INTRODUCTION
Honour is a powerful spiritual principle that attracts blessings, favour, and divine manifestation, while familiarity often breeds dishonour and limits the flow of God’s power. In Mark 6:1-6, Jesus returned to His hometown, but instead of receiving Him with honour, the people became too familiar with Him. As a result, they dishonoured Him and missed their moment of divine visitation.
Familiarity causes people to trivialise what should be valued. When honour is lost, access is reduced, and miracles are limited. Many people miss breakthroughs not because God is unwilling, but because they fail to recognise and honour what He has placed around them.
This message highlights the danger of dishonour and teaches how to cultivate honour in order to experience God’s power and blessings.
1. FAMILIARITY BREEDS DISHONOUR
Overexposure without reverence leads to loss of value and respect.
a) Seeing the Ordinary Instead of the Divine (Mark 6:2-3)
The people saw Jesus as just a carpenter, ignoring His divine nature.
b) Taking Grace for Granted (John 4:44)
A prophet is often without honour in his own country due to familiarity.
c) Loss of Reverence (Ecclesiastes 5:1)
Lack of reverence for God and His vessels leads to dishonour.
d) Familiarity Limits Perception (2 Kings 5:11)
Naaman almost missed his miracle because he expected something different.
Biblical Example: The people of Nazareth dishonoured Jesus because they were familiar with Him, and they could not receive His power (Mark 6:4-5).
2. DISHONOUR BLOCKS DIVINE MANIFESTATION
Where there is dishonour, the flow of God’s power is hindered.
a) Limited Miracles (Mark 6:5)
Jesus could do only a few miracles because of their unbelief and dishonour.
b) Loss of Blessings (1 Samuel 2:30)
God honours those who honour Him, but dishonour leads to rejection.
c) Closed Doors (Matthew 13:58)
Unbelief and dishonour prevent mighty works from taking place.
d) Resistance to Authority (Hebrews 13:17)
Dishonouring spiritual authority hinders spiritual growth and blessing.
Biblical Example: Eli’s sons dishonoured God and lost their priestly position, bringing judgment upon their household (1 Samuel 2:12-17, 34).
3. HONOUR ATTRACTS BLESSINGS AND ACCESS
Honour creates an atmosphere for favour, increase, and divine encounters.
a) Honour Unlocks Reward (Matthew 10:41)
Receiving a prophet brings a prophet’s reward.
b) Honouring God First (Proverbs 3:9-10)
Honour through giving and reverence brings abundance.
c) Access to Grace (Hebrews 4:16)
Honour positions believers to receive mercy and grace.
d) Elevation Through Honour (1 Peter 5:6)
Humility and honour lead to divine lifting.
Biblical Example: The Shunammite woman honoured Elisha and received a miracle of a child and restoration of her son’s life (2 Kings 4:8-17, 32-37).
4. CULTIVATING A HEART OF HONOUR
Honour must be intentional and consistent in a believer’s life.
a) Recognising God’s Grace (1 Corinthians 15:10)
Value the grace of God upon people and situations.
b) Maintaining Humility (Philippians 2:3)
Esteem others better than yourself to walk in honour.
c) Speaking with Respect (Ephesians 4:29)
Words should reflect honour and build others up.
d) Valuing Divine Connections (Ruth 1:16-17)
Honour relationships that God has placed in your life.
Biblical Example: David honoured Saul despite his flaws, and God rewarded him with the throne (1 Samuel 24:6).
CONCLUSION
Honour is a key that unlocks divine blessings, while familiarity and dishonour can block opportunities and hinder miracles. The story of Jesus in Nazareth shows that even the presence of God can be limited by a lack of honour.
Choose to cultivate a heart of honour, towards God, His Word, and the people He has placed in your life. As you do, you will experience open doors, divine favour, and supernatural manifestations.
