MINISTRY THAT EDIFIES

INTRODUCTION
God has called every believer to participate in the work of His Kingdom. The Church is not made up of spectators and performers; it is a living body in which every member has a function. Spiritual gifts, talents, resources, and opportunities for service are given so that believers can contribute to the growth and effectiveness of the Body of Christ.
The Corinthian church provides an important lesson about ministry. The believers were gifted and enthusiastic, but their gatherings were becoming disorderly because individuals were more concerned about exercising their gifts than about benefiting others. Paul corrected this attitude by establishing a simple but powerful principle: “Let all things be done unto edifying.”
This principle remains relevant today. Whether we preach, teach, sing, pray, give, lead, counsel, evangelise, organise, or serve behind the scenes, our ministry should strengthen people and glorify God. The question is not merely, “What can I do?” but, “How can what I do build the Church?”
1. MINISTRY IS GOD'S ASSIGNMENT
Christian ministry begins with God's calling and grace.
a) God Gives The Ministry (Ephesians 4:11)
Christ gives different ministry gifts to His Church.
b) God Gives The Grace (Romans 12:6)
The ability to minister effectively comes from God's grace.
c) God Gives The Opportunity (1 Corinthians 3:6)
Ministers work, but God ultimately gives the increase.
d) God Deserves The Glory (1 Peter 4:11)
Ministry must ultimately point people towards God.
2. EVERY BELIEVER CAN CONTRIBUTE
The work of building the Church is not reserved for a few people.
a) There Are Many Members (1 Corinthians 12:12)
The Church consists of many believers with different functions.
b) Every Member Has A Role (1 Corinthians 12:18)
God deliberately places members in the Body according to His purpose.
c) Every Gift Is Valuable (1 Corinthians 12:21-24)
No legitimate ministry gift should be considered insignificant.
d) Every Member Should Serve (1 Peter 4:10)
Believers are stewards of God's grace and should use what they have received.
3. THE PURPOSE OF MINISTRY IS EDIFICATION
Paul gives the governing principle in First Corinthians 14:26.
a) Ministry Should Build Up (1 Corinthians 14:26)
Everything done in the church gathering should contribute to spiritual strengthening.
b) Ministry Should Encourage (1 Corinthians 14:3)
God uses ministry to strengthen discouraged believers.
c) Ministry Should Comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3)
God's people should experience hope and encouragement through ministry.
d) Ministry Should Mature Believers (Ephesians 4:12-13)
The ultimate goal is spiritual growth and maturity.
4. LOVE MUST MOTIVATE MINISTRY
Ministry without love can become empty performance.
a) Love Is The Foundation (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
Even remarkable spiritual gifts accomplish little when love is absent.
b) Love Seeks Others' Good (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Ministry should be focused on the welfare of others.
c) Love Builds Up (1 Corinthians 8:1)
True ministry produces spiritual strength rather than personal admiration.
d) Love Serves Humbly (Philippians 2:3-4)
Ministers should value others above selfish ambition.
5. MINISTRY SHOULD EQUIP PEOPLE
Effective ministry does more than meet immediate needs; it prepares believers for service.
a) Equip The Saints (Ephesians 4:12)
Ministry leaders are called to prepare believers for the work of ministry.
b) Develop Spiritual Capacity (2 Timothy 2:2)
Mature believers should help others become capable servants.
c) Encourage Participation (1 Corinthians 12:27)
Every member should be encouraged to contribute to the Body.
d) Multiply Ministry (Exodus 18:17-23)
Wise leadership develops others rather than doing everything alone.
6. MINISTRY SHOULD STRENGTHEN THE WEAK
Christlike ministry pays attention to those who need help.
a) Support The Weak (1 Thessalonians 5:14)
Believers should strengthen those who are struggling.
b) Bear One Another's Burdens (Galatians 6:2)
Christian service includes helping people through difficult seasons.
c) Restore The Fallen (Galatians 6:1)
Correction should aim at restoration.
d) Encourage The Discouraged (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Words of encouragement can strengthen weary believers.
7. MINISTRY SHOULD NOT BE SELF-CENTRED
The platform is not the purpose.
a) Reject Self-Glory (Galatians 6:14)
The minister's greatest boast should be in Christ.
b) Avoid Pride (Philippians 2:3)
Ministry must not become a vehicle for personal superiority.
c) Honour Others (Romans 12:10)
Healthy ministry celebrates the contributions of others.
d) Remember The Master (Colossians 3:23-24)
We serve Christ even when people do not recognise our work.
8. MINISTRY SHOULD BE ORDERLY
Spiritual ministry must be accompanied by wisdom and discipline.
a) Let All Things Be Done Properly (1 Corinthians 14:40)
God values order in the gathered church.
b) Consider The Congregation (1 Corinthians 14:12)
Ministry should be beneficial to those receiving it.
c) Avoid Confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33)
God's work should not create unnecessary disorder.
d) Exercise Discernment (1 Corinthians 14:29)
Spiritual expressions should be evaluated responsibly.
9. MINISTRY SHOULD PRODUCE FRUIT
The effectiveness of ministry is demonstrated by its results.
a) Fruit Of Character (Galatians 5:22-23)
Genuine ministry should contribute to Christlike character.
b) Fruit Of Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 4:13-15)
Believers should become increasingly mature in Christ.
c) Fruit Of Service (Ephesians 2:10)
Saved people are called to good works.
d) Fruit That Remains (John 15:16)
Christ desires fruit that has lasting kingdom value.
10. MINISTRY SHOULD GLORIFY CHRIST
The highest purpose of ministry is to honour Jesus.
a) Christ Is The Head Of The Church (Ephesians 5:23)
All ministry operates under His authority.
b) Christ Must Increase (John 3:30)
The minister should decrease while Christ receives greater prominence.
c) Serve In Christ's Name (Colossians 3:17)
Everything should be done under the authority and honour of Jesus.
d) Give God The Glory (Matthew 5:16)
Our ministry should lead people to glorify our Father in heaven.
CONCLUSION
Ministry that edifies is ministry that builds people. First Corinthians 14:26 establishes a principle that should govern every Christian gathering and every ministry expression: “Let all things be done unto edifying.” Whether our contribution is public or private, visible or unnoticed, large or small, its purpose should be to strengthen the Body of Christ.
Therefore, let us examine our motives and methods. Do our words encourage? Does our service strengthen? Does our leadership equip? Does our ministry help people grow closer to Christ? When ministry is motivated by love, empowered by the Spirit, guided by God's Word, and directed towards edification, the Church becomes stronger and Christ is glorified.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, help me to understand and fulfil the ministry assignment You have given me, in Jesus name.
2. Lord, teach me to use every gift and ability You have given me for the edification of Your Church, in Jesus name.
3. Father, remove every selfish motive, pride, competition, and desire for recognition from my ministry, in Jesus name.
4. Lord, fill me with divine love so that my ministry will genuinely bless and strengthen others, in Jesus name.
5. Father, make me an instrument of encouragement, comfort, restoration, and spiritual growth, in Jesus name.
6. Lord, help me to recognise and develop the gifts of other believers and equip them for effective service, in Jesus name.
7. Father, give our church wisdom to operate every ministry with biblical order, unity, excellence, and spiritual discernment, in Jesus name.
8. Lord, strengthen every weak, discouraged, hurting, and struggling believer through the ministry of Your people, in Jesus name.
9. Father, let every ministry in our church produce lasting spiritual fruit and genuine Christian maturity, in Jesus name.
10. Lord, let everything we do in ministry exalt Jesus Christ, strengthen His Church, and bring glory to Your name, in Jesus name.
PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS
1. You shall fulfil your God-given ministry assignment with grace, wisdom, and faithfulness.
2. Every gift and ability God has placed in you shall become a blessing to others.
3. Your ministry shall build people rather than merely attract attention.
4. You shall minister with genuine love, humility, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.
5. Through your words and service, discouraged people shall receive strength and hope.
6. God shall use you to equip, develop, and raise other effective servants for His Kingdom.
7. Every spirit of pride, competition, jealousy, and selfish ambition shall be removed from your ministry.
8. Your ministry shall operate with divine order, excellence, discernment, and spiritual power.
9. Your labour in the Lord shall produce lasting spiritual fruit and contribute to the growth of His Church.
10. Through your ministry, lives shall be transformed, the Church shall be strengthened, Christ shall be exalted, and God shall receive all the glory, in Jesus name.
