LIVING WITH ETERNAL HOPE

Description: Eternal hope gives believers confidence that this present life is not the end, strengthens us through suffering, and motivates us to live faithfully in preparation for eternity.

INTRODUCTION

The Christian does not live without hope. Paul, writing to believers who experienced suffering and uncertainty, directs their attention beyond the temporary realities of this present life to the eternal realities God has prepared for them. He declares that even if our earthly house is dissolved, “we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” This is the confidence of eternal hope.

Eternal hope does not mean that Christians never experience pain, disappointment, persecution, weakness, or sorrow. Rather, it means that these things do not have the final word. The believer knows that this present body and earthly existence are temporary, while what God has prepared for His people is eternal. Therefore, our present struggles must be viewed in the light of God's eternal promises.

Paul's teaching also connects eternal hope with present responsibility. Because we have an eternal future, we must live in a way that pleases Christ today. We walk by faith, not by sight; we seek to be accepted by Him; and we remember that we will all appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ. Eternal hope therefore gives us both confidence for tomorrow and responsibility for today.

1. ETERNAL HOPE REMINDS US THAT THIS LIFE IS TEMPORARY

Paul compares our present earthly existence to a temporary dwelling. Whatever we experience in this life is not the final destination of the believer.

a. Our Earthly Dwelling Is Temporary (2 Corinthians 5:1) — Our present bodies and earthly existence are described as a tabernacle, reminding us that this life is temporary.

b. Our Present Troubles Are Temporary (2 Corinthians 4:17) — Affliction may be real and painful, but it is not eternal.

c. The World Is Passing Away (1 John 2:17) — The things of this present world are temporary, but those who do God's will have an eternal future.

d. Do Not Build Your Entire Hope on Earthly Things (Matthew 6:19-20) — Earthly treasures can perish, but heavenly treasures endure.

Biblical Example: Abraham lived as a stranger and pilgrim because he looked for a city whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:9-10).

2. GOD HAS PREPARED AN ETERNAL DWELLING FOR HIS PEOPLE

The believer's hope is not based on wishful thinking. God has prepared an eternal dwelling for His people.

a. Our Future Dwelling Is From God (2 Corinthians 5:1) — Our eternal home is not a product of human achievement but God's provision.

b. Heaven Is an Eternal Inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-4) — Believers have an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading.

c. Christ Has Prepared a Place for Us (John 14:2-3) — Jesus promised to prepare a place for His followers and to receive them to Himself.

d. Our Citizenship Is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20) — The believer's ultimate citizenship and hope are heavenly.

Biblical Example: Stephen faced death with confidence because he saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:54-60).

3. ETERNAL HOPE GIVES US CONFIDENCE IN THE FACE OF DEATH

The Christian does not approach death with the same hopelessness as someone without Christ. We have a living hope beyond the grave.

a. We Know We Have an Eternal Future (2 Corinthians 5:1) — Paul speaks with confidence: “we know.” Christian hope is rooted in God's promise.

b. Death Is Not the End (1 Corinthians 15:54-55) — The resurrection gives believers victory over death.

c. We Will Receive Glorified Bodies (Philippians 3:21) — Christ will transform our mortal bodies to be like His glorious body.

d. Christ Has Conquered the Grave (John 11:25-26) — Jesus is the resurrection and the life, giving eternal hope to those who believe in Him.

Biblical Example: Paul faced death with confidence because he knew that to depart and be with Christ was far better (Philippians 1:21-23).

4. ETERNAL HOPE GIVES US STRENGTH IN PRESENT SUFFERING

Hope changes the way we respond to suffering. We may weep in the present, but we know that suffering is not the final chapter.

a. Present Suffering Cannot Compare With Future Glory (Romans 8:18) — The glory to be revealed will far outweigh present suffering.

b. God Is Working Through Our Trials (2 Corinthians 4:17) — Temporary affliction can produce an eternal weight of glory.

c. Hope Helps Us Wait Patiently (Romans 8:24-25) — When what we hope for is not yet visible, faith teaches us to wait.

d. God Will Ultimately Comfort His People (Revelation 21:4) — A day is coming when death, sorrow, crying, and pain will be no more.

Biblical Example: Paul and Silas sang praises to God in prison because their circumstances could not destroy their hope in God (Acts 16:22-25).

5. ETERNAL HOPE TEACHES US TO WALK BY FAITH

Because our ultimate realities are not all visible now, we must learn to live by faith.

a. Walk by Faith (2 Corinthians 5:7) — Faith trusts God even when the outcome is not visible.

b. Believe God's Promises (Hebrews 11:1) — Faith gives confidence concerning things that are hoped for but not yet seen.

c. Look Beyond What Is Visible (2 Corinthians 4:18) — Temporary circumstances must not become greater than eternal realities.

d. Trust God With the Future (Proverbs 3:5-6) — We can trust God's direction even when we do not understand the entire journey.

Biblical Example: Moses endured because he saw Him who is invisible and valued God's eternal reward above Egypt's temporary treasures (Hebrews 11:24-27).

6. ETERNAL HOPE SHOULD MAKE US EAGER TO PLEASE CHRIST

Hope for eternity should never produce spiritual laziness. Instead, it should motivate us to live lives that honour the Lord.

a. Make Pleasing Christ Your Ambition (2 Corinthians 5:9) — The knowledge of eternity should make pleasing the Lord our highest goal.

b. Live Worthy of Your Calling (Ephesians 4:1) — Our heavenly hope should influence our earthly conduct.

c. Pursue Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16) — Those who have an eternal hope must live as people set apart for God.

d. Abound in the Work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58) — Since our labour has eternal significance, we should remain steadfast in God's work.

Biblical Example: Enoch walked with God and pleased Him, demonstrating a life directed towards fellowship with God and eternal realities (Genesis 5:22-24; Hebrews 11:5).

7. ETERNAL HOPE REMINDS US THAT WE WILL GIVE ACCOUNT

The Christian has an eternal hope, but also an eternal responsibility. Paul connects his confidence about eternity with the certainty of appearing before Christ.

a. We Will Appear Before Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10) — Every believer will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ.

b. Our Works Will Be Examined (1 Corinthians 3:13-15) — The quality of our work will be tested.

c. Our Motives Matter (1 Corinthians 4:5) — Christ will reveal hidden things and the counsels of the heart.

d. Faithfulness Will Be Rewarded (Revelation 22:12) — Christ will reward His people according to their works.

Biblical Example: Paul lived with the consciousness that he would one day stand before Christ, which strengthened his determination to fulfil his ministry faithfully (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

8. ETERNAL HOPE ENABLES US TO FINISH WELL

The hope of eternity gives us strength to continue the journey. We are not merely trying to survive today; we are pressing towards an eternal destination.

a. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2) — Christ is the ultimate focus of our faith and the One who enables us to endure.

b. Forget What Is Behind (Philippians 3:13-14) — We must keep pressing towards the prize of God's high calling.

c. Remain Steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58) — Our eternal hope gives us reason to remain unmovable in the work of the Lord.

d. Finish the Race Faithfully (2 Timothy 4:7-8) — The goal is not merely to begin the Christian journey but to finish it well.

Biblical Example: Paul completed his earthly race with confidence, declaring, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

CONCLUSION

Eternal hope gives the believer a perspective that circumstances cannot destroy. This earthly dwelling is temporary, our present troubles are temporary, and the things we can see are temporary. But God has prepared an eternal dwelling for His people. There is a resurrection beyond death, glory beyond suffering, and an eternal future beyond this present life.

Therefore, do not allow temporary problems to destroy your eternal hope. Walk by faith, please the Lord, remain faithful in service, live in holiness, and keep your eyes on Christ. One day, this earthly journey will end, but your hope in Christ will become sight. Live today with eternity in your heart, confidence in God's promises, and your eyes fixed on the glory that is to come.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, strengthen my heart to live with a firm hope of eternity, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me not to allow temporary circumstances to destroy my confidence in You, in Jesus name.

3. Father, let the hope of heaven give me strength in every season of suffering, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, help me to walk by faith and not by sight every day, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give me grace to live a holy and acceptable life before You, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me to remain faithful in every assignment You have entrusted to me, in Jesus name.

7. Father, keep my heart focused on eternal things rather than temporary possessions, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, give me grace to endure every trial and finish my Christian journey faithfully, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let my life and service receive Your approval at the Judgment Seat of Christ, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, keep me faithful until the end and bring me safely into Your eternal kingdom, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall not lose your eternal hope because of temporary troubles.

2. You shall receive strength to endure every season of difficulty.

3. Your faith shall remain strong when circumstances are contrary.

4. You shall walk by faith and not by sight.

5. You shall live a life that pleases the Lord.

6. You shall overcome every distraction that seeks to take your eyes away from eternal things.

7. Your labour in the Lord shall not be in vain.

8. You shall remain faithful until the end of your earthly journey.

9. You shall stand before Christ with joy and receive His commendation.

10. You shall inherit the eternal dwelling God has prepared for those who love Him.
