Description: Living in harmony means walking in love, humility, understanding, forgiveness, and unity so that God's people can live and serve together in peace.
INTRODUCTION
The church in Corinth had experienced disagreements, divisions, misunderstandings, and conflicts. As Paul concluded his second letter, he called the believers to spiritual maturity, encouragement, unity, and peace. His instruction to “live in peace” reveals God's desire for His people to relate to one another in harmony.
Harmony does not mean that everyone will have the same personality, opinion, background, or assignment. The body of Christ contains different people with different gifts and responsibilities, but they are united by one Lord, one faith, and one Spirit. Biblical harmony is the ability to maintain love and unity despite legitimate differences.
When believers live in harmony, the church becomes stronger, families become healthier, relationships become more fruitful, and the testimony of Christ becomes clearer. But when selfishness, pride, resentment, competition, and unforgiveness dominate, division follows. God therefore calls us to become peacemakers and to protect the unity He has given us.
1. UNDERSTAND THAT GOD DESIRES UNITY
Harmony begins with understanding God's purpose for His people.
a. Unity Is Good And Pleasant (Psalm 133:1) — God declares it a beautiful and desirable thing when His people dwell together in unity.
b. We Are One Body In Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13) — Though believers have different functions, they belong to one spiritual body through Christ.
c. Christ Prayed For Unity (John 17:20-23) — Jesus prayed that His followers would be one so that the world would recognise God's work among them.
d. Unity Strengthens The Church (Ephesians 4:3) — Believers are commanded to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Biblical Example: The early church remained devoted to fellowship, prayer, teaching, and sharing with one another, demonstrating the strength that comes from spiritual unity (Acts 2:42-47).
2. WALK IN HUMILITY
Pride is one of the greatest enemies of harmony, while humility creates room for understanding and cooperation.
a. Esteem Others (Philippians 2:3) — Believers should not act from selfish ambition but should value others with humility.
b. Consider The Interests Of Others (Philippians 2:4) — Harmony grows when we care about the needs and wellbeing of others rather than focusing only on ourselves.
c. Submit To One Another (Ephesians 5:21) — Mutual submission demonstrates humility and helps prevent unnecessary conflict.
d. God Resists The Proud (James 4:6) — Pride creates resistance to God's grace, while humility positions us to receive His help.
Biblical Example: Moses demonstrated remarkable humility in leadership and was willing to work with others for the fulfilment of God's purpose (Numbers 12:3).
3. LET LOVE GOVERN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
Love is the foundation upon which lasting harmony is built.
a. Love Covers Offences (1 Peter 4:8) — Genuine love refuses to magnify every offence and seeks to preserve relationships.
b. Love Is Patient And Kind (1 Corinthians 13:4) — Patience and kindness prevent minor disagreements from becoming destructive conflicts.
c. Love Forgives (Colossians 3:13) — Believers must forgive one another as the Lord has forgiven them.
d. Love Seeks The Good Of Others (1 Corinthians 10:24) — Christian love looks beyond personal interests and seeks the wellbeing of others.
Biblical Example: Joseph demonstrated extraordinary love and forgiveness toward his brothers instead of retaliating against them for their past actions (Genesis 50:15-21).
4. CONTROL YOUR WORDS
Many conflicts begin or become worse because of careless and destructive speech.
a. Speak Words That Build (Ephesians 4:29) — Our speech should minister grace and strengthen those who hear us.
b. Avoid Slander And Evil Speaking (Titus 3:2) — Believers should not become people who speak evil about others or create unnecessary disputes.
c. A Soft Answer Turns Away Wrath (Proverbs 15:1) — Gentle responses can calm situations that might otherwise escalate.
d. Be Slow To Speak (James 1:19) — Listening carefully and controlling our speech can prevent many unnecessary conflicts.
Biblical Example: Abigail used wise and peaceful words to prevent David from taking revenge against Nabal's household (1 Samuel 25:23-35).
5. LEARN TO HANDLE DISAGREEMENTS WISELY
Harmony does not mean avoiding every disagreement; it means handling disagreements in a godly manner.
a. Address Offences Directly (Matthew 18:15) — Jesus taught believers to address personal offences privately rather than spreading them unnecessarily.
b. Listen Before Judging (Proverbs 18:13) — Answering before hearing the matter can produce misunderstanding and injustice.
c. Seek Reconciliation (Matthew 5:23-24) — God desires believers to take deliberate steps toward restoring broken relationships.
d. Do Not Repay Evil For Evil (Romans 12:17) — Retaliation deepens conflict, while godly responses create opportunities for peace.
Biblical Example: Paul and Barnabas experienced a sharp disagreement concerning John Mark, yet the work of God continued, and later Paul acknowledged Mark's usefulness in ministry (Acts 15:36-40; 2 Timothy 4:11).
6. PUT AWAY BITTERNESS AND FORGIVE
Harmony cannot survive where resentment and unforgiveness are continually nurtured.
a. Remove Bitterness (Ephesians 4:31) — Bitterness, wrath, anger, and malice must be removed from the believer's life.
b. Forgive As Christ Forgave You (Ephesians 4:32) — The forgiveness we have received from Christ becomes the pattern for forgiving others.
c. Refuse To Keep Record Of Offences (1 Corinthians 13:5) — Love does not continually calculate wrongs or use past offences as weapons.
d. Pursue Peace With Everyone (Hebrews 12:14) — Believers should actively pursue peace and holiness rather than waiting passively for relationships to improve.
Biblical Example: Stephen prayed for those who were persecuting him, demonstrating Christlike forgiveness even under extreme pressure (Acts 7:54-60).
7. CELEBRATE DIFFERENCES AND WORK TOGETHER
Harmony does not require uniformity. God's people can have different gifts and assignments while working toward the same purpose.
a. Different Gifts, One Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-6) — God gives different gifts and ministries, but the same Spirit works through them.
b. Every Member Has Value (1 Corinthians 12:14-21) — No member of the body should consider another unnecessary or inferior.
c. Work Together In Love (Ephesians 4:15-16) — The body grows when every part functions properly and works together in love.
d. Avoid Competition (Galatians 5:26) — Believers should not become boastful, provoke one another, or compete destructively.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah and the people worked together, with different families and groups taking responsibility for different sections of Jerusalem's wall (Nehemiah 3:1-32).
8. BECOME A PEACEMAKER
God calls believers not merely to enjoy peace but to actively promote peace wherever they go.
a. Blessed Are The Peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) — Jesus identifies peacemakers as people who reflect the character and purposes of God.
b. Pursue Peace As Far As It Depends On You (Romans 12:18) — Believers should make every reasonable effort to live peacefully with others.
c. Reconcile People When Possible (Philemon 1:15-16) — The gospel creates opportunities for relationships damaged by conflict to be restored.
d. Let God's Peace Rule Your Heart (Colossians 3:15) — When God's peace governs our hearts, it becomes easier to respond wisely rather than react emotionally.
Biblical Example: Abraham chose peace with Lot when their herdsmen began to quarrel. He willingly gave Lot the opportunity to choose first in order to prevent continued strife (Genesis 13:5-11).
CONCLUSION
Living in harmony is not weakness; it is evidence of spiritual maturity. God calls His people to walk in humility, love one another, control their words, forgive offences, handle disagreements wisely, appreciate different gifts, and actively pursue peace. Harmony does not eliminate differences, but it prevents differences from destroying fellowship.
Determine to become a carrier of peace wherever you go. Refuse to feed division, gossip, resentment, pride, and unnecessary conflict. Let the love of Christ govern your relationships, and let the peace of God rule your heart. When God's people live in harmony, the church becomes stronger, relationships become healthier, and the name of Christ is glorified.
