRODUCTION

A stronghold is a fortified structure that provides protection and resistance. Spiritually, strongholds can describe entrenched patterns of thinking, sinful influences, fear, deception, idolatry, or anything that establishes persistent resistance against the knowledge and purposes of God. Paul teaches that believers have weapons that are "mighty through God" for pulling down such strongholds.

The Bible gives us a powerful picture of Gideon in Judges 6. Before Gideon could confront the Midianites publicly, God instructed him to confront the altar of Baal within his own father's household. Gideon had to pull down a false altar before he could participate effectively in Israel's deliverance. This teaches us that some battles must first be addressed at their root.

Our victory does not come through human strength, anger, or physical force. Jesus has given His followers authority over the power of the enemy, while Paul reminds us that our weapons are spiritual. Through faith, prayer, God's Word, obedience, and the authority of Christ, we can resist what opposes God's will and establish His truth in our lives.

1. RECOGNISE THE STRONGHOLDS THAT MUST BE PULLED DOWN

Victory begins with discernment. We cannot effectively confront what we refuse to recognise.

a) Identify Wrong Thinking (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Some strongholds are established through thoughts and arguments that contradict God's truth. We must recognise these patterns and bring them under the authority of Christ.

b) Recognise Sinful Patterns (Hebrews 12:1)
Repeated sinful behaviours can become deeply established when they are tolerated. God calls us to lay aside every weight and sin that hinders our progress.

c) Identify False Worship (Judges 6:25)
Gideon was instructed to tear down his father's altar to Baal. Anything that competes with God for our ultimate allegiance must be confronted.

d) Expose Deception (John 8:32)
Truth brings freedom. God's Word exposes lies and enables us to distinguish between what is true and what merely appears convincing.

Biblical Example: Gideon was commanded to destroy the altar of Baal and cut down the associated Asherah pole before he could fulfil his larger assignment of delivering Israel (Judges 6:25-27).

2. USE SPIRITUAL WEAPONS

Paul clearly teaches that our warfare is not fought with merely human weapons. God has provided spiritual weapons that are powerful enough to overcome spiritual opposition.

a) Use God's Word (Ephesians 6:17)
The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit. Scripture gives us truth with which we can confront deception and strengthen our faith.

b) Pray With Faith (Ephesians 6:18)
Prayer connects us with God's power and keeps us spiritually alert. Persistent prayer enables us to stand firmly when opposition arises.

c) Exercise Faith (1 John 5:4)
Faith enables believers to overcome the pressures and influences that seek to draw them away from God.

d) Put On God's Armour (Ephesians 6:11)
The armour of God equips believers to stand against spiritual opposition rather than depending upon human strength.

Biblical Example: Jesus answered Satan's temptations by standing firmly upon the Word of God, demonstrating the power of Scripture in resisting deception (Matthew 4:1-11).

3. EXERCISE THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST

Believers do not confront spiritual opposition in their own strength. Christ has given His followers authority to stand against the enemy.

a) Walk In Christ's Authority (Luke 10:19)
Jesus assured His disciples that He had given them authority over the power of the enemy. This authority comes from Him and must be exercised in submission to Him.

b) Submit To God (James 4:7)
Spiritual authority does not operate independently of obedience. We must first submit ourselves to God and then resist the devil.

c) Resist The Enemy (1 Peter 5:8-9)
Believers are instructed to remain watchful and resist the devil firmly in faith.

d) Stand In Victory (1 John 4:4)
The believer does not stand alone. The One who lives within us is greater than the forces opposing God's purposes.

Biblical Example: The seventy disciples returned to Jesus rejoicing because even the demons were subject to them in His name. Jesus reminded them that their authority came from Him (Luke 10:17-20).

4. TEAR DOWN WHAT COMPETES WITH GOD

Some strongholds survive because people become comfortable with them. God instructed Gideon to deal directly with the altar of Baal because Israel could not fully walk in God's purposes while idolatry remained established.

a) Remove Idols From Your Life (Exodus 20:3-5)
Anything that receives the devotion, trust, or allegiance that belongs to God alone must be removed.

b) Destroy Compromising Influences (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Wrong influences can gradually weaken godly convictions. We must carefully evaluate what shapes our thinking and behaviour.

c) Separate From Sinful Practices (2 Corinthians 6:17)
God calls His people to live distinctly from practices that contradict His holiness.

d) Establish God's Altar Again (Judges 6:26)
After tearing down Baal's altar, Gideon was instructed to build an altar to the Lord. Spiritual victory involves not only removing what is wrong but establishing what is right.

Biblical Example: Hezekiah removed idolatrous objects and restored proper worship in Judah, leading the people back towards wholehearted devotion to God (2 Kings 18:3-6).

5. STAND UNTIL THE STRONGHOLD FALLS

Some battles require perseverance. A stronghold that has existed for a long time may not disappear simply because we have recognised it; we must remain committed to God's truth and continue standing in faith.

a) Stand Firm (Ephesians 6:13)
God calls believers to withstand opposition and remain standing after the battle.

b) Renew Your Mind Continually (Romans 12:2)
Transformation takes place as our minds are continually renewed by God's truth rather than shaped by worldly patterns.

c) Persevere In Prayer (Luke 18:1)
Jesus taught that believers should pray continually and not lose heart. Persistent prayer keeps our faith active.

d) Trust God's Power (Zechariah 4:6)
Lasting spiritual victory is accomplished by God's Spirit rather than human strength or ability.

Biblical Example: Joshua and Israel persisted in following God's instructions around Jericho until the walls fell according to God's appointed time (Joshua 6:1-20).

CONCLUSION

Strongholds may appear powerful because they have existed for a long time, but no stronghold is stronger than the power of God. Through Christ, believers have been equipped with spiritual weapons and authority to confront deception, resist the enemy, tear down what opposes God's will, and establish His truth.

Therefore, do not surrender to what God has called you to confront. Identify the strongholds, submit yourself to God, stand upon His Word, pray persistently, exercise the authority of Christ, and replace ungodly structures with wholehearted devotion to God. What has stood for years can come down when God's people stand in faith and obedience.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, open my spiritual understanding to recognise every stronghold that is contrary to Your will and purpose for my life, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, give me grace to pull down every wrong thought, false belief, and argument that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ, in Jesus name.

3. Father, destroy every sinful pattern and ungodly influence that has become established in my life, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me spiritual strength to use Your Word, prayer, faith, and every weapon You have provided to stand against spiritual opposition, in Jesus name.

5. Father, help me to walk in the authority of Jesus Christ while remaining completely submitted to Your will and Word, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, expose and remove every idol, compromise, and influence that competes with Your rightful place in my life, in Jesus name.

7. Father, give me grace to establish Your truth, righteousness, holiness, and presence in every area where ungodly influences have been removed, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, strengthen my faith to resist every attack of the enemy and remain standing firmly upon Your promises, in Jesus name.

9. Father, give me perseverance in prayer and obedience until every stronghold opposing Your purpose is completely broken, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, let every stronghold standing against Your purpose for my life fall by the power of Your Spirit, and establish Your kingdom, truth, and righteousness in me, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Every stronghold that has resisted God's purpose in your life shall be confronted by the power of God and shall not have the final word over your destiny.

2. You shall receive spiritual discernment to recognise every thought, influence, habit, and deception that attempts to establish itself against the knowledge of Christ.

3. The Word of God shall become powerful in your mouth and heart, giving you wisdom and strength to overcome deception and spiritual opposition.

4. You shall walk in the authority that Christ has given you, while remaining fully submitted to God and guided by His Word.

5. Every ungodly altar and influence competing with God's rightful place in your life shall be removed, and your devotion to God shall become stronger.

6. The Lord shall give you courage to confront entrenched patterns that have hindered your spiritual progress, and you shall not retreat from the obedience He requires.

7. Your mind shall be renewed by God's truth, and every pattern of thinking contrary to Christ shall lose its controlling influence over you.

8. You shall stand firm in faith during spiritual battles, and the power of the enemy shall not overcome the purposes of God concerning your life.

9. As you pray, obey, and trust God, every persistent obstacle standing against His will shall give way according to His perfect timing and power.

10. You shall walk in increasing spiritual freedom and victory, and your life shall become a testimony of God's power to pull down strongholds and establish His purposes.
