Description: This message teaches the importance of spiritual understanding and how the Holy Spirit enlightens the believer to know God's calling, inheritance, power, and purpose.
INTRODUCTION
There is a difference between having physical eyes and being able to see spiritually. A person may have excellent physical sight and yet remain spiritually blind to God's purpose, promises, opportunities, and power. Paul therefore prayed for the Ephesian believers that “the eyes of your understanding” would be enlightened. He knew that spiritual knowledge requires more than intellectual ability; it requires divine illumination.
The Ephesian believers had already heard the Gospel, believed in Christ, and received the Holy Spirit, yet Paul still prayed that their understanding would be enlightened. This teaches us that salvation is the beginning of spiritual discovery. There are dimensions of God's purpose that believers must continue to understand as they grow in Christ.
When God opens the eyes of our understanding, we begin to see ourselves, God, His Word, our inheritance, our calling, and our spiritual authority differently. We stop living merely by what circumstances say and begin living by what God has revealed. Spiritual understanding produces faith, wisdom, courage, stability, and purposeful Christian living.
1. SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING REQUIRES DIVINE ENLIGHTENMENT
Paul did not simply pray that the Ephesians would acquire more information. He prayed that their understanding would be enlightened. This means that spiritual truth must move from mere knowledge in the mind to revelation in the heart.
A person can hear the same Scripture repeatedly without understanding its depth. But when the Holy Spirit illuminates the Word, what was previously unclear becomes spiritually meaningful and applicable.
a) God Opens Spiritual Eyes (Psalm 119:18) – The psalmist prayed, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” We need God's help to see the treasures contained in His Word.
b) The Holy Spirit Reveals Truth (John 16:13) – The Spirit of truth guides believers into all truth. He makes divine realities clearer to the spiritual heart.
c) Christ Opens Understanding (Luke 24:45) – Jesus opened the understanding of His disciples so they could understand the Scriptures. Spiritual understanding ultimately comes from Christ.
d) Light Comes from God's Word (Psalm 119:130) – The entrance of God's Word gives light and understanding to the simple. Regular exposure to Scripture allows divine light to enter our hearts.
Biblical Example: The disciples on the road to Emmaus heard Jesus explain the Scriptures, but their understanding was fully opened when He revealed Himself to them (Luke 24:27, 31-32).
2. ENLIGHTENED EYES HELP US KNOW THE HOPE OF GOD'S CALLING
Paul prayed that believers would know “what is the hope of his calling.” Every Christian has been called by God for a purpose. We are not saved merely to occupy space on earth; we are called to know Christ, serve Him, represent Him, and fulfil His purpose.
When spiritual eyes are opened, we stop seeing our lives as ordinary and begin to understand that God has a purpose for our existence. Even difficulties can take on a different meaning when viewed through God's calling.
a) You Are Called by God (2 Timothy 1:9) – God has saved us and called us with a holy calling. Your salvation is connected to divine purpose.
b) You Are Called to Bear Fruit (John 15:16) – Jesus chose and ordained His disciples to go and bring forth fruit that would remain.
c) You Are Called to Be a Light (Matthew 5:14-16) – Believers are the light of the world. Your life should reveal Christ to people around you.
d) You Are Called to Eternal Glory (1 Peter 5:10) – God has called His people unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus. Your present journey is connected to an eternal destiny.
Biblical Example: Jeremiah initially saw himself as too young and inadequate, but God revealed that He had known, sanctified, and ordained him before birth (Jeremiah 1:5-7). Enlightened understanding changed Jeremiah's view of himself and his assignment.
3. ENLIGHTENED EYES REVEAL THE RICHES OF OUR INHERITANCE
Paul also prayed that believers would know “the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” Many Christians live below their spiritual privileges because they do not understand what they have received in Christ.
When your spiritual eyes are opened, you discover that your inheritance is greater than material possessions. You have access to God's presence, grace, wisdom, spiritual authority, eternal life, divine promises, and the riches of God's kingdom.
a) You Are an Heir of God (Romans 8:16-17) – As a child of God, you are an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ.
b) You Have Spiritual Blessings (Ephesians 1:3) – God has blessed believers with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.
c) You Have an Eternal Inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-4) – Your inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven.
d) You Have Access to God's Grace (Ephesians 2:7) – God intends to demonstrate the exceeding riches of His grace and kindness towards us through Christ Jesus.
Biblical Example: The elder brother of the prodigal son lived in his father's house but apparently failed to appreciate the privileges available to him. His father had to remind him, “Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine” (Luke 15:31).
4. ENLIGHTENED EYES HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD'S POWER IN US
Paul continued his prayer by speaking about “the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe.” Spiritual understanding enables believers to recognise that they are not helpless before the challenges of life.
The same power that raised Christ from the dead is presented as working towards believers. This does not mean that Christians will never face battles; it means that our battles do not have the final authority over us.
a) Resurrection Power Is Available (Ephesians 1:19-20) – The power that raised Christ from the dead demonstrates the immeasurable greatness of God's power.
b) The Spirit Gives Power (Acts 1:8) – The Holy Spirit empowers believers to become effective witnesses for Christ.
c) God Gives Power in Weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) – Divine strength is made perfect in human weakness. Our limitations do not limit God's power.
d) God Can Do Beyond Our Expectations (Ephesians 3:20) – God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to His power working in us.
Biblical Example: David faced Goliath with spiritual understanding. While others saw an enormous warrior, David saw a man defying the living God and trusted God's power for victory (1 Samuel 17:45-47).
5. SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING CHANGES HOW WE SEE OUR CIRCUMSTANCES
One of the greatest benefits of spiritual sight is the ability to see circumstances from God's perspective. Two people can face the same situation and respond differently because they do not see it in the same way.
Fear often grows when circumstances are viewed without God. Faith rises when the same circumstances are viewed through God's promises. Spiritual understanding does not deny reality; it recognises that God is greater than the reality confronting us.
a) See God's Presence in the Battle (2 Kings 6:16-17) – Elisha prayed for his servant's eyes to be opened, and he saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire.
b) See Beyond Temporary Affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17-18) – Paul taught believers to look beyond temporary visible things to eternal realities.
c) See Possibilities Through Faith (Mark 9:23) – Jesus declared that all things are possible to him that believes. Faith changes the way we approach impossible situations.
d) See God's Faithfulness in Difficult Times (Romans 8:28) – Spiritual understanding helps us trust that God is working all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
Biblical Example: The ten spies saw giants and concluded that Israel could not possess the land, while Joshua and Caleb saw the same giants but believed God's promise (Numbers 13:27-33; 14:6-9).
6. ENLIGHTENED EYES HELP US WALK IN PURPOSE AND WISDOM
Spiritual understanding must produce practical action. God does not enlighten our understanding merely so that we can accumulate revelation. He reveals His truth so that we can walk wisely, make godly decisions, fulfil our assignments, and live for His glory.
A believer whose spiritual eyes are enlightened should become increasingly sensitive to God's voice, careful in decisions, fruitful in service, and committed to righteous living.
a) Walk in Wisdom (Ephesians 5:15-17) – We must walk carefully, redeeming the time and understanding what the will of the Lord is.
b) Grow in Knowledge (Colossians 1:9-10) – Spiritual knowledge should produce a life that is fruitful and pleasing to God.
c) Discern God's Will (Romans 12:2) – Transformation through the renewing of the mind enables us to prove what is good, acceptable, and perfect in God's will.
d) Fulfil Your Assignment (Acts 20:24) – Paul considered his life valuable when it was spent fulfilling the ministry and testimony entrusted to him.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah understood the condition of Jerusalem and recognised his assignment to rebuild the walls. He did not merely observe the problem; he responded to God's purpose (Nehemiah 2:17-18).
CONCLUSION
The prayer for “the eyes of your understanding” is a prayer every believer should continually make. We need God to open our spiritual eyes so that we may know the hope of His calling, understand the riches of our inheritance, and recognise the exceeding greatness of His power towards us. Without spiritual understanding, we can possess great spiritual privileges and still live beneath them.
Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten your understanding. Let God's Word correct your vision, let His Spirit guide your decisions, and let His revelation strengthen your faith. You will not remain spiritually blind to your calling, inheritance, authority, or divine opportunities. As your understanding becomes enlightened, you will rise into greater faith, greater wisdom, greater effectiveness, and greater fulfilment of God's purpose for your life.
