CHRIST, OUR EXAMPLE OF GENEROSITY

INTRODUCTION

Paul presented Jesus Christ as the supreme example of generosity to the Corinthians. After describing the remarkable generosity of the Macedonian believers, he directed their attention to Christ Himself: “though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor.” Christian generosity is therefore not founded merely on human examples but on the grace and sacrifice of Christ.

Jesus possessed heavenly glory and divine riches, yet He willingly humbled Himself and came into the world for our salvation. His generosity was not motivated by obligation or personal gain. He gave Himself because of love. The cross remains the greatest demonstration of what it means to give sacrificially for the good of others.

When we understand what Christ has done for us, generosity becomes more than an occasional act of giving. It becomes a lifestyle. Those who have received the grace of Christ are called to reflect that grace in the way they treat others, use their resources, serve the Church, and respond to human needs.

1. CHRIST GAVE HIMSELF WILLINGLY

Jesus was not forced to come to earth or lay down His life. He willingly chose the path of sacrifice for our salvation.

a. He Voluntarily Came Into the World (Philippians 2:6-7) — Christ willingly humbled Himself and took the form of a servant.

b. He Willingly Laid Down His Life (John 10:17-18) — Jesus declared that He had authority to lay down His life and to take it again.

c. He Accepted the Father's Will (Luke 22:42) — In Gethsemane, Christ submitted Himself completely to the Father's purpose.

d. He Gave Himself for Us (Galatians 2:20) — Paul understood Christ's sacrifice as a personal expression of divine love.

Biblical Example: Jesus willingly endured the cross rather than turning away from the suffering appointed for Him (Hebrews 12:2).

2. CHRIST GAVE SACRIFICIALLY

Christ's generosity involved an immeasurable sacrifice. He did not merely give something He possessed; He gave Himself.

a. He Left Heavenly Glory (John 17:5) — Christ laid aside the visible glory He had with the Father before the world existed.

b. He Became a Servant (Philippians 2:7) — The Lord of glory took the position of a servant for our sake.

c. He Bore Our Sins (1 Peter 2:24) — Jesus carried our sins in His own body on the cross.

d. He Gave His Life as a Ransom (Mark 10:45) — Christ came to serve and to give His life for many.

Biblical Example: The crucifixion of Christ demonstrates the ultimate sacrifice of love and obedience (John 19:16-30).

3. CHRIST GAVE BECAUSE OF LOVE

The foundation of Christ's generosity was divine love. His sacrifice reveals how deeply God values humanity.

a. God's Love Gave His Son (John 3:16) — God's love was demonstrated through the giving of His only begotten Son.

b. Christ Loved Us Completely (John 15:13) — Jesus described the greatest expression of love as laying down one's life for others.

c. Christ's Love Was Sacrificial (Ephesians 5:2) — Believers are called to walk in love after the pattern of Christ's self-giving.

d. Love Seeks the Good of Others (1 Corinthians 13:5) — Genuine love does not live entirely for itself.

Biblical Example: Christ demonstrated His love by dying for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:6-8).

4. CHRIST'S GENEROSITY WAS NOT DEPENDENT ON OUR WORTHINESS

Jesus did not wait for humanity to become deserving before He gave Himself. His grace reached us while we were sinners.

a. Christ Died for Sinners (Romans 5:8) — God's love was demonstrated while humanity was still separated from Him.

b. Grace Is Freely Given (Ephesians 2:8-9) — Salvation is God's gift and cannot be earned by human works.

c. Christ Came to Seek the Lost (Luke 19:10) — Jesus came to save those who were spiritually lost.

d. Mercy Reaches the Undeserving (Titus 3:5) — Salvation rests on God's mercy rather than human righteousness.

Biblical Example: Jesus welcomed and transformed Zacchaeus despite his reputation and past conduct (Luke 19:1-10).

5. CHRIST'S GENEROSITY PRODUCES RICHES FOR OTHERS

Paul said that Christ became poor so that believers might become rich. This primarily speaks of the spiritual riches and salvation believers receive through Christ.

a. We Receive Salvation (Ephesians 1:7) — Through Christ we have redemption and forgiveness of sins.

b. We Receive Spiritual Riches (Ephesians 1:3) — Believers are blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.

c. We Become Children of God (John 1:12) — Those who receive Christ are given the privilege of becoming God's children.

d. We Receive Eternal Life (John 10:28) — Christ gives His people eternal life and keeps them in His care.

Biblical Example: The thief on the cross received the promise of paradise through faith in Christ (Luke 23:39-43).

6. CHRIST TEACHES US TO LIVE FOR OTHERS

Jesus did not live a self-centred life. His ministry was characterised by service, compassion, sacrifice, and concern for others.

a. He Came to Serve (Mark 10:45) — Christ defined His mission in terms of service and self-giving.

b. He Put Others' Needs Before His Comfort (Matthew 14:14-16) — Jesus responded compassionately to the needs of the multitude.

c. He Taught His Disciples to Serve (John 13:12-15) — By washing their feet, Jesus gave them a practical example of humble service.

d. He Calls Us to Follow His Example (1 Peter 2:21) — Believers are called to follow Christ's pattern of conduct.

Biblical Example: Jesus washed His disciples' feet and instructed them to follow His example of humble service (John 13:1-17).

7. CHRIST'S GENEROSITY SHOULD SHAPE OUR GENEROSITY

The grace we have received from Christ should influence how we respond to others. We are called to become channels through which God's love and generosity reach people.

a. Give as Christ Gave (Ephesians 5:2) — We are commanded to walk in love according to Christ's sacrificial example.

b. Share With Those in Need (1 John 3:17-18) — Love must become practical when we encounter genuine need.

c. Use Your Resources for God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31) — Everything we possess should ultimately serve God's purposes.

d. Become a Blessing to Others (Proverbs 11:25) — Generosity refreshes others and can become a testimony of God's grace.

Biblical Example: Barnabas demonstrated Christlike generosity by selling a possession and giving the proceeds for the benefit of the church (Acts 4:36-37).

8. CHRIST'S EXAMPLE CALLS US TO A LIFESTYLE OF GENEROSITY

The generosity of Jesus is not merely a doctrine to believe; it is an example to follow. His grace should transform our attitude towards giving and service.

a. Give Willingly (2 Corinthians 9:7) — Christian giving should flow from a willing and cheerful heart.

b. Give Sacrificially (2 Samuel 24:24) — Genuine devotion may require meaningful personal sacrifice.

c. Give Generously (2 Corinthians 9:6) — Scripture encourages believers to sow generously.

d. Give With Love (1 Corinthians 13:3) — Generosity must be accompanied by genuine love if it is to reflect Christ.

Biblical Example: The Macedonian believers followed this principle by giving generously despite severe affliction and deep poverty (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).

CONCLUSION

Jesus Christ is our supreme example of generosity. Though He was rich, He became poor for our sake. He willingly humbled Himself, served humanity, bore our sins, and gave His life so that we might receive salvation and the riches of God's grace. His generosity was motivated by love and expressed through sacrifice.

As people who have received such great grace, we are called to reflect Christ in our own lives. Let us give ourselves first to the Lord, serve others with humility, respond to genuine needs, and use our resources faithfully for God's purposes. May the grace we have received from Christ become visible through a life of generosity, love, sacrifice, and service.

10. Lord, let the grace of Christ be clearly reflected in everything I do, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall grow continually in the grace and character of Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Your heart shall be free from selfishness and greed, in Jesus name.

3. You shall become a willing and joyful servant of others, in Jesus name.

4. The love of Christ shall flow through your life and touch many people, in Jesus name.

5. You shall receive grace to make sacrifices for God's kingdom, in Jesus name.

6. Your resources shall become instruments of blessing and Gospel advancement, in Jesus name.

7. You shall have wisdom to steward everything God places in your hands, in Jesus name.

8. Your life shall demonstrate the generosity, humility, and love of Christ, in Jesus name.

9. You shall be a blessing to people in genuine need, in Jesus name.

10. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ shall continually abound towards you, and your life shall bring glory to God, in Jesus name.
