Description: This message reveals how Christ delivers sinners from spiritual death, the power of sin and Satan into newness of life, grace, fellowship with God, and a new identity in Christ.

INTRODUCTION

Ephesians 2:1-5 presents one of the clearest pictures of the human condition without Christ and the transforming power of God's grace. Paul says that those who were once separated from God were “dead in trespasses and sins.” Spiritual death does not necessarily mean physical death; it means separation from the life of God. A person may be physically alive, active, educated, successful, and respected, yet be spiritually dead because of sin.

Paul then describes the terrible condition of humanity under the influence of the world, the devil, and the desires of the flesh. But the passage does not end with death. The great turning point is found in the words, “But God.” When humanity was helpless in sin, God intervened through His mercy and great love. He did not leave us in our fallen condition. Through Christ, He made us alive, raised us up, and gave us a new position.

The Gospel is therefore a message of transformation, from death to life, from darkness to light, from bondage to freedom, from separation to fellowship, and from condemnation to grace. No matter how far a person has gone into sin, Christ has the power to give new life. The same God who raised Jesus from the dead can revive a spiritually dead heart, restore a broken life, and make a person a new creation.

1. SIN PRODUCES SPIRITUAL DEATH

Paul begins by saying, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” This shows that sin is more serious than merely making mistakes. Sin separates humanity from God and produces spiritual death.

A spiritually dead person cannot restore himself to fellowship with God through human effort. Just as a physically dead person cannot raise himself, the sinner needs divine intervention. Salvation begins when we recognise our true spiritual condition and our need for Christ.

a) Sin Separates Man from God (Isaiah 59:2) – Sin creates a barrier between humanity and God. The greatest tragedy of sin is not merely its earthly consequences but separation from the One who is the source of life.

b) Sin Brings Spiritual Death (Romans 6:23) – Scripture declares that the wages of sin is death. Sin eventually produces spiritual, moral, and eternal consequences.

c) Sin Corrupts the Heart (Jeremiah 17:9) – The human heart, when uncontrolled by God, is capable of deception and wickedness. Humanity needs more than external correction; we need inward transformation.

d) Sin Makes Man Spiritually Helpless (Romans 5:6) – In our sinful condition, we could not save ourselves. Christ came to do what human strength could never accomplish.

Biblical Example: The prodigal son left his father's house and wasted his inheritance in sinful living. His father later described him as being dead and then alive again when he returned (Luke 15:24).

2. THE WORLD AND SATAN SEEK TO CONTROL THE SPIRITUALLY DEAD

Ephesians 2:2 explains that the spiritually dead once walked according to the course of this world and according to the prince of the power of the air. This reveals that spiritual death leaves people vulnerable to ungodly influences.

The enemy works through deception, temptation, worldly values, and disobedience to keep people away from God. But Christ has come to break the authority of darkness and bring us into His kingdom.

a) The World Can Shape Ungodly Values (Romans 12:2) – The world constantly pressures people to conform to its patterns. Believers must resist this pressure through the renewal of their minds.

b) Satan Is the Enemy of the Soul (1 Peter 5:8) – Satan seeks to devour and destroy. He works through deception and temptation to keep people in bondage.

c) Disobedience Strengthens the Grip of Sin (Ephesians 2:2) – Sin becomes destructive when people continually choose to resist God's truth. Obedience to God is essential for spiritual freedom.

d) Christ Has Authority Over Darkness (Colossians 1:13) – God delivers believers from the power of darkness and translates them into the kingdom of His dear Son. Satan does not have the final authority over those who belong to Christ.

Biblical Example: The man possessed by a legion of demons in Mark 5 lived among the tombs, isolated and tormented. When Jesus came, the demons were expelled, and the man was restored to his right mind and became a witness for Christ (Mark 5:1-20).

3. GOD'S MERCY INTERRUPTS THE STORY OF DEATH

After describing humanity's terrible condition, Paul introduces two powerful words: “But God.” These words mark the greatest turning point in the passage. When we were dead, God acted. When we were helpless, God showed mercy. When we were separated, God provided a way back.

Our salvation is therefore not a testimony of human achievement but of divine mercy. God saw our condition and chose to intervene through His Son.

a) God Is Rich in Mercy (Ephesians 2:4) – God's mercy means that He does not give us the judgement we deserve. His compassion reaches people even in their fallen condition.

b) God's Love Is Great (Ephesians 2:4) – God's intervention is motivated by great love. The cross demonstrates the depth of God's love for humanity.

c) Grace Saves the Undeserving (Ephesians 2:5) – Paul emphasises, “by grace ye are saved.” Salvation is God's gracious gift, not something earned by human merit.

d) God Can Change Any Story (Joel 2:25) – God has the power to restore what has been lost and bring beauty out of situations that appear hopeless.

Biblical Example: Saul of Tarsus was a violent persecutor of Christians, but God's mercy interrupted his journey on the road to Damascus. He encountered Christ and became the apostle Paul (Acts 9:1-22).

4. CHRIST MAKES THE DEAD ALIVE

The greatest miracle in Ephesians 2:1–5 is that God makes spiritually dead people alive in Christ. This is not mere moral improvement. It is spiritual regeneration—a new life produced by the power of God.

The Gospel does not simply tell people to try harder; it offers them a new nature and a new relationship with God through Jesus Christ. What human effort cannot accomplish, divine grace can accomplish.

a) Christ Gives Spiritual Life (John 5:24) – Jesus said that whoever hears His word and believes has everlasting life and has passed from death unto life.

b) Christ Is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25) – Jesus does not merely give life; He is life. Whoever believes in Him receives eternal life.

c) Christ Gives Newness of Life (Romans 6:4) – Those who are united with Christ in salvation are called to walk in newness of life.

d) Christ Makes Us New Creations (2 Corinthians 5:17) – In Christ, old things pass away and all things become new. Salvation changes our identity, direction, values, and destiny.

Biblical Example: Lazarus had been dead for four days, but Jesus stood before the tomb and commanded, “Lazarus, come forth” (John 11:43). The man who was dead came out alive. This demonstrates Christ's absolute authority over death.

5. NEW LIFE MEANS A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

God does not merely rescue us from something; He brings us into something. We are saved from spiritual death so that we can live in fellowship with God. Salvation restores the relationship that sin destroyed.

The believer is no longer an outsider. Through Christ, we become God's children, receive access to His presence, and are brought into a living relationship with Him.

a) We Have Peace with God (Romans 5:1) – Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through Jesus Christ. The hostility caused by sin is replaced with reconciliation.

b) We Have Access to God (Ephesians 2:18) – Through Christ, we have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Prayer becomes a privilege of relationship.

c) We Become Children of God (John 1:12) – Those who receive Christ and believe in His name are given power to become the sons of God.

d) We Have Eternal Fellowship with God (1 John 1:3) – Salvation brings us into fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus experienced more than a change of behaviour when Jesus entered his house. His encounter with Christ transformed his relationship with God and changed his attitude towards possessions and other people (Luke 19:1-10).

6. THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED LIFE MUST WALK IN THAT NEW LIFE

Being brought from death to life is not the end of the Christian journey; it is the beginning. God gives us new life so that we can live differently. We are called to put away the practices of the old life and walk according to the nature of Christ.

The believer must therefore reject the identity, habits, values, and practices associated with the old life. We have been raised with Christ to live for God's glory.

a) Walk in Newness of Life (Romans 6:4) – New life must produce a new walk. Our daily conduct should demonstrate that Christ has changed us.

b) Put Away the Old Man (Ephesians 4:22-24) – The believer must deliberately reject the corrupt patterns of the former life and put on the new man.

c) Seek the Things Above (Colossians 3:1-2) – Those who have been raised with Christ should set their affection on heavenly things rather than allowing worldly values to dominate their lives.

d) Let Your Life Shine (Matthew 5:16) – A transformed life should become a testimony. People should see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

Biblical Example: After his conversion, Zacchaeus demonstrated the reality of his new life by willingly correcting his former wrongs and making restitution (Luke 19:8-9).

CONCLUSION

Ephesians 2:1-5 takes us from the darkness of spiritual death to the glory of new life in Christ. We were dead in sins, controlled by ungodly influences, and separated from God, but God—rich in mercy and great in love—intervened. Through Christ, He made us alive, rescued us from the dominion of sin, and brought us into a new relationship with Himself. Salvation is therefore not simply turning over a new leaf; it is receiving a new life through Jesus Christ.

If you have received this new life, do not return to the grave from which Christ delivered you. Walk in holiness, obedience, prayer, faith, love, and the power of the Holy Spirit. If you are still spiritually dead, today is the day to come to Christ. The One who raised Christ from the dead can revive your heart, forgive your sins, restore your relationship with God, and give you eternal life. You can move from death to life through Jesus Christ.
